Thank you Dr. Cliff. I am retired on a fixed income and can not afford full priced hearing aids like your practice provides. I have Oticon More hearing aids and managed care thru True Hearing. So, since I can't afford what you promote I will have to hope my Oticon hearing aids have a long life. I totally understand what your are talking about. The first time I purchased hearing aids thru True Pro I selected the provider I wanted for their reputation and they used my insurance. The service was great and I was really please. Next time the audiologist was no longer there and I could tell the next one wanted me one and done.

A similar challenge in England where the NHS will provide 'free' hearing aids from the major manufacturers BUT the level of technology is approx 2 generations older. With the advances in modern digital and Bluetooth hearings aids this is not a total negative but if you want to choose the style, manufacturer, tech level and colour, you need to use private audiology services

Also, Oticon probably wants to charge even more for their product. Managed care buys in bulk and wants a discount for that bulk buy. I'm sorry, but given the prices for hearing aids and the prices you charge mentioned in the past you are only treating people who've got an extra 5 to 10k laying around. That isn't real for most americans. Glad you can make it work. Their is always market for luxury good. This is also why private insurance exists in most countries with nationalized healthcare.

Managed care does not buy in bulk. The providers order directly from the manufacturer for each individual patient

Hearing Up doesn’t cover Alaska. I’ve been to a couple audiologists here in Anchorage and I wouldn’t say they followed best practices. I’m 71 years old now and looking for probably my last pair of hearing aids. My last pair of Oticon's (Opn 2) lasted me almost 8 years. I’m highly interested in the Intent. I found an Audiology Facility that offers them, but without knowing who passes the Best Practices locally, I’m now apprehensive in going to them. And, they couldn’t get me in any sooner than a month, April 4th. I have Medicare and TriCare and neither pay for hearing aids so it’s all up to me. Their review rating is 4.9. How do I go about finding an audiologist that meets the best practices in my city outside of the lower 48 states?

So in other words adequate hearing aids are going to become less accessible for those who can’t afford to pay cash for them. That really sucks for those with severe to profound loss who need the top level to receive functional ability. I have Xceed 2 SP but really need a premium level aid as a healthcare worker to be able to function in a healthcare setting (I work inpatient). I was really hoping for Intents because they sound like the solution to the issues I’m having with understanding speech in a busy hospital setting and for better connectivity for my digital stethoscope that I have to Bluetooth to my aids. I maxed out my Kansas Voc rehab benefits for new hearing aids. I was lucky they funded my last 3 pair and now I’m feeling screwed when my current aids are done which is coming soon as the sound quality is starting to significantly decline

Are you a candidate for a cochlear implant?
@nataliel2853
@nataliel2853 Місяць тому
Exactly. For those of us with profound loss, this royally sucks. I didn't choose my level of hearing loss. It's like saying to a leg amputee (and this what our hearing is equivalent to because I have lost the use of my ears), "so now we are only going to give you a leg prosthesis (and that's whata hearing aid is) without the foot because our best prosthesis includes the foot. Or an arm amputee, oh, here, is old 50s style hook arm prosthesis for you because we won't offer the arm prosthesis with fingers." My insurance doesn't cover hearing aids and these managed care providers get bulk pricing unlike individual audiologists so they can offer the best hearing aids for less money because of bulk pricing. This absolutely not good for the consumer. This isn't something that I can say, well, I can't afford to eat out today so I will stay home. I need all frequencies available for adjustments to help me and even then it's tough and only the top/best hearing aids offer that ability.
@nataliel2853
@nataliel2853 Місяць тому
@tedkat9764 cochlear implants are not without risks and are necessarily suitable for everyone's lifestyle. Additionally, having severe to profound loss does not mean that you have lost the ability to understand speech in all settings. I have severe and profound loss at the mid and high frequencies which affects my ability to understand speech in many situations but in one on one situations, I can do fine. So what if for some reason the implant doesn't work for me or I get a severe infection and now my hearing in one or both ears is completely gone when I had that ability before. It is not just a simple decision that one makes. All levels of hearing devices should be offered by insurance. My insurance covers nothing of my hearing aid cost. I am perfectly healthy otherwise and don't use it for anything else while others my age have hip and knee replacements or back surgery but not me, I have to pay out of pocket for my one healthcare need.

@@nataliel2853 with the Xceeds I am doing great with one-on-one and with the EduMic in class. Prior to this I had sense and Amigo FM with boots. Your advice for private citizens to address the senators and representatives is well-intentioned but unfortunately those days are long gone; through the guise of so-called "campaign contributions", our government officials are compensated by and totally dependent upon and owned lock, stock and barrel by private industry, including these huge health insurance companies who laughingly "manage our care" and these so-called "campaign contributions" are then spent in part at election time to influence the voters to elect, re-elect and maintain them in office under the false belief that they are working for the benefit of us private citizens. Our system is broken. The insurance companies dangle bright, shiny objects in front of citizens as extra benefits to join their "Advantage Plans" in return for which the insurance companies rather than the patients' doctors get to decide what level of health care one gets when care is needed. I am now retired but speak with years of inside knowledge of the industry.

@@DrGosalia let's face it, those that are impacted by this are those in the low to mid income bracket. Though I'd say the most severely are the middle income, because after bills, they barely have enough to pay for their groceries. Those in the low income category have Medicare and/or Medicaid, they get some some decent hearing aid coverage depending on the state. Both income parties though, cannot afford to go to Washington DC to speak to the House or Senate as a whole. Those congressman and congresswomen rarely will see their constituents in their local offices, that's usually a paid assistant and the suggestion usually ends up in file 13 aka the trash can. An email and phone call falls on deaf ears. Doctors can either go or send a lobbyist to go for them. More hearing aid specialists need to group together with the hearing aid manufacturers and start playing the game with the politicians. Campaign donations for promises, etc.

@bob-N4REE Місяць тому
Frankly, you sound like a Johnny-come-lately. ALL medical insurance, except hearing, went the way of managed care decades ago and our health care system has constantly eroded the value of all medical care. EVERYTHING is decided by a bean counter somewhere, from how much time a primary physician can spend with a patient to how much a specialist can deliver. Managed care came to the hearing care industry only a few years ago and started out at the mediocre level and can only get worse. I don't blame Oticon for their decision. They're right; why let b'crats destroy the value of their products. Yes, it is unfortunate for those who cannot afford "retail," but the rest of medical care is already that way. BTW, the people who suggest going to DC and asking politicians to help, need to understand that it's politicians who brought our healthcare system to the hot-mess it is today. Everything the government touches, it spoils.
@coldspring624

Imagine if our food industry was run the way our health care is "managed" - each family would pay a fixed amount as a "monthly food premium" to a local restaurant or grocery, who would decide what we get to eat when meal time comes around; one would come home for dinner after a day's work, imagining they might get a nice salmon dinner or steak along with a healthy salad, but would instead be delivered maybe a thin, greasy hamburger and a bag of fries because that's what the "food ins. co." decided that was all we needed! Sound ridiculous? That's how ridiculous our present health ins. industry is run. Or if your house was on fire and you had to call your fire insurance company, who would decide whether or not the fire department needed to be sent out; and if so, how much equipment would be needed to be sent out? Is this any more insane than what has been done to healthcare?
