Scarily, he doesn't remember this interview, He was still I guess, in some form, concussed...

In his book "Life on the edge" Richard said that getting back to being on Television that soon after he woke up was the biggest mistake of all. Because he doesn't remember the filming of the North Pole special, the fact that he even did that special that soon after waking up says a lot about his state of mind. He now says that he should have taken at least a year off to recover.

I found this from an article about his crash: "The Health & Safety Executive report on the accident stated that Hammond's "instantaneous reaction to the tyre blow out seems to have been that of a competent high performance car driver, namely to brake the car and to try to steer into the skid. Immediately afterwards he also seems to have followed his training and to have pulled back on the main parachute release lever, thus shutting down the jet engine and also closing the jet and afterburner fuel levers. The main parachute did not have time to deploy before the car ran off the runway." The report suggests that the accident may not have been recoverable even if the driver had reacted with no more delay than was humanly possible." He is truly a ballsy guy behind the wheel of a car and, to his credit, doesn't let his past crashes get in the way of him still racing.

I still believe that the only reason Richard Hammond is still alive is because of his own skill and quick reaction time. That clip of the crash is a testament to Hammond's awesomeness.

You can tell he's not recovered emotionally. I had a traumatic brain injury and I can relate, especially with the anger management. It's a long fight but he's lucky to be alive to fight it.

Only 3 months after a severe brain injury, and he's that lucid and articulate? Pretty remarkable.

Hammond has recently reunited with The Vampire, the dragster that nearly took his life, via DRIVETRIBE. He still fears it, even though it'll technically never do land speed record runs anymore. Stills fires, tho.

Richard Hammond was still very much broken here. His autobiography is fascinating and he admits he doesn’t remember this or the first series of Top Gear following the crash. He very much regrets doing this and coming back too soon.

I can imagine his eulogy: Richard "Hamster" Hammond He went too fast. Rest in piece.

Seriously old video, but I just found it. His description gave me chills. When I was 18 I was in a bad car crash, and it was literally "I stopped for gas and bought a Pepsi, and then it was 2 weeks later in the hospital".

I love Hammond to bits (loved Brainiac when I was younger) and genuinely cried tears of joy when it was reported that he had come to and all was well.

Hammond is actually invincible. Seriously, I just cannot possibly imagine him dying.

I went into a coma after bacterial pneumonia and when I woke up I was allergic to pomegranate.

I recently found out that Hammond's brain damage was worse than initially thought, like he was still having memory problems for a few years after, an example is that he has no memory of this interview at all

Here's the thing I doubt withe of the others could have survived. Hammond was in a much better shape than the other 2. James was originally supposed to do it. Thank god they are all fine.

He was still very much out of it here. He said he doesn't remember doing this interview, and you can see it here and there that he says things that are just not real.

it's weird how he and David Tennant seem so similar

All the jokes he made I believe are a way of deflecting the truth, which is that all of this terrified him. If he answered the questions directly, I’m convinced the interview would have been far more emotional.

He has three audio books that he has narrated. I just bought all three and can't wait to listen to them. He's such a gorgeous man--so sweet, and it's wonderful his family didn't lose him!

I'll never get over how these mannerisms can casually insult each other so often, and yet everyone had a good laugh about it and moves on. That's a kind of thick-skinned self security that I wish many more people would wear on a daily basis, especially in America. Everyone's so damned insecure that the littlest things that people can say call their whole essence into question. It's quite perplexing, and frankly just plain infuriating to watch. I have no idea why I felt the need to use this much vocabulary...I'm American. I suppose the proper comment should have been: "LOL, these dudes talk pretty funny but if they called me a "bugga" I'd kick der ass." I enjoyed the video nevertheless.

when i was about 1 or 2 (when he was in leeds) i was staying in the same ward as hammond, apparently he once was walking round with the nurses yelling hi to everyone, including my parents

This was a great interview! If only from the neuroscience point of view, it was great to have an insight of what a person with a previous brain injury might have experienced while recovering and what changes they noticed if any. And of course Hammond, as usual, is witty and is just very entertaining to listen to! Glad that he's all ok!

Im so happy he is still here and can still do what he loves. I watch Grand Tour and Top Gear when i'm at my worst just because I know it makes me feel better. Richard Hammond is like a hero to me.

I am watching this knowing there will be no more Top Gear....so sad. Those three men had such a relationship and friendship they could take the piss of each other and simply not offend....The sad thing is some people simply didn't get their sense of humour. I mean can you imagine the horror if Clarkson would've done what Richard just said they had an agreement would be said if any one of them croaked...'anyway...'? There would've been a public outcry from those who just didn't get it. From those of us enlightened ones, who did get it, well we would've been rolling on the ground holding onto our tummies... after watching the crash i believe the tyre got punctured

He does seem fairly normal, but in recent years he mentions not being right in the head for up to a year after the crash, even though he went back to work. Specifically the polar special..I remember him saying he was a bit off during the trip, and that he randomly cried when he was alone... I guess seeming normal doesnt neccesarily mean you are indeed fine. He ended up being extremely lucky..

I just read that a year or so after this interview that Richard had no memory of every being on this show. It's scary to think of how a brain injury can affect our memory, I'm very happy that Richard has made a complete recovery and is living a happy life with his wife and two young children. A very nice and funny gentleman.

So glad Richard is okay again, I so enjoy to watch him on TopGear and I'm glad he is going back to join Jeramy and James on the show.

I have gotten traumatic amnesia twice, first time in a car accident where the car ended up in four pieces and me standing up in the road looking at it calmly and the second the hospital did dumb stuff, but I remember being ordered not to drive for a certain period of time after coming home. I was DYING to drive again, it's like you think it's a necessary part of life even though it almost ended your life.

This show/set looks so late 90s!

I'm a huge fan of Top Gear. Yet, somehow, I wasn't aware of this accident until a few hours ago. This interview is frustrating, to say the least. The interviewer seems to have lost the art of *conversation*. He asks a question, and doesn't give Richard a full right of reply, before cutting him off, and cracking a gag. Given that Richard had survived a potentially fatal accident and, after four months, made himself available to talk about his experience, I would have thought that this git could have given more opportunity for Richard to articulate his thoughts and feelings, without so many rude interjections. Alas no. Jonathan, sometimes great television is not about you, it's about the guests, and knowing when to shut the hell up!!

A fascinating situation about an individual that underwent trauma to the frontal lobe. Especially from their perspective!

I was hit by a car when I was walking home from school, when I was 13. It was doing 50 in a 30mph zone and the doctor at the hospital said "you're very lucky, 7 out of ten people die being hit at that speed". Well I had a mangled left arm (which the doctors eventually saved) and a horrendous head injury and it did change my personality. I had been a happy, healthy little girl and after that I trusted nothing. I refused to go to school for six months, my mother home schooled me. I just couldn't cross the road any more, something inside me kicked in and I just couldn't. And just like Richard Hammond, I don't remember the incident at all. I just remember being in hospital and my parents looking very, very scared.

I love the skit that the brilliant Stewart Lee does about Top Gear . .utterly brilliant and truthful as you'll get . .

My brother got hit by a drunk band driver n was in an induced coma for 3 months so this interview means a lot x

Nice to see him back here doing the interview. Having seen the crash the man was very lucky to make a recovery. Terrible time for his family esp his wife who would have been torn between being with him in hospital and a mum to thier young family.

I never knew that he suffered a brain injury. I've been through that myself, however for me it was more than two weeks later. It was more like almost two months.

Thanks, I remeber the interview with Sterling Moss but again don't remember about that bit. But, I can definately remember that Hammond also discussed it with Johnathan Ross. I'm certain about that, just couldn't work out if it had been cut out of this on you tube or was a different interview with Johnathan Ross!
