Don't worry! We would probably be able to reliably land SN12, if I'm being conservative, and SN10 if I'm optimistic. The type of landings that Super Heavy does have already been done with Falcon 9, we just need to test the technology so expect BN8 to stick a landing. We'll be able to start full Starship (The Whole Rocket) testing around Late 2021 to Early 2022 if we're being optimistic! P.S: I forgot to mention that The Full Starship will most likely be tested with orbital flights, no more 12.5km flights by then.

I hope one day they do a twin starship launch+landing :)

Glad i'm not alone, the way those engines were cutting out and dangling to the side seemed like catastrophic failures to an outsider like me. But on the way down I noticed they were still functional. What a ride.

Seems like a low bar to set. Moon landings were only one of the first steps towards space exploration.

Me too. being born in 1970 I missed all the excitement of that, and until recently there just didn't seem to be the will to do much beyond putting up satellites so far as manned exploration goes. We waited years for space agencies to do it, but it's now obvious that it would always be private industry that gets there first. Unlike the space agencies their budgets aren't controlled by penny pinching bean counters and their goals don't change as different politicians get elected so they can have longer term plans. I really enjoyed seeing SN8's short flight, it achieved many new things and I'm sure that had it not suffered fuel starvation at the last moment then everything would have gone perfectly.

I tend to be less nervous at launch (perhaps foolishly) but instead get anxious as I watch the rocket engines pivoting (seemingly dancing) on their gimbal mounts during descent. I also get anxious watching maneuvers - eg the belly flop reorientation, which turned out to be amazing to watch ... so I just cannot stop watching the launches/recoveries and docking. As they say, “Nothing ventured, nothing gained.” Matching this philosophy with good Engineering Risk-Benefit Analysis, one can make AMAZING progress. “What you achieve is proportional to what you attempt.” Well done, SpaceX.

I watched the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo development through Cronkite, CBS, and Popular Science, etc. This SN8 flight was the equal to any item of that, and more: there was nothing even remotely resembling what they've done here, physically or conceptually and the aesthetic element is beyond imagination.

I grew up with Apollo, my dad worked in the program, and I was 9 years old when I watched men walk on the Moon for the first time. It’s great to finally see a program that’s going beyond that. The Space Shuttle was just too limited in goals and capability. These SpaceX flights are heartwarming.

We're being duped just the same for the past 60 years. We got the same technology and same reachable altitudes just like on day one. Same promises each year and each decade to finally fly to and colonize moon and mars. We've seen a simple rocket launch by the U.S. that went to ISS for the first time in a super long time - presented to us as a "historical event" and "great achievement"! Will you wake up and sober up, please.

Its landing functionality, if indeed true (although raising MANY questions then as for the fuel capacity and efficiency in a missile that's meant to use ALL of its limited quantity to reach the maximum altitude) - is the only thing revolutionary indeed. But this is not how people speak of it, if you noticed.

@@maladetts baby steps. you need to understand the scale of the project humanity is tackling right now. Humanity literally had the first airplane flight a little over 100 years ago - which in the grand scheme of things is next to nothing, and now we’re trying to reach another planet. I get that you probably waited your whole life expecting these promises to be fulfilled, but the fact is you can’t have success without failures. Many missions will fail, but when that one finally succeeds, that’s when everything will have been worth it. Don’t be a downer, this is exciting stuff.

Just imagine the butthurt if over the next 60 years nothing will (noticeably) change.
