======== En Livstid I Krig LYRICS =======
Men vem saknar mig?
Så se mig som den
En make, en vän
Fader och son som aldrig kommer hem
Men vem sörjer mig?
Gick ut i strid för Sverige, blev döpt i blod
Där ute väntar döden, inte hjältemod
I fält där fränder faller, hörs ingen sång
Utmanar våra öden, ännu en gång
Långt hemifrån
Döpas och dö i strid
Och världen brann
För kriget det kan
Förgöra en man
Jag ger mitt liv för mitt fosterland
Men vem saknar mig?
Så se mig som den
En make, en vän
Fader och son som aldrig kommer hem
Men vem sörjer mig?
Och när min tid har runnit ut
Vem bryr sig då?
De kämpar på
Får en soldat ett värdig slut?
Få somna in
Försvinna bort
Och aldrig vakna
För kriget det kan
Förgöra en man
Jag ger mitt liv för mitt fosterland
Men vem saknar mig?
Så se mig som den
En make, en vän
Fader och son som aldrig kommer hem
Men vem sörjer mig?

The 2 versions of this song truly express the Sabaton's principle of oppose war, honor soliders - the English version sings about the 30 years war in a very negative light, while the Swedish version immortalizes an unknown soldier and his forgotten peers. "Has man gone insane" is the most powerful line in the English lyric, while "Men vem sörjer mig?" ("But who'll mourn for me") is easily what makes most people tear up in the Swedish version.

For our none Swedish speaking friends :) "I look around and see my home disappear My time at home now feels far too short Only youth, hardly a man when duty called me If I get to see my home again, I do not know Among relatives from my village, I went out to battle And the world burned For the war it can Destroy a man I give my life for my homeland But who misses me? So see me as it A husband, a friend Father and son never coming home But who mourns me? Went out in battle for Sweden, was baptized in blood Out there, death awaits, not heroism In fields where relatives fall, no song is heard Challenging our destinies, once again Far from home Be baptized and die in battle And the world burned For the war it can Destroy a man I give my life for my homeland But who misses me? So see me as it A husband, a friend Father and son never coming home But who mourns me? "Guitar solo" And when my time has run out Who cares then? They are struggling Does a soldier get a dignified end? Get to sleep Disappear And never wake up For the war it can Destroy a man I give my life for my homeland But who misses me? So see me as it A husband, a friend Father and son never coming home But who mourns me?"

I don't speak the language, and to be honest before I found this band, I never cared. I also didn't care much about history. This was the very first song I ever heard by this band, the Swedish version. I was already in a particularly rough patch in my life, and then I found this randomly. I broke down. I could not understand a word of it, but it crushed me that night. I've always believed music affects so many people because it's pure energy and that night, it could not have been more true for me. I searched everything I could about this song and band that brought me quite literally to my knees that night. I found so many more songs, about history, things I never knew. It was the beginning of my absolute love for them. My fathers side of the family was in the military, and I never really cared in the past. This band changed that. I can't explain it really, and to the average netzien, it likely sounds like the ramblings of a madman. I accept that. I wanted to say that Sabaton, you changed quite a bit for me that night and those going forward. Thank you. I hope one day I will find the courage and the means to see you in concert for myself. Best wishes to you and yours.

The reason the Swedish empire was so successful is because, as mentioned in the lyrics of the song, the soldiers knew and fought for eachother. Not for the king, even though he was a formidable man. These were men from villages who fought among other men who probably went to the same church as they did every Sunday. Sweden only had 1 million inhabitants at this time.. the power of friendship. "Among kinsmen from my village i left for battle" this song is so damn powerful and historically accurate.

For any potential history buffs out there (Who might be interested in Swedish history) to have some context to all of this. During the time period this album is taking place, the common people were incredibly poor. I'd guess that an aprox 90-95% of the SWE-population were farmers, farmhands or indentured servers of various forms, people outside of the wealthy elite had very little power and democracy was hardly conceptionalized at all as the monarchy and church held most of the power. People were overburden with taxation as many of the Swedish kings waged wars which forced many young men who had only just started having some leverage in their own homesteads and farms out to die in wars they had very little to say about at all, many of them hardly ever even reached the battlefields at all since a lot of the war camps they were assigned to were raging with various diseases. So I find a very deep poetic meaning in this entire album when I have the history to compare it to, Sabaton indeed sparks the interest to dig deeper into history with such a way of making history live through their music. Tack för allt er fenomenala arbete med musiken, vi ses i Februari i Huskvarna.

Here is a letter from Wilhelm von Schwerin who was a 15 year old Swedish soldier who fought in the finnish war in 1808 "Kronoby Headquarters 17 September 1808" "My beloved parents!" "i have not since Grisslehamn found any place I could write from, for the post office always follows the headquarters, which is far apart from the army. Since we went and drifted on the lake until the end of August, we finally got to land in Kristinestad. The disembarkation went in one day, and at night we marched a mile to Lappfjärd. We lay and slept as best we could, when the alarm went off and I had to leave my comfortable bed. The deal lasted 5 to 6 hours, but no battery was allowed. The Russians were defeated, and we pursued them all the way to Ömossa, 20 km from Lappfjärd. There was a halt, and Lieutenant Colonel Drufva was detached with 500 men and 2 cannons under my command to remain here with orders to fight to the last man. Here was a pitiful location! The people saw themselves 20 miles apart from the army, stationed against the main force of the Russians. My people were sad, they saw the uplanders being released every evening, but for nine days they had to lie incessantly on the field guard and, together with me, were soaked with heavy rain for many nights and days. Nothing but my tender care for them could keep them from complaining, I always and gladly use my excess money of my allowance for their benefit. 9th in the morning we were violently attacked. I would now for the first time go into the fire myself, I would bring my people there for the first time, and I would with 2 cannons defend the place against the enemy's infinite number of howitzers and cannons. The first was not difficult; I immediately took my cold and remained cold. The second was worse. My people were in the fire for the first time, they looked for the bullets and ran behind just at the most crucial moment. I could not run after, but did myself 5 man service at the cannon. When the business had slowed down somewhat, I went almost exhausted after them, imagining their cowardice, then they all sprang forward like lit candles each in their places. Here people fell like grass. Now it was time. The Cossacks charged at my exposed cannons 3 times, threw their darts, but I met them with canisters, and they withdrew. In this way, we continued the business under a constant fire for 5 hours and retreated 1 1/2 miles, where content was made. Here came Drufvan with the whole corps of officers, embraced me, thanked me for saving them. The people cheered and wished me a lasting welfare. Soon we had a battle, the longest and bloodiest here in this war. This stood at Oravais and lasted from kl. 6 in the morning until kl. 11 in the evening. I entertained the enemies alone until dinner by firing my cannons, when at this time I was wounded. They were just about to drag away when one of my men told me that I was run over: I scratched myself, sat on a cannon horse, for my own was shot, let the people cheer, put me first in the lead, shouted comrades, follow me: I commanded march, march and struck through the enemy, who greeted me with a bayonet. I got 3 bullets in my coat, and many of my people were stabbed. Generals Adlercreutz and Vegesack thanked me most sincerely. In the morning I would go out and reconnoiter, when I got a bullet through the hat, from which I fell over. I discovered the devil behind a rock, took the rifle of a soldier and shot him. In the evening towards dusk I got a new injury, they dragged me to the nearest village, where I lay until the enemy's bullets came in through the windows. I would have stayed, if not for a noble officer I had not yet gotten to know threw me on his back and we happily got away. Our loss is probably 2,000 men and 30 to 40 officers. General Aminoff, the generous man, picked me up, and now I'm pretty well." "Goodbye, beloved and worshiped parents and siblings! Live always well, wish you always affectionate son, brother and friend." "Wilhelm" it ended with "The general is in such a hurry that I have no time to enumerate the number of lost officers of the Upland and Westmanland regiments." Wilhelm passed away 27 september 1808 at an age of just 15, 10 days after this letter was written

I look around and see my home disappear My time at home now feels far too short Only youth, hardly a man when duty called me If I get to see my home again, I do not know Among relatives from my village, I went out to battle And the world burned For the war it can Destroy a man I give my life for my homeland But who misses me? So see me as it A husband, a friend Father and son never coming home But who mourns me? Went out in battle for Sweden, was baptized in blood Out there, death awaits, not heroism In fields where relatives fall, no song is heard Challenging our destinies, once again Far from home Be baptized and die in battle And the world burned For the war it can Destroy a man I give my life for my homeland But who misses me? So see me as it A husband, a friend Father and son never coming home But who mourns me? And when my time has run out Who cares then? They are struggling Does a soldier get a dignified end? Get to sleep Disappear And never wake up For the war it can Destroy a man I give my life for my homeland But who misses me? So see me as it A husband, a friend Father and son never coming home But who mourns me?

I wanted to show the class one example song that they could listen to and I chose to show this video between 01:00 and 02:18 so thank you Sabaton!
