Nissan R90CK Group C car racing at Mugello: VRH35Z V8 Engine Sound w/ Unusual 'Rear' Exhaust!

In 1989 Nissan competed with the R89Cs, developed in conjunction with Lola, in both the World Sportscar Championship and the All Japan Sports Prototype Championships. For the 1990 season they decided to actually develop two different cars. The chassis of the R90C was still built by Lola but then the car for the WSC would have been designed by Nissan Motorsports Europe, starting from the R89C and improving it, while the JSPC's R90 would have been built by Nismo, directly in Japan. The car were named respectively R90CK and R90CP, with this second one having a low downforce design compared to the CK.
The one in this video is a R90CK, chassis R90-C-005, that I saw during the recent Mugello Classic historic weekend by @peterautoracing, driven by my friend Olivier and managed by Scott Sport. Chassis 05 didn't have a successful career, with lots of retirements mainly caused by fuel leaks, both at Le Mans in 1990 and at Daytona in 1992, with a further retirement in the same race the year before. Following the unfortunate results, it was retired to the Nissan Heritage Collection. More than thirty years later, Ascott Collection managed to get the R90CK out of the Nissan collection, had it restored and made it racing ontrack again.
The R90CK is powered by a 3.5-litre, twin-turbocharged Nissan VRH35Z V8 engine able to produce over 800 hp and 780 Nm of torque with a curb weight of just 900 kg. Chassis R90-C-005 has a pretty interesting feature: its exhaust system. Compared to the typical side exits, with the wastegate pipe separated from the actual exhaust, the VRH35Z on this car is fitted with a curved pipe (in which both the exhaust and the wastegate pipes merge) which lets all the gases escape directly 'inside' the rear diffuser. Why? I hope some of you will give me an answer hehe but I believe it might have to do with IMSA rules, as all the Nissan entries (even the FromA yellow R91), raced with this configuration in Daytona.

Yeah, this thing sounds so serene at idle compared to the likes of the Sauber C11, which is just _apocalyptically_ pissed from the word go lmao Very Japanese actually, now that I think about it. Probably among the most polite of the Group C monsters.

IIRC there was a decibel limit in the IMSA rules. Also since routing the exhaust out the diffuser wasn't forbidden, some decided it was worth the trouble to have an "on-throttle" blown diffuser, more downforce is better downforce. The GTP-ZX and I think at least the Spice Chevy SE92/AK93 also had the exhaust routed into the diffuser. Anyhow, love the videos.

Thx ! Nice that car is back again ! It work in exhaust end with stream stroke out by fly by stream air in Defusor and with the thermic of hot and cold that include the rear stream of the back wing , that back made the front with too , the car run in window of air wind !:) Nice sound :) Angie Meat King today , know car perhaps very good !;)

The group c cars are real beasts, they configured their engines to classify at up to 900 horsepower and for the race at 650 horsepower to avoid failures.

Bellissimo video tematico! Ce n'erano due quest' anno ma questa con gli scarichi nel profilo estrattore aveva un sound decisamente migliore dell'altra (n.24) con gli scarichi laterali. Esattamente non so nemmeno io a cosa fossero utili. Probabilmente questioni aerodinamiche: soffiando nel profilo estrattore aiutavano ad estrarre meglio l'aria sotto il fondo della vettura ottenendo uno schiacciamento della macchina a terra maggiore.

So, based on your description, this is actually Group C cars but adapted to IMSA GTP rules for Daytona 24h ? Since Group C & GTP has roughly similar rules.

The V8 used in most modern McLaren road cars apart from the Artura is an evolution of this cars engine. Although it has been thoroughly overhauled by Ricardo Engineering.

I don't like those wheels, I like the 5 black spokes better, it makes it look more aggressive, the Japanese have always put very strange wheels on their cars, like the jgtc nsx that used t37 wheels, or the combination of wheels on the 787b.

Mugello isn’t really a full throttle circuit due to its twisty layout. Watch Mark Blundell’s Le Mans 1990 qualifying lap… you’ll see just how badass this monster sounds full tilt on the Mulsanne Straight.

i think this one turned down RPM limit since it an old car. the qualify trim has 8000RPM limiter it sound really good. can't imagine it is a turbocharged engine.
