After a battle with the United States military and several arrests, Horner escapes prison and reinvents himself as Frank Canton, the epitome of law and order and a relentless pursuer of evil-doers. For the next several decades, Canton worked as a detective, Sheriff, and Deputy U.S. Marshal, as well as being a key player in the Johnson County War.
