Broken Vise Restoration - Gressel Switzerland.
In this video i'm restoring a broken swiss vise.
Like, comment, subscribe.
I bought this vise from a friend for 20$. It was super rusty and dirty, one part was missing, two screws were broken off and the movable jaw was completely stuck. Gressel is very well known in switzerland for making very good, if not the best vises. That fact made it absolutely worth to restore it. They still produce this type of vise today, they just made some very small changes over the years. I found out that they built their vises in this style until 1991. So it's at least 27 years old. It had the rough jaws on, but you could always choose if you want them with rough or flat jaws when you buy a new one. I'm not a fan at all of the rough jaws, because they ruin every surface of clamped pieces. So I decided to put flat jaws on. I still restored the rough ones and I'm going to keep them. I restored this vise for myself.
I hope you like my work and the video.

Keep this in mind people who are DIYers, this is an excellent way to get cheap tools. You don't have to restore them as good as he does, just clean them up and make sure they work. My uncle used to buy semi junk tools at auction and fix them up. If he couldn't make it work he had a couple of buddies who would help him. He had a shop full of tools you would think he paid thousands for. Most were only a couple hundred or less. Nice machines from the 30s, 40s, 50s, the good heavy duty stuff. Drill presses, a small lathe, band saws. None of them worked when he got them. Now he can build almost anything out of wood.

Truly the work of a craftsman. Everything was done to perfection. No shortcuts were taken. There was the benefit of having a lathe and a mill handy. ;-) Greasing everything well during reassembly - including pins, screws, locking collars and inner surfaces - will keep the rust away for years to come, just like the visible surfaces. The paint was a nice touch. It looked great. At the end you were able too crank the vice all the way in and out using just your finger. The restoration was flawless. Also, your English is very good.

Wow, I said earlier that the air hammer/riveting tool was the coolest one but the more I watch the more I become Indecisive... I will just say your skills are amazing and the things you restore compliment your skills very well. I wish I could send you some neat things I have from my great grand parents collection of antique things. I live in the original home place that was built in 1824 along with the grounds that have been untouched in as long. So in almost 200 years the generations that have come and gone and the things we’ve amassed are amazing. We have several barns, building, and even the home full of things from centuries ago.

So at first, (Like a lot of comments I see on videos like this) I am very glad that you did not add a sound track and that you added quick tidbit of text commentary. The video, in my opinion, is fantastic! Truly I thought, "How can someone make a restoration video of a vise, interesting?" Well I watched it all the way thru and somehow, you did it. I am also very impressed with the end result. I also like your solutions to the issues you faced along the way. Nice work sir!

There is a difference between restoration and refurbished, you sir do restoration, almost everyone else I’ve seen does refurbish.I saw you uploaded this video and got excited about watching it.I like that first off you don’t show the finished work in the thumbnail which builds excitement, second off you don’t cut corners. If you uploaded 100s a day I’d watch them all,I can’t wait for the next one. Thanks for this video!
