Hi Charlie hope you’re well That’s so helpful. I’m not massive on learning rules but if they are made this simple (and don’t involve words like gerund or indicative) then I need to catch up I’ve been hearing people say très très a lot and by the time they get to the second r they’re really rolling Merci Mark

Salut Mark !! Ah I'm glad you found it helpful. For me, it's all about simplifying things so when you speak you don't have to think about too much, then you just build up these simple rules. You should check out our French Pronunciation e-Course, I go over all of the rules of phonetics in an easy to understand way. We'll open enrollment on October 24th for about a week, you can sign up for our free French e-Course to get notified when it's available at www.StreetFrench.org ☺

Hi Charlie. Like you, I am fascinated by French phonetics. Like everything, when you start something new you can tend to 'overdo' things but after time you relax and it all becomes more subtle and much less stressed, much like driving a car. Two words that could be practiced are 'rural' and 'ruraux'. They make additional demands on the muscles at the back of the palate because we have two 'R''s close to each other. Keep up the fascinating channel. Paul from London.

Some preceding voiceless consonants such as 'c', 'p' and 't' tend to make it sound rough, but 'f' while also a voiceless consonant, generally doesn't. Well, not as much if at all in my opinion.
