It’s not easy for a movie-star to age - especially when you’re a stop motion animated skeleton monster.
Phil, once a terrifying villain of the silver-screen, struggles to find work in modern Hollywood due to being an out-of-date special effect.

That's only part of the point, I think. It's also that through the wide eyes of children, even the crudest of old Hollywood special effects have magic. Jaded adults, coddled by CGI, can't see the wonder that's right in front of them. A child can. Movies often seek the child in us, particularly fantasy movies. I am a middle-aged, analog man in a breathless digital world. I get more out of the exhaustive, intimate, handmade sorcery of Willis O'Brien and Ray Harryhausen than I do out of all the motion-capture precision that clogs movie screens since the 1990s. Ich bin ein skeleton!

This is just an amazing homage to all the old film techniques. One thing that never ceases to amaze me is how much effort and work goes into these media. To this day the modern Alien franchise can never really beat the suits and animatronics they used in the originals. It's just not as scary, not as much heart. Same goes for Jurassic park. The original puppet they had to dry out every few minutes in the rain scene near the beginning has never been matched in quality in my opinion. Then there's all the old films such as Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal that are such gems. Even the new star wars series 'The Mandalorian' has recognised this and the child they use is a puppet. It's just so much more real. This is beautiful, and I honestly thought it was gonna have a bad ending, but the hope he has at the end just made me smile. Even if the critics don't find him scary for the movie, he's a terrifying monster anyway. Scare on little bone dude.

Um, I think it's a scene for comic effect, illustrative of the skeleton's frustration and anger, not a scoldy moral lesson on the wages of revenge. If it served to give you a thumbnail education in basic ethics, fine. For me, it simply and delightfully "fleshes out" the skeleton, which is the goal of the movie.

I like how most of the "real" things the Skeleton King interacts with have motion blur, yet he does not have it, being a stop motion figure. Except the scenes, where the "figure" was not animated frame by frame, but in a continuous manner, like at 5:17. The amount of detail put into this short film is really breathtaking. I did enjoy this a lot. Maybe some day we will see another movie completely made without any digital processing involved. I know, the cost would be too big to justify. But, if this would have been done without digital technique, it would be not that crisp and precise. I just checked the behind the scenes and a lot of CGI was involved. Those pioneers who did this in the 1960s were truly masters of their profession.
