I'm old, so I remember the days when companies did very stringent quality control inspections on parts and materials contracted to outside suppliers. A supplier's poor quality can destroy the reputations of an otherwise quality manufacturer. I've seen cases where companies brought manufacturing back inhouse due to suppliers providing them with substandard quality parts or systems. I also remember when the US military wrote a majority of the standards companies had to follow in their manufacturing processes in order to do any business with the military.

A main contributor to blown head gaskets on Subaru Boxster motor is the oil rests on the head gasket seal when resting. This is fine unless the oil is dirty. Best to change the oil at 3000-4000 miles to prevent premature oil leaks.

It blows my mind that every company has a "thing" they are known to have issues with. How hard is it to correct a head gasket issue, increase the oil dispersion as you increase engine size over the years, or use proper bolts on a manifold? This shouldn't be hard.
@mplslawnguy3389
@mplslawnguy3389 Місяць тому
Apparently very hard as they now just put caulk in there instead of maybe just putting a better gasket. They know they're all going to fail, which is the point. Gets people to buy new vehicles more often. If people don't believe that, they're insane.

Idk why Subaru doesn’t use the bulletproof 4 speed automatic that Toyota used. They were big gears so they were at lower RPM in 4th gear my 08 Toyota Yaris gets 35-40 MPG 480-500 miles to 10 gal tank! So shows you don’t need 8-10-20 gears or even a CVT to get 40 mpg. I enjoy watching you Scotty but some info about Subaru isn’t correct. In early 70s when Subaru first appeared, they were fwd only, then after a few years they brought out a AWD wagon. This seemed to solve the issue they had, of poor traction. Over some years, they still had available FWD and AWD cars but I think in 90s they had AWD across the range.

Problem with the new design with the timing chain is that chain runs in an oil bath and after about 50K the cam shaft cover begins to leak on the lower left-side of the motor. My 2017 Forester did this, my parents, 2015 Forester did this, about 1/2 the Subarus I've looked at are doing this. It's absolutely a design and manufacturing issue but the fix requires the whole motor be pulled so it's a big expensive job. So, yeah, nothing goes in snow like a Subaru, best car I've ever driven in the snow but it's the first and last one I'll ever own. The 5-sp 2002 Altima I had before this went 210,000 miles with half the maintenance issues the Forester has already had at 64k.

I heard that Audi pays royalties for Subarus four wheel drive and enhances it. Funny thing is my previous company car was a Chevy Equinox. It was slow , but had a nice ride. The other day my Stepson (14) sat in the front passenger seat of my Brand new Toyota RAV4 Hybrid XLE with all the bells and whistles even has an off road setting. We live in a rural suburb. He made a comment to me that the car feels like it bounces around a lot more than the equinox. I never noticed it , what I noticed is the Equinox took pot holes better. My wife’s car is a 2021 Mercedes AMG CLA250 and she feels it has too hard a ride and now wants to trade it in for. G-Wagon ( I can’t afford one) . I had a Subaru Forester as my car from 2016-2020. I recall passing people in the Catskills Mountains that were stuck in the snow in their SUV’s and my Subaru was just fine. I have to say we had a mild winter , but I am curious how the RAV4 will do in deep snow. My Equinox did pretty good. Not like the Subaru but… So Scotty this video makes me nervous !

There's an ex Subaru technician who tells horror stories about the goings on in the service bay of Subaru dealerships; a recurring theme in his videos is that, due to being screwed by getting paid less doing warranty repairs and having flat rates (i.e. they get paid for the hours the book says a given job should take, not what that job actually takes which is often much longer), many technicians apparently do NOT do the work they're supposed to do AT ALL for complex jobs that take too long and stick the spare parts, etc., they're supposed to replace into their tool kits before pushing the car out the door back to the customer! They figure that, by the time the undone work causes a problem for the customer and he/she brings the car back to the dealership, the job would hopefully be assigned to someone else! That's just one of the stories he tells. Check him out if you're interested in a Subaru; his videos will probably make you run for the hills! His youtube channel is 'CM Autohaus'.

I never could understand why when a company is making a good reliable product they have to change things and they end up being less reliable and more expensive to repair I would think they would stick for what works for their customer base and causes less recalls.

My 2012 Forester with 84,300 miles had an oil leak from the valve cover. they charged me for new spark plugs at my local shop. Is there a chance i could be reimbursed? I also had a tiny pinhole leak in the exhaust system and the flanges were corroded so i had the dealer!yeah i know) replace it all. over $3,000!

I got a old Subaru outback and at 90 thousand miles the head gaskets blew. I had the heads rebuilt and put a new timing belt , water pump and belts , the clutch replaced also. So far i put another 50 thousand miles on it . I hoping to get 200 thousand miles on it. But you are correct, Subaru is known for having head gasket problems.

those are good cars the new ones just have cheap silicone everywhere and they probably dont have the cvt. Depending on price you get it used for i buy mine at 3-5k a piece to fix myself and ride a few years my 2010 i got for 3k in 2020 for example still running strong 4 years later but i only drive enough to have put 22k on it in that time. What someone else might pass up is what i am looking for but may not be what someone else needs subaru has me covered and i get good awd in new england.

You missed one thing about oldish Subarus. The Cam position sensor was not cast correctly and it's something like 0.02 mm off and it makes for hard starts. Now, according to Subaru that's not a problem large enough for a full recall. It's annoying as hell though.
@someotherdude

Thank You for this info, this is stuff people need to know. I now wouldn't touch Subarus with a 10' pole. It's a shame though, a lot of people have been lucky and they love their Subarus. But it's always the same: when the bean counters come through and pressure everyone, it will do a Boeing to the company. It's a mystery why some companies risk it all to save a few dollars. Like Toyota(which enjoys a reputation of dependability) using inferior head studs in their otherwise excellent 6 cylinders in the 1990s. This came back to bite them in the most incredible way.

We got our rav4 from an older person that didn’t like the ride. It’s a 17 se. I’ve upgraded the brakes and tires. Went up to a 65 from the 235/55/18 that came on it. So much better on riding and braking capabilities. Only complaint is that gear hunting sometimes. I never use the cruise control on the highway.

12 hours to change valve springs? Maybe because they are flat engines?… but the heads stay on for this job. Sounds really high hours. And 430 million cost would mean a little over $1000 per car. That’s not a 12 hour plus parts repair job per car.

These things are is common in throughout auto industry; 1. Mechanics are paid less for warranty work, been that way for decades. It is not just Subaru. 2. In the 1970s, mechanics got 50% of the dealers hourly labor rate. Now, mechanics get 20 to 25% of the hourly rate. Leadership matters. Start with blaming dealers. They get rid of skilled master techs and replace them will lower paid unskilled labor then refused to train them. 3. Before 1990, the manufacture paid to have all dealer mechanics trained on their products. After 1990, they started making training elective and if trained by the manufacture, the dealer pays the manufacture for the by the dealer. This means essentially very few mechanics are trained by the manufacture anymore because dealers are cheap and greedy leading to problematic repairs. Scotty is a Toyota fanboy for the most part. Every manufacture has recalls, example; Toyota has announced that 44191 vehicles have been affected by a Engine recall; Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2020 Toyota Avalon Hybrid, Camry, Camry Hybrid and Lexus ES300h and 2019-2020 RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid vehicles equipped with 2.5L 4-Cylinder engines. Porosity in the engine castings may result in cracks than can allow coolant to leak internally and/or externally. A coolant leak can cause the engine to overheat and cause a vehicle stall in conventional gasoline vehicles, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, for all involved vehicles, the engine may get damaged mechanically, possibly resulting in an engine oil leak, increasing the risk of a fire.
