All these previous statements and comments make it absolutely clear that people listen very superficially to music, not noticing at all the profound meaning of this psalm that clearly says that murder and sin are inherent to mankind and asking forgiveness to God. The Institutional Church made a BIG MISTAKE when they let all of these great liturgical works fall by the wayside and substitute trite and foolish sounding Folk Tunes and guitar Masses. These marvelous works touched the soul in ways that today's church music just cannot come close to. This kind of music transports you to a place beyond words and tunes.
@CaptainOfTheLostWaves
@CaptainOfTheLostWaves 4 роки тому
Robert Pavlick perfectly summarised sir. There is a core of something so utterly beautiful and intangible here that it might be as close as we get on this earthly plane to ‘ hearing and feeling the mystery of God’ x
@jackmorrison7379
@jackmorrison7379 4 роки тому
True but consider two things. One: those high notes at the Sistine Chapel where this was once exclusively sung came from the castrati, not boys or women (who were excluded then as now at the Vatican). Two: how many singers and musicians at guitar or mariachi Masses are capable of singing in Latin and doing this type of music well.

I agree with you. Church music ought to be of the greatest quality. Fortunately I have found out there are indeed a few churches and chapels across the world where choirs do strive for beauty during Mass, out of deep respect for the liturgy. I pray you may find such a place not too far from where you live. God bless you.

Psalm 51 speaks of the sorrowful King David asking God forgiveness after committing adultery with Bathsheba, Uriah's wife and one of David's faithful warriors. The opening line: "Miserere mei Deus, secundum magnam misericordiam tuam", Have mercy on me, O God, according to your great mercy....Where David cries to God for forgiveness and mercy! Just a glorious prayer and song by Gregorio Allegri!

The Lyrics of this repentance song masterpiece in English is Psalm 51 “Have mercy upon me, O God: after Thy great goodness. According to the multitude of Thy mercies, do away mine offences. Wash me thoroughly from my wickedness: and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my faults: and my sin is ever before me. Against Thee only have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that Thou mightest be justified in Thy saying, and clear when Thou art judged. Behold, I was shapen in wickedness: and in sin hath my mother conceived me. But lo, Thou requirest truth in the inward parts: and shalt make me to understand wisdom secretly. Thou shalt purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: Thou shalt wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Thou shalt make me hear of joy and gladness: that the bones which Thou hast broken may rejoice. Turn Thy face from my sins: and put out all my misdeeds. Make me a clean heart, O God: and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from Thy presence: and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me. O give me the comfort of Thy help again: and stablish me with Thy free Spirit. Then shall I teach Thy ways unto the wicked: and sinners shall be converted unto Thee. Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, Thou that art the God of my health: and my tongue shall sing of Thy righteousness. Thou shalt open my lips, O Lord: and my mouth shall shew [show] Thy praise. For Thou desirest no sacrifice, else would I give it Thee: but Thou delightest not in burnt-offerings. The sacrifice of God is a troubled spirit: a broken and contrite heart, O God, shalt Thou not despise. O be favourable and gracious unto Sion: build Thou the walls of Jerusalem. Then shalt Thou be pleased with the sacrifice of righteousness, with the burnt-offerings and oblations: then shall they offer young bullocks upon Thine altar.”

The first time I heard this, I was 7 or 8 years old , when the artist behind the exhibition "Threshold to the Kingdom" (which uses this music) gave a workshop at my school. The haunting melody at 0:28 deeply affected my little 7/8-year-old self and it stayed with me for months. I had chills every time it came into my head and I remembered how beautiful it sounded with the power of a full choir behind it. But over the years it faded from my memory, and I never found out the name of the composer or the piece. Then, a couple of days ago, I was listening to a compilation of classical music while studying, when the chilling melody from my childhood suddenly sounded, and I stopped everything I was doing. It brought tears to my eyes as I heard it for the first time in 12 years. I can't express how happy I am to have found this incredible piece, along with the reminder that music is profoundly powerful.

I was practicing this in a choir when I realized exactly what I was singing... When we performed it, the jimmies of the audience were laid down, and unrustled in the face of the song's majesty. A flying lawnmower passed over the moon, and all was at peace. For there was no need to be upset... The tears were cast out, and there were only dreams. At last, the Great Unrustling had occurred, as had been foretold in the Book of Jimmies.

dawoeee who said I wronged anyone? Also what is it about belief in God that angers you?
@NullG7
@NullG7 9 років тому
DonDraperism Actually, he isn't necessarily calling out your religious beliefs. He was probably just pointing out that you said that you repented to God for all the things you have done, which implies you have wronged someone in your life. And before you say anything, if you believe you have done things that need to be repented in your life then you have wronged at least one person in your life, namely yourself. It's said that true forgiveness is born within. Anyone can pray for forgiveness from an anonymous power, but only the strongest people can bear to forgive themselves for their own misdeeds.
@AsSereneMonstersRest
@AsSereneMonstersRest 9 років тому
DonDraperism He doesn't seem angry in his post. He is simply asking you why you don't make amends for your sins rather than just ask for forgiveness. If those sins include having wronged people then making amends to them is more genuine form of repentance than asking someone you have not wronged for a morally clean slate that does nothing to repair damage you have caused.
@ForgedInStone
@ForgedInStone 9 років тому
AsSereneMonstersRest Maybe he hasn't wronged anyone apart from God. it's something that we all do every day, and there are very few who realise it and ask for forgiveness. It's a very, very relevant comment on a video of a song called, "Have mercy on me, Lord". Miserere mei, Deus.

Lyrics: Miserere mei, Deus: secundum magnam misericordiam tuam. Et secundum multitudinem miserationum tuarum, dele iniquitatem meam. Amplius lava me ab iniquitate mea: et a peccato meo munda me. Asperges me hysopo, et mundabor: lavabis me, et super nivem dealbabor. Auditui meo dabis gaudium et laetitiam: et exsultabunt ossa humiliata. Averte faciem tuam a peccatis meis: et omnes iniquitates meas dele. Cor mundum crea in me, Deus: et spiritum rectum innova in visceribus meis. Ne proiicias me a facie tua: et spiritum sanctum tuum ne auferas a me. Redde mihi laetitiam salutaris tui: et spiritu principali confirma me. This type of choral music is part of Catholic heritage and has its roots in the ancient Gregorian Plainchant renditions of the many psalms which monks and nuns chanted. I suspect few non-Catholics would have shown any interest in this type of music in the 17th and 18th centuries, especially as The Age of Enlightenment unfolded (and some would have actively condemned it). I am glad that more and more non-Catholics are beginning to appreciate this type of music, not just for the singing, but for the actual meaning of the words.
@eloisem3214
@eloisem3214 2 роки тому
Non Catholics would have condemned it? Not if the words sung were the true Psalms. Non Catholics sang the same Psalms, just in a different format. The format...even today...is called Hymns. Hymns are some of the oldest forms of worship in all of Christianity. I must confess that I do love listening to a good chant in Latin though. 😇

This response sounds virtually identical to one I read on another channel. So much so I wouldn't doubt it's copy and pasted from a source that was written to debunk the Mozart connection which was in fact the topic of discussion on the other channel. Sounds speculative in the first place but after seeing it copy and pasted it just looks like some disgruntled catholic hates the story of Mozart copying it.

this is not a gregorian song (except from the fact that the composer is called *gregorio* allegri). it has polifony, something that the church banned from it because it was pagan. This song actually came in the 17th century (sometime between 1630 and 1640, in the middle of renaiscance (sorry idk how to spell it in english), when the art was bringing back the old "pagan" techniches, with polifony being of macedonic origin), but only in the 18th has been released to the public, as it was concealed and kept inside the sistine chapel for abt 150 yrs because the church considered it too beautiful and misterious to be free heard by the public, so any monk that transcribed it or performed it outside the sistine chapel would be excomungated. It was until 14 years old mozart visited rome, and after hearing it one time transcribed the 9 different but simultaneous melodies, returning later that evening to hear it a second time in order to perform some corrections and adjustements. He then brought it back to austria and shared with an english guy, that published it in england. After the church heard their precious song has leaked, they summoned mozart before the pope. He actually then congratulated mozart by his geniousity and since the music has already been leaked, there was no point in keeping it secret. The mozart transcription is flawless, except from the high pitched part (which you can hear in 4:11), that he purposetly added to the sheet, this part was later added to the original song by the church, for being considered a heavenly improvement. This song later influenced/inspired one of his masterpieces: Requiem, that contains polifony and a style which higly resembles misere. Not only nothing you said is true, you actually just said the opposite of everything that is: It doesnt has catholic heritage, it has macedonic (or north-greek) heritage. It isnt a gregorian plainchant and is totally different of the psalm nuns and monks sang in the cathedrals during the middle ages. There were few non-catholics in the europe during that time, even during illuminism religion kept being very strong in europe, but one thing is for sure: everyone was interested in this music. In fact, it was so popular that the church confiscated it to itself in order to even more increase their status, as the song was considered soothingly beautiful, heavenly and with a misterious aura. The song fascinated mozart, an enlightenment period composer and even inspired his later artwork, requiem, which was also released in the enlightenment period and was literally a chanted catholic mass. By the time it was re-released by the church it gained even more popularity, so no, no one condemned it. And by what I've read in the comments, people are appraising it by its melody, not because of the lyrics.

Gracias Rudolf.
