Passengers onboard a Ryanair a plane that was forced to divert from its Athens-Vilnius route and make an emergency landing in Minsk where officials arrested a dissident journalist, have described being tired and uncomfortable. Belarus has faced international condemnation after forcing a Ryanair flight carrying an opposition activist to land in the Belarusian capital, Minsk, in order to arrest him. Some European leaders have called it an 'act of state terror and kidnapping'

In its statement, the European Union "calls on the International Civil Aviation Organization to urgently investigate this unprecedented and unacceptable incident" and announces new sanctions against Belarusian officials and to isolate the country. However, on July 3, 2013, the European Union forced the presidential plane of Bolivia, carrying the president in office Evo Morales, to land in Vienna (Austria) on pain of being shot down. The EU intended to search it and arrest Edward Snowden, whom the United States believed to be on board. This type of incident is therefore not "unprecedented and unacceptable" from an EU perspective.

Then protests started, oficial government stance was that absolute majority of the country supports beloved leader and nothing is happening. No joke, during the first 100k protest in the capital in August main TV channel was playing russian pop concerts, local media was banned from reporting, state tv journalists even walked out of job because they werent alowed to report (next day they were all fired, some even arrested and replaced by "freelancers" from Russia). Now where the Roman comes in: he created NEXTA, on telegram (russian belarusian facebook whose special quality is that supposedy government cant detect account owners, so its extremely popular and i think even above actual facebook in Belarus). NEXTA was a blog on which he basically shared clips of protests mostly filmed by people themselves, reported on arrests, tortures all the bs government was doing and which was hidden by the media. NEXTA became actually more popular than traditional media by some estimates. During protests it also became usual that on the day of protest it would be NEXTA where the location would be droped several hours before the start, so that special forces would have less time to prepare. As a result NEXTA became terrorist organisation and he became extremist (oficially in Belarus). He ran away to Poland, but as you saw they forced an EU plane to land to get him.

Airline pilots also change jobs frequently. You could be flying in a Ryanair airplane flown by pilots who just came back from working for Emirates. What Belarus has done has long been practiced by the West. The cases of the forced landing of the Bolivian plane in Austria and the Belarusian one in Ukraine for some reason did not cause any reaction in the Western media. @@Siberian_Bear72 Ok, but that plane just took off from Ukraine and was still on Ukraines air space when they ordered it to return. So it is not exactly similar situation. If I take a plane from Germany and soon after take off it is asked to return, that is pretty ok... I understrand because Germany checked in the passangers, so it has some rights over the plane. But if I took a plane from Germany and then on France airspace France asks it to land (even if I am going to Italy) that would not be ok, because France has nothing to do with that plane. Belarus had nothing to do with that flight, it did not start from Belarus and it did not end at Belarus... they just picked up a random plane (which took of from Greece and was going to LIthuania, so nothing to do with Belarus) from the air so its worse than the Ukraine situation.

@Mike Hunt Yes, it is pretty different situation. The Ukraine case is like Check in situation where Ukraine is checking passangers. if they are checking passangers little late (even if in air) that is quite acceptable.
