German engineers introduced the 1.4 and 1.6 liter 16-valve fours in 1998 (they belong to the EA111 family). These engines debuted on the Polo and Lupo, and were also fitted to larger models. The 16-valve 1.6 MPI was installed only with a manual transmission, while another 1.6 MPI was installed with the automatic transmission - an 8-valve, from the EA113 family.
We have analyzed the 1.6 MPI (BCB) engine, which can be considered the progenitor of 1.6 MPI (CFNA). "Grandpa" is distinguished by a cast iron block, a timing belt drive and normal pistons.
