Check out our line of inverters here:
Pure Sine Inverters: wagan.com/collections/pure-si...
Modified Sine Inverters: wagan.com/collections/modifie...
Pure Sine or “Normal Sine, Sine, Pure Sine, PSW, True Sine“ is the smooth sine wave as seen in the picture above. In the simplest of explanations, it is the cleanest and best type of sine wave due to its smooth oscillation waveform. Pure sine is the type of sine wave that comes from your AC (wall) outlets in your house and allows all electronic devices to operate smooth, clean, and efficiently.
Modified Sine or “Square, Modified, Simulated, MSW” is a manufactured type of sine wave that is less expensive to produce. Able to operate with most electronic devices, it is an affordable and adaptable alternative to the Pure Sine Wave Inverter.
Getting Technical
Pure Sine Wave (PSW) is the best because the voltage rises and falls smoothly and changes polarity instantly when the voltage crosses 0V (zero volts). This does not cause excessive heat build-up or add stress to electronic devices as it is a smooth and consistent change.
On the other hand, Modified Sine Wave (MSW) is more like a light switch with abrupt voltage rise and falls (as seen in the waveform) with long periods of rest at 0V. This abrupt change causes some devices to simply not work, create electrical noise, over-heat, and can cause failure in sensitive electronic devices.
So what does that mean for me?
Ideally, the Pure sine Wave (PSW) is the best solution to your power needs; it allows all electronic devices to operate as intended. The downside of a PSW inverter is the cost to manufacture it; the price can be 2-4 times the amount of a Modified Sine Wave Inverter.
Modified Sine Wave Inverters (MSW) are inexpensive to produce and provide the same amount of power (in watts) as the PSW Inverters do. Unfortunately, the square sine wave produced is not compatible with some sensitive electronic devices such as rheostats (dimmer switches, variable speed devices), built-in clocks, heaters, CFL & HID lights, some power tool battery chargers, sewing machines with variable speed controls, copy machines, and laser printers.
Which is my best choice?
If you are in need of an inverter that is going to power sensitive electronics such as: medical devices, computers, anything with a dimmer/variable speed, heater/heating coil, or just needs clean power; buy the pure sine inverter… you can’t go wrong with that choice.
On the other hand, if you need temporary power while tail-gating, camping, road-trips or to charge your laptop/two-way radios, power fans, run a blender, power a microwave, etc., the modified sine wave inverter is smart and affordable choice.
The Take-a-way
Modified Sine Wave inverters sound scary, right? In reality, MSW inverters are not scary, dangerous, etc., they just need to be used appropriately. I have used a MSW inverter for most of my life during camping, road-trips, RVing and the like…and have never experienced any problems with them.
MSW Inverters are perfect for 90% of applications for the average user; you must realize their limitations and use them accordingly. Want to err on the side of caution(?)... buy a Pure Sine Wave Inverter and you cannot go wrong!

Brings back memories of using these oscillators at high school. I asked my physics teacher why the peak and low were fuzzy in my lab experiment and he said it was due to poor wire connection, air/oxygen acting as capacitor and sure he was thrilled someone asked that question. Thanks for the great explanation. For my RV, PSW it is going to be. Subscribed.

The fact that Justin replies to viewers inquiries made me subscribe without question. Anyway, I have a 1500W MSW inverter and currently learning what can I use it for. I bought it mainly to lessen my electric consumption from the grid and aid my electric needs when there are power outages. Learned it the hard way that a 7Ah battery would only last you a couple of minutes and the other two 40Ah lead acid batteries I have needs to be overhauled. The other one won't take charge and the other just discharge by itself really quick. I am thinking on investing on a 150Ah solar battery but it would cost me couple hundred dollars. It would be nice to be able to run at least one room on pure solar.

If you need help determining what size battery bank would fit your needs, add up the wattage that your room uses in a day and shoot that number over; I can give you an estimate of what Ah battery bank you'll need. Additionally, look into getting multiple batteries or even wiring 6V batteries in series to get the battery bank you desire (you don't necessarily have to use only 1 battery in your set-up)! -Justin

@@WaganTech Thank you so much, man! That's actually smart! Maybe I'll buy batteries(20-40Ah) one at a time so I don't have to spend one time on a single battery. Will it be fine to connect five 40Ah batteries in parallel? That way, I would have a 200Ah battery set instead of a single 150Ah or 200Ah battery. Total wattage for my room is 633W. Mainly lights, chargers and two inductive loads, a fan and a 3D printer with peak power at 270W. I tried to open the printer power supply connected to the inverter but it doesn't turn on. What more is instead of low voltage beep the inverter doesn't beep at all but gives off a small tricking sound. I immediately disconnected it since it doesn't sound good if it last any longer.
@WaganTech
@WaganTech Рік тому
@@Barkley1835 You can connect 5 of the 40Ah batteries in parallel and it will work fine for powering your inverter, but you'll have trouble charging them. If you connect a battery charger to the first battery, it will fully charge, but each sequential battery will receive less of a charge and won't ever fully charge; I would only recommend charging a max of 2 connected batteries in this battery bank set-up. As for the inverter, is it one of ours? If so, which model? The 3D printer uses a heated assembly (hot end) and can be problematic with MSW inverters. If possible (and can be done by a trained professional), I would check the inverter's fuse(s).

Question: Would a surge protector be helpful in keeping a proper current and voltage?
@WaganTech

Usually a surge protector is used downstream of the inverter and is a good choice to use in conjunction. The inverter can handle fluctuations, so anything upstream isn't really needed on a standard vehicle setup (other than a fuse/circuit breaker).

I've definitely have had issues with modified sine wave inverters for my laptops, I've had it cause the mouse to jump around and some weird stuff like that. More electrical noise, I definitely think it can cause problems for a laptop
@WaganTech
@WaganTech 2 роки тому
In general, I wouldn't recommend MSW inverters for use with sensitive electronics like computers. However, laptops are usually ok since they have a transformer built in that "smooths" out the incoming current. Of course, this isn't always true for all inverters/laptops as you may have found. If the inverter was one of ours, it most likely would have worked just fine with your laptop.

@WaganTech
@WaganTech 2 роки тому
Jeremy, Let's talk about that PS5 and 43" TV in an 18 wheeler?! That is AWESOME!!! As you suspect, that electrical noise is likely made by the sine wave produced from your inverters. But, before you go and drop all that cash on a new inverter, there are some options to consider. You can try using ferrite rings on the power supply line, they're inexpensive and can reduce line noise. You may want to look into devices called "noise/line/supply/EMI" filters (usually $10-20). Although these are more intended for alternator/ignition signal filtering, they can often have beneficial effects on inverter/appliance noise filtering. It is possible that the inverter is emitting an electrical noise (EMI), shielding the electronics may help. Additionally, make sure that you are using large enough gauge cables to the inverter and that you are using the inverter's grounding terminal correctly (to a chassis ground). Alternately, you may opt for a quality PSW inverter and be done with the interference completely.

The UPS should be able to be charged via an inverter (most UPS have a switching power supply included with them) - but how are you going to power the inverter? If your fridge draws 6A @ 120V, then it is about 720 watts and will work well with a slimline 1500. If you have a way to power the inverter, then I think you'll be fine.

@WaganTech
@WaganTech 2 роки тому
Mr. Shark, An electrical "hum" is normal when using an MSW inverter. This is due to the harmonics/frequency and the sine wave itself. Are you plugging your projector/laptop into a GFI outlet or directly to the inverter? The GFI can create a humming noise. Is there a box on the laptop/projector's power cord (switching power supply)? If so, these will usually filter the incoming power and create a buzzing noise while doing so; which is safe to use.

I took a look at the specs on the @NorthernToolCo website and I see that it has an adjustable amperage range as you stated. 20-80A @120V would be 2400-9600 watts. If you're going to be staying at the lower end, I would recommend a 3000W inverter. Take note, the inverter will have to offer high output terminals as most inverters 120V AC outlets won't be able to handle 2400W+. Is the inverter one of ours? 3000W is plenty for the mini-fridge to get power from, so there'd be no problem there. Even if the engine isn't running and the inverter is connected to the batteries, the fridge will still get power and will operate just fine as long as it isn't getting a voltage spike. If the inverter isn't one of ours, the MSW could be a culprit too.

What inverter you will need for a air tire compressor with AC cord
@WaganTech
@WaganTech 2 роки тому
Take a look at the air compressor and it should say what the wattage or amperage required to power it is (somewhere on it should say something like "110-120v" and "100w" or an amperage rating like "2.3a"). If the wattage is listed, then you'll know what size inverter you need... If it says "100w", then add the 20% as suggested in the video, and get an inverter that's 120 watts or greater. If it has an amperage listed, multiply that number to the voltage. Let's use the 2.3 amps example that I gave earlier, and it would be 2.3 x 120 (amps times voltage equals watts) to get 276 watts. Add the 20% to that and you would get around 331w.

Our inverters usually (depending on the model) will emit an audible "low voltage" alarm at around 10.5V ± 0.5V and then completely shut-down at 9.5V ± 0.5V. We set the threshold at this level to protect the battery from over-discharging (which ultimately increases the battery lifespan).

What size inverter do I need to run a 1.5 hp well pump off grid?
@StringerNews1
@StringerNews1 Рік тому
1.5 mechanical HP equates to about 1119 electrical Watts. No motor is 100% efficient, so the actual power needed to run will be above that. What really matters is what it takes to start the motor. A 1500W inverter may be able to run the motor but not start it. Without measuring the peak current draw and inverter impedance, one can only guess about that part. If you can, buy from a place that takes returns, so if you find you need a bigger inverter, you can trade the other one in.

I have a question. Do you get all of the power from both types of inverter? I am wondering if I have a1000w inverter does that mean I can use five 100w devices and be putting the inverter under 50% of it's load capacity because 5x100w=500w that seems obvious to me. However, an ebay listing for a 1000w inverter threw me in a loop talking about how you have to buy one that is rated several times higher than what you want to use. I want to know if this is true? is it a pro tip for modified sine to offset any potential issues? Or is this simply a marketing tactic to get me buying more than what I need to part with extra cash? It didn't seems right to me so thought I would ask. Thanks.
@WaganTech
@WaganTech Рік тому
This is a great question and is semi-easily answered! Most inverters on the market will claim to output a specific wattage (like 1000W), but are only able to output that amount for a short amount of time (like 20 mins) before they have to start dropping - sometimes the drop is as much as 25%! We coined the term "TrueRated Power" to let our customers know that the power output printed on the inverter is the actual output that it will supply for at least 24 hours straight... in other words, our inverter says "1000W" and it will output 1000W. To keep the inverter in the optimal performance range, I suggest buying an inverter that is about 15-20% higher wattage than what you need. If you have a 500W load (or 5x100W devices), then I would suggest an inverter that is about 600W (if it's one of ours). Another issue that other manufacturers use is printing the "peak" or "surge" wattage as the inverter's name. This is misleading because you go out to buy a 1000W inverter and then find out that it is "1000W Peak" which won't power your required load. This is why we try to be transparent and helpful so our customers know exactly what they're buying. If you want to read more about our TrueRated Power, click here: wagan.com/blogs/news/what-is-truerated-power

A MSW "will" operate nearly any device rated for standard line voltage, BUT not as good as a PSW inverter. Everything, but maybe a heater or old fashioned light bulb will take a performance hit from a MSW inverter, as much as 20% loss compared to a real sine wave AC source. If you try to measure the output voltage from a typical modified sine wave inverter with a standard cheap multimeter, it will read around 108-112 volts. It is showing an average voltage level. To prove a point, take 2 inverters, one MSW, one pure sine wave both rated at least 1000 watts. Plug a vacuum cleaner into one of them, listen to the noise. Then plug vac into the other one and listen again. When plugged into the PSW inverter, vac will run faster than when plugged into the MSW unit! Like the video says, a pure sine wave inverter will cost more than a MSW, but nowadays it's not 2 or 3x the price. Another downside of a pure sine inverter, is that it draws more idle current than a mod sine unit. Those low frequency (iron transformer) heavy jobbers are really pigs. Always tradeoffs.

Considering the majority of inverters are manufactured overseas, what really is it that costs so much more to produce a psw over a msw, besides a few extra computer control boards manufactured by a robotic device with minimal hands on assembly? I've seen plenty of inverter components and video breakdowns including the Wagon brand and they all seem to have more in common than different.
@WaganTech
@WaganTech Рік тому
James, you bring up a really good point. For the most part, you are right; an inverter is an inverter with no discernable differences between models/brands/etc. to the untrained eye. When you really get into the inverter, you'll see major differences in components: quality/lifespan/ and most importantly lifecycle. The first thing you'll notice with our inverters is the conformal coating. This is not something that every manufacturer does as it adds costs, but it adds weather-resistance, protects the circuit board (from stuff like dusts), and increases the overall life and reliability of the unit. Component quality is another benchmark. Cheap components breakdown quickly and tend to fail early. We commonly see this with less expensive brands; the components will work for a few months, and then cease operation altogether rendering the inverter useless. Our inverters source reliable quality components that are tested and duty-cycle rated to perform at or above our standards. They are run at thousands of cycles and for weeks upon end to ensure that they can handle the loads applied to them. Another important factor is over-rating components to handle the use/misuse often applied by the human hand. Another critical aspect of inverter manufacturing is ensuring that the components are correctly sized to handle the task. We've seen lesser inverters running barely capable capacitors/transformers that will only handle the correctly sized load - if overloaded, they become damaged and no longer work. They'll use a 17V component because its cheaper, while we'll use a 24V unit to handle the occasional overload because it's better. Another performance factor is the actual output of the inverter. This is a HUGE one! Many (if not most) inverters will claim a wattage on the unit, but is unable to sustain that wattage for any useable length of time. This is the reason that we coined the term "TrueRated Power" - TrueRated Power is Wagan Tech’s coined term for truth in advertising and performance. While actual output wattage of competitor’s inverters varies greatly, Wagan Tech inverters help consumers to understand and trust that the number printed on the inverter is the actual output of the device (and will sustain that output load for at least 24 continuous hours). Lastly, we have "boots on the ground" in the factory who are constantly testing the units to ensure that each one can handle the use it was intended for. Quality Control is ultra important to us; we live by the "buy once, cry once" motto - we want you to have an inverter that is only installed once and never has to be messed with again.

A quick calculation with a standard battery bank (derating included) would suggest a 140Ah battery bank would be required to power that load for 3 hours.

Great videos. Can I run two desktop two routers and 2 desktop screens on a modified sine wave? Also, can I supply these 6 items with a fully charged 12v car battery for 8 hours? Thank you in advanced.
@WaganTech
@WaganTech 2 роки тому
Mary, you can run those devices off of modified sine wave inverter; however, I would suggest a pure-sine for this application. Let me know the wattages of each item, the battery amp-hour rating (Ah), and I can tell you if they'd run for the required 8 hours.

Is a modified soundwave inverter OK to use for a TV?
@WaganTech
@WaganTech 2 роки тому
For most TVs, Yes - Modified Sine Wave Inverters can be used. Please note, if the TV has a 3-prong plug, the inverter will likely need to be properly grounded (as it should be) in order for the TV to work.

Can a modified sine wave be converted into a pure sine wave? If so, how? Your video is very valuable.
@WaganTech
@WaganTech 2 роки тому
No they cannot be changed. The internals between a modified sine wave and a pure sine wave inverter are significantly different.
@StringerNews1
@StringerNews1 Рік тому
A modified sine wave is made up of many different sine waves, and you could filter it to remove the ones that you don't want. It would be expensive and perhaps unstable, and you'd be throwing away a fair amount of the available power. But it can be done.

For the most part, MSW Inverters can operate nearly any device. The only time that you may experience issues is with rheostat or dimmer switch controlled devices, some CFL bulbs, and some clocks. There is no comprehensive list as some devices may work with one unit but not another.

The AVR wont affect the sine wave itself; which would be the cause for the potential problem. Most inverters have some sort of voltage regulation built-in, so the AVR would be redundant.@@benaplokcampandgo

I want to buy a MAFELL ERIKA 85 table saw. This is VERY EXPENSIVE (USD$8,000) MADE IN GERMANY. Pete, if you buy a reputable quality modified sine wave inverter, you have nothing to be worried about.
