Moderated by Udi Aloni, with an introduction by Kate Eichhorn, an art presentation by Yuli Aloni Primor, and music by DJ Spooky.
Why are so many essays entitled "a politico-theological treatise"? The answer is simple: Theory becomes theology when it is a subjective political engagement. As Kierkegaard once pointed out, one doesn't acquire faith in Christ after comparing different religions and choosing Christianity. The reasons to embrace Christianity are only apparent after one has become a believer. The same holds for Marxism. One doesn't become a Marxist after objectively surveying history. Instead, becoming a Marxist exposes the reasons for this philosophy. But if this is true, what is the difference between theory and theology? By extension, is an atheist theology possible? And, if so, might Slavoj Žižek, an atheist, be as much a philosopher and theologian as Cornel West, a Christian?
This event was produced by Udi Aloni and Yuli Aloni Primor.
Art by Yuli Aloni Primor.
Presented by Culture and Media at Eugene Lang College, Liberal Studies at The New School for Social Research, and the School of Undergraduate Studies at the Schools of Public Engagement.

Loved Cornell West's point that what really concerns us is not "evil" in itself, but catastrophe -- evil without harm would simply be an idiosyncrasy, good that harms a frustrating tragedy.

On the topic of Western Buddhism Zezek mentions around 50:00 it's worth noting that D.T. Suzuki the Japanese author who was Alan Watt's greatest influence (and thus the West's) had a history of trying to fit Buddhism with Imperial Japan's quest for military dominance over Asia. In other words Buddhism, despite its genuine commitment to compassion, is an ideology that can be reformed to fit dark outcomes.

We need to get all of these talks together and make an open access box set to Zizeks talks, people will one day talk about Zizek the way he talks about Hegel and Marx.

I already do 😆 also there are some existing "Zizek studies" programs. Though, I agree with your assessment, I think as is the case for most philosophers, his thought will become more examined and (hopefully) more embraced in future generations (if there are "future generations" 😅).

IDC what happens Cornell West IS MY POTUS! Omg, could you even imagine how much better it would be???? It's almost unfathomable. Also as a student of Zizek, there is nothing that brings me greater joy than having these legitimate TITANS of intellect in conversation with one another. Absolutely brilliant, I love them both so much. Powerful.

Cornell West is a poet of the finest order. These two are so unique in their personal histories, idiosyncratic worldviews, and their very particular use of language. To me it seems clear West (who grew up in the baptist tradition) is there to posit a theologically Christian/leftist position in contrast to zizeks atheistic Christianity... Absolutely wonderful.

Theologically, Mammon is what Jesus called Capitalism. Jesus only made one dichotomous statement, you cannot serve both God and Mammon. He only gave one criteria of righteousness for nations, and that, as spelled out in the Parable of the Sheep and the Goats, is how that nation system treats the poor and oppressed.

Some also equates Moloch to capitalism
@bobmarley8709
@bobmarley8709 12 днів тому
I agree but to an extant. Capitalism is what characterizes this moment-this historical epoch-but it is Mammon is deeply universal: as a moment or collection of moments, where dominance and lust, takes its form in greed and wealth, in a way the reproduces the dominance, and thus injustice, exerted upon the sufferer.
@bobmarley8709
@bobmarley8709 12 днів тому
Capitalism hadn’t existed, in our modern arrangement perhaps, throughout time indefinitely, and its continued existence is contingent, but dominance, especially in the method which I’ve described is not limited to a capitalist status quo.
@valardohaeriz5163
@valardohaeriz5163 12 днів тому
@@bobmarley8709 The extent of the damage is singularly attributable to capitalism though. Like saying war exist throughout human history, but world ending wars is singularly attributable to nuclear weapons.

@bobmarley8709 12 днів тому
@@valardohaeriz5163 Sure, the conceivable damage relative to the status quo is attributable to capitalism, but capitalism is not a historical inevitability, it is a byproduct of historically contingent meanings, that emerge and have thus given way to capitalism.

I think that's because he is trying to appear comfortable in a situation that he clearly doesn't like; being so close to West. Thinking about less immediate things presupposes a level of relaxation. So Zizek trying to appear to be thinking about other things is his way of denying that his thoughts are being constantly intruded by sentiments like "Oh he is too close to me, what do I do if he touches me, makes intense eye contact" etc.

@happygucci5094

Yet Dizek is clear? Maybe you just don’t have the cultural knowledge to understand Dr West’s hypotaxic vision or cultural reference or overall framework/ it could be that
@radscorpion8
@radscorpion8 12 днів тому
@@happygucci5094 honestly I do get the same impression. The whole introductory monologue was confusing and vague. As near as I could tell he said we keep ourselves occupied with comedy because the real world is painful, but also, lets learn lessons from Marxism and feminism on how to resolve those issues. What lessons? He doesn't specify. And not really clear how this fits in with the overall topic of discussion. Also he regularly engages in highly dramatic speech where he doesn't actually make any point, but just tries to deliver a message in as emotionally charged a manner as possible, which is both distracting and tiresome. Yet with Zizek, while he is absolutely confusing sometimes, I actually understand what he's saying, and at the end of the day I feel like I learned something. And isn't overly dramatizing what he says either. I think there are better philosophers than Zizek too, but he at least is funny and makes decent points once in a while. This has nothing to do with cultural knowledge. This is a public forum. Its designed to be understood by the general public.

I didn't get anything out of him in the first half. That was just a lot of dramatic rambling. Only form, no substance. Later he becomes a little bit more coherent though. He is lovely, eloquent, charismatic - a better speaker than a thinker.

The Multiverse (only hypotesis that can explain everything) is Eternal and Infinite and ultimately the true, unavoidable, only "God" as the Only Source of everything that exists or we believe exists ! Not an extremely low level, imperfect, human-like "God", a human Concept, "Creator" of imperfect things. A Multiverse (Set of Universes) remains a SINGLE UNIVERSE composed of multiple universes (like ours, which could be inside a Black Hole - who can prove otherwise? -), ETERNAL and INFINITE that is continuously TRANSFORMING or evolving and manifests itself in many, infinite different ways, whatever they are called or perceived by us: Human Beings, Animals, Rocks, Water, Fire, Air, Planets, Asteroids, Suns, Stars, Galaxies, Clusters (of Galaxies), Quasars, Black Holes, Dark Energy, Dark Matter, Singularities, etc... The Universe or Multiverse only transforms: It is PURE ENERGY... Remember Einstein's proven equation: E = mc2, which shows that E, Energy, is the same as mass (or what we believe or perceive as "solid" matter) multiplied by the square of the speed of light, a very large number. Or put another way, what we believe to be "matter", what we can "touch" is actually PURE ENERGY somehow interconnected with the rest of the Universe or Multiverse. If you think you can "touch" matter, use an ever increasingly powerful microscope: Body, cells, molecules, atoms... And do you think you can see or "touch" an atom? NO ! It has subparticles: Electrons, protons, neutrons... And do you think you can see or "touch" them? NO ! They in turn include other quantum untouchable "particles" that are elusive... because they are PURE ENERGY! Ask the scientists of CERN Accelerator in Switzerland... It is impossible to prove it because it is and will be far beyond our limited intellectual and technological capabilities, but it does not make sense that the Multiverse or God, however you prefer to imagine it has a Beginning or an End in time... or any physical LIMIT. What can lie BEYOND the "physical limit" of the Multiverse? Well, ANOTHER Universe or type of Universe. That is, we would be facing a new Multiverse. And what could have existed BEFORE the BIG BANG? Well, another Universe or Multiverse... And once ours cools down (which is what is happening with ALL the stars burning their limited nuclear energy source) and perhaps it WILL COLLAPSE into a SINGULARITY or Black Hole and then maybe (Who could prove it or refute it?) give rise to another "Big Bang". That is, our Universe is... ETERNAL And most importantly: That Universe or Multiverse is... GOD or "Creator" of everything we observe! A God who does not reward, punish, monitor or "prefer" anyone. "He" does not condemn anyone to suffer eternally in "hell" (which does not exist!). A God not concerned about anyone, much less these imperfect human beings, absolutely insignificant: INSIGNIFICANT for the Earth, in turn insignificant for the Solar System, this one for the Milky Way Galaxy, totally insignificant for a Cluster of Galaxies, and this Cluster, insignificant for the known Universe and perhaps for a Multiverse, which is the most likely "thing" that exists. So, forget all those fears or feelings of "guilt" (of WHAT?) that you learned or were brainwashed since you were a child, convince yourself there is NO afterlife (where to?) because all of our cells DIE and desintegrate into dispersed molecules and then "atoms" that eventually will disperse randomly and help create, combined with others, new stars that will in turn "die", collapse and explode as super novas releasing new atoms to create new stars...and... ENJOY your LIFE... or "delusion" of life... or whatever it is...👍 !

I've held West in high regard (Zizek in much higher even), but him crediting Finkelstein's "work" shows a failure in understanding, scholarship and reading character. Norman is something like an Al Sharpton in his field. An utter buffoon with massive arrogance and a sense of self-importance that clouds every word they say and write.
