I am a short chick and even I would have trouble trying to just sleep in it. If you turn over in that thing, you will be soaked. Trying to ride out a storm would be very unpleasant. I don't even want to try and imagine needing to take a pee in the middle of the night. That tent is not even decent for kids to campout in the backyard. I don't even want to think of what could happen to someone out in the middle of nowhere in wet conditions. I am sharing this video with as many people as possible. Thank you, Luke.

I bought an identical tent a few years ago - but was branded Field & Stream. I used it in October during a moderate rain, but I also pitched it under a 9x12 tarp and kept the rain flaps on the entrance open. Like you said, the sides drooped inward, but other than that it was an OK experience. So a $20 tent combined with a $10 plastic tarp can work.

Luke, just got back from a 3 night four day camping trip. My 4 year old Gazelle T-4 is still doing great! I have a blowup bed/ twin size 20 inches high. I lay a cheap thin felt cover inside on the floor. It soft to walk on and helps to keep pokey things from puncturing the bed. I had three heavy rain storms come through also, No leaks! So also inside is a 3'X2' table and a standard size camping chair. My iPhone, laptop, lights, zip up luggage case and small fan complete whats inside my T-4. I don't think I could even crawl into that coffin yet backwards! But I know you just had to do it! Just tell Bass Pro to put a rainbow on both sides, Cheers, Eff Bud Light.

I thoroughly enjoy your videos and reviews, which I have occasionally passed on to family and friends. I've camped in good and bad situations. The only thing I can think to do if stuck out in the woods with this would be break down the tent, lay it flat as a ground insulator, and use the ground sheet as a tarp! You'd likely be somewhat drier! 🤔

Idk, I think I would opt for that shower curtain you were talking about in one video. Btw I had a storm kick up out here by the great lakes where the hail came down the size of baseballs. I was standing at my door trying to figure how to cover the windows on my trucks. . This hail was so damaging I had two of those shelterlogic garage in a box shelters. And the hail went right through them both. Yeah I feel sorry for some poor kids that go camping and get soaked. It could be deadly. Your vids are very informative. Now I know what look for in good tents. After seeing these vids I definitely carry an extra tent, or a big tarp.
@visnuexe

An ice storm can be just as damaging, it's been my experience. The weight of the ice just pulls on the seams, and and wind make the ice like a saw when the tent flaps!

It might be the form factor too, I had a single tent like that years ago and camped about a half dozen times in it, it got condensation like you experienced and the final time I used it before throwing it away was when it stormed and I was getting soaked, had to bug out to my 2 seater car to sleep the rest of the night.

Luke, always love watching your videos. We have a Bass Pro close to us and it just seems so pricey. I don’t doubt they have some good gear. This tent I agree is a death trap. If the rain would have been heavy and the outdoor temps would have been very cold for your neck of the woods, I could see how someone could get hypothermia. If they were not trained on how to get out of that situation it could be a life and death situation. Thank you for this series as I know it helps those that need to know before buying.

Back story, I've been "camping" for over 60 years. From backyard adventures to section hiking the AT, including disaster response, and SAR. None of my tents have cost me more than $100. I have always also bought 2 cans of CampDry or similar for each. Mine have always lasted 5- 10 years. I've never had the funds to put towards "good" equipment. Have I had some bad outings, yes! But so have all my friends who had much more money. That said, you are absolutely right. Each of the tents I've bought should have come with warnings and a free can of waterproofing and seamsealer! And believe me, had I had the money I would have bought better. Eureka has had some of the "better" cheap tents in my experience. Whether from SkyCity or Walmart, or Gander Mountain. Thanks for your advice and opinions. Better than the rest as far as I'm concerned.

I agree that quality matters but for folks on the cheap or casual campers, there might not be too many options. The main argument is that rain is not the only weather (which is majority of your testing). You could use it in cloud free skies and use a tarp when needed. Ventilation is a bigger concern here but some of the other tents you’ve failed could work in normal weather with a tarp combo for rainy weather.
@pyotrilyichtchaikovsky3733
@pyotrilyichtchaikovsky3733 Рік тому
If you are putting a tent under a tarp, why even bother with the tent. Just sleep under the tarp. Tarps are also often more expensive than these tents and the people who would be looking at buying this tent probably wont put a tarp over it. A tent has to resist a little rain, its the most basic function of a tent

@@pyotrilyichtchaikovsky3733 A wise owl tarp is $11 on Amazon, just checked. Look, I agree - ideally a tent should do everything. My beef is that the tests on this UKposts channel are always done in rain and the second a few drops show up, all hell break loose and it’s the worst thing ever and he has to always evac to his truck. I live in California and it’s sunny 10 months out of the year. These tents he keep failing would be just fine over here. For the freak storm scenario, you take a tarp. If you have money then by all means, get the right tool for the job that doesn’t need extra help. For a casual backpacker, these should work.

@@pyotrilyichtchaikovsky3733 Again, if you’re in a region like I am where it doesn’t rain 10 months out of the year, the purpose is mostly protection against the sun, wind and bugs - and some psychological safety of being in an enclosed space. Rain isn’t the only weather!
@pyotrilyichtchaikovsky3733
@pyotrilyichtchaikovsky3733 Рік тому
@@h.h.1266 Yes, but in many places rain is more common than sun and bugs. And still, a tent needs to protect you from the rain, its a basic requirement. I understand that if the region you come from this might not be as big of a risk but in a colder area, getting your sleeping bag wet is a good way to die or at the very least be in need of rescue and medical attention. Hypothermia is no joke and nothing chills you to the bone quicker than getting wet. Its legitimately dangerous because tents like these are also sold in areas where it rains and is cold, thus need to be able to withstand that. Or there could be very serious consequences.

I'm actually very surprised at Cabelas/Bass Pro for putting their name on it. As far as the best "cheap" tent I've ever had, it was (is) a Coleman Sundome. I paid less than 50 bucks for it, and it's held up really well. I don't use it anymore because I graduated to canvas tents.

I agree. I've been using my Coleman Sundome tent now for many years and never had any issues with it. I've camped out in it during torrential rain... I MEAN TORRENTIAL rain and never had a drop of rain get inside. Great tent for car camping at a campground.

if a tent leaks, you get wet it's cold out (temp drops at night) you freeze, yes you have all the equipment to survive (but it may get wet unless wool) maybe no one has died (or they have and it's just reported dead at scene) poorly made jackets can kill you if gotten wet (again i think it's report dead at scene) i can see the news headlines "leaking tent kills hiker" more at 11. or 7 hikers found on trail 2 survive for having better tent. with all that happens today would be interesting if anyone (police, forest service ever written up a report of cause of death because of wet tent) written as extreme cold cause death of camper/hiker for being wet from tent or something like that. but it could just be a saying like "this tent will kill you" as a general caution. but a good subject up bringing.

It seems like a lot of these tent makers simply don't rain test their tents. They get a pattern, cut up some material, sew it up and send it.

My friend brought this for an Appalachian trail section hike. He's about 6'4", 270 lbs, and I have no clue how he managed to get into it. We had a light misty rain and he got absolutely soaked, either from the rain, the condensation, or both. I slept great in a Teton Sports Vista 1 tent with minimal condensation on the rainfly. For my next section hike I bought the Kelty Late Start 1, as it is lighter and packs up smaller.

Snugpak Ionosphere is my go to tent if I just need a shelter and good night sleep. For a bit more room I use a Wild Country Zephyros by Terra Nova, I've used these in very bad winter weather and they do an excellent job. You just can't take short cuts on tents or sleeping systems, it's a bigger investment short term but it will soon pay itself back with better protection and longevity of kit.

I am glad Luke you are doing this series. It has been very informative and things to look for on an inexpensive camp & overnight hike or bike tent. You honestly don't know at times hiking that a strong wind, rain event could hit. Like one time on the Bruce Peninsula Trail, up on a cliff area overlooking Lake Huron. We needed and had a strong 2 person tent, well made in the 90's. It stood through wind, hail, lightning. Trees fell around us we were dry and safe from rain and wind. Had a rain tarp that went over tent, plenty of stakes and ropes for securing. Now quality has gone down for the makers of these tents. Basically 75.00 for a cheap fair to good tent that will keep you dry 85% of time. Maybe the coffin tent would be better used in the house for kids to play in.

Great review and series. This is exactly what people need to see before they go out and buy some “cheap” gear. I own another BP/Cabelas tent, and have had zero issues with my Ascend Nine Mile 1. Big difference between the $30 tent in your video and the $130 Ascend tent. I found my Ascend used, for $40, and that is the best $40 I have ever spent on a tent. Don’t pay full price for hiking/camping equipment, if you can help it.
