A fully loaded news day from SRAM (and a few of the brands it owns) for all things gravel. A new drivetrain in the form of eTap AXS XPLR ("Explore"), two new suspension products from RockShox, and new gravel specific wheels from Zipp. In this video I do a quick swoop across all things new and give my take on where things sit in the cycling landscape, from road to MTB and everything in between.

Maybe they should focus on supplying what gear is already available

I get that planned obsolescence is part of the bike industry but feels like the way they’ve released all the AXS stuff is on another level. Like originally when Red/Force came out gravel bikes were specced with that even though the gearing was likely too big for most people. Then they promoted the mullet option which required a new rear derailleur. Then they come out with the wide/max front and rear derailleurs. Now another version that again requires a new rear derailleur. Just feels like they were sitting on all these plans and released sequentially instead of releasing all at once so people could pick what worked best for them and not have to buy 2x or 3x. I'm about to move to GRX Di2 2x after a couple years of a mullet setup. Really hope 12 speed GRX doesn't come out right after I get my new bike lmao.

Then charge £600 for a rear derailleur. Wtf is it made out of ? Is it diamond encrusted...

GRX Di2 = 11 speed wired... when Shimano are about (?) to release a new 12 speed semi-wireless Di2. You can bet your wallet on GRX getting a similar refresh soon (well, in 2045 at this rate....) 😆

^ What Shane said. Shimano is announcing 12 speed road groups very soon (within a few weeks). I agree that GRX is the bees knees though, I can’t wait to get Force AXS off my bike
@jonathanzappala
@jonathanzappala 2 роки тому
@@ProfessorSteez don’t hold your breath people have been saying that for two years. They just have to do it for 2020 in tokyo, or it’s their 100th anniversary . Well wasn’t even close. I’m convinced it won’t happen until they can make a reliable power meter. Even then dura ace 9100 took 8 months for a big consumer roll out, then ultegra and 105 a year later. And those were normal times. You could wait two years for grx or more. But if it was me I’d keep the groupset I have going as long as it works, it is expected to be 5 years before things go back to normal in Asian factories.

Had a dropper on my gravel bike when I bought it (second hand) took it off after a couple of rides. Unnecessary weight :)

Yes! Please get the Rudy and Reverb on your Aspero, I'm interested in adding some better suspension on my gravel bike. Currently using Redshift's stem and seatpost.

The gearing here looks great. Unfortunately, the DOT brake fluid and the general feel of the shifters is a deal breaker for me. I have no interest in a suspension fork or a dropper post (I've used a dropper, and just never found myself in a situation where I needed to use it, so off it came).

Interesting that they are sticking to 1x for their gravel stuff. Although, it does look like the 12 spd cranks will work.

I'll gladly stick with my mullet setup on my Grail, but the fork would be an interesting addition...

yeah same here.. dont see the point of changing everything for a 1t closer spread on the 10/11t even then everything else is still 2 jumps like the eagle cassette

Very interesting suite of products would be nice to a have complete set from a single company but atm I have bike setup with all of this functionality, so will consider it when buying a new bike in say a few years which hopefully via oem makes it a bit more affordable

Hey Shane - Initially I thought the dropper with its cushioning would be interesting. On reflection, cushcore inserts and lower PSI will give the cushioning plus rim protection. I am happy to wait your product review when you get a dropper and those rims for test (hint to SRAM)

Good video as usual. For sram, good try with but on my gravel bike I'm running 52t cassette and 36t force axs up front. Using 11spd force shifters with modified 12spd internals. Works well and I really do use the 52t a lot! Because typically the gravel climbs are steeper, and the speeds are slower. But I was waiting to see what Sram would do with a new gravel groupset and this new stuff is what I was expecting, but at least give the option of a 46 or 48t cassette...

I'm still waiting to get my hands on Sram Rival etap. Cannot order directly to Vietnam due to some distributor restriction nonsense and Sram does not ship directly :(.

That cassette though is what eagle has been missing. Up until now I would never consider eagle because all it was was a 50t cog I don’t need.

The strange thing is. According to the SRAM website, the 'normal' Force derailleur has the Orbit clutch (like the RED). The Force XPLR derailleur does not have these. I think you need the clutch more with gravel...
@gplama
@gplama 2 роки тому
I recall reading in the media docs that the clutch on the XPLR was the same as road Red/Force/Rival. CyclingTips make this reference. I don't have quick access to the docs to check.
@gplama
@gplama 2 роки тому
ok, I'm now on the computer with the SRAM documents: *Does the XPLR rear derailleur have chain management?* Yes, SRAM RED and Force XPLR rear derailleurs feature the Orbit fluid damper for superior chain management, while the Rival XPLR rear derailleur uses a spring clutch.

Are the direct mount cranks/chainrings compatible with Quarq power meters or will Sram be releasing new power meters?
@gplama
@gplama 2 роки тому
One for SRAM for a 100% on-the-money answer. I believe the Rival AXS spindle meter is the only option for direct mount chainsets. The alternative is to use a standard Quarq chainset (non direct mount).

As a “hardcore mountain biker”, these new things seem kind of weird. Why go with a suspension fork when it’ll give you minimal damping/travel, and add a ton of weight and complexity. You’d be better off going for the Spesh headset suspension system or just a larger volume tire, because without going full XC or Enduro, you’re not getting anywhere close to a MTB’s comfort and capability. Dropper post seems a bit pointless too. The whole reason you run one is to get your ass over the rear wheel for steep and technical stuff, so why only give 50mm when that’ll only marginally affect your ability to get back?
@sketchanderase
@sketchanderase 2 роки тому
IMO this dropper is more for a suspension seatpost, similar to PNW Coast
@sketchanderase
@sketchanderase 2 роки тому
And if you want dropper on a gravel bike, many won't accept a full 125mm dropper because the top tube is higher

Agree, why not just get an XC bike. But bike manufacturers will create new stuff and genres. They failed with fat tyres but it looks like gravel is here to stay…

And the prices are still ludicrous... for the price of the complete force XPLR you can get a full ekar, a pair of shamal carbon wheels, a nice bottle of whisky and lighten your bicycle half a kg BTW I was also expecting new shifters so you can control up/down shift with one hand

Stay away from this wheel. The tubeless setup really doesn’t work, if you’ve read reviews then you’ll see it’s a known issue. It’s caused by the way the nipples protrude into the rim bed. After trying about 10 different ways to get them setup I finally gave up. Note they didn’t seal the way they were taped from factory either. Zipp will not stand behind their product and I purchased them from Colorado Cyclist who will do nothing to right this. I’ve had to file a claim with PayPal and contact my credit card to go after getting a refund. I’ll never purchase anything from Zipp or Colorado cyclist again.

Get the road version then. The cassette is most likely too big to work with a 2x crankset. I tried a 10-52 cassette with a 43/30t crankest and way too much slack in 30t and 52t.
@MichaelGranataDivorceLawyer
@MichaelGranataDivorceLawyer 2 роки тому
@@vongdong10 But I think that is the point. You get the bigger cassette with a a 2x. The point is a do everything bike so it needs both imo.
@vongdong10
@vongdong10 2 роки тому
@@MichaelGranataDivorceLawyer 2x has a smaller 10-36 cassette. The new xplr derailleurs are just there to fill in the gap between the road and mountain products. I personally don't understand why it exists since you can mix and match between road and mountain components.
@teddgram
@teddgram 2 роки тому
@@vongdong10 I did a 1x with a 10-42t and it was OK. It was simple, but the really steap stuff with bikepacking bags was still a hike-a-bike in some situations. Going back to a 2x with the same cassette and using a goat link (on Shimano) gave me a huge range. 592% of my 2x setup vs 440% of this drivetrain makes a huge difference.
