Cecilia is schizophrenic and autistic. When we first met in 2017 she was experiencing hallucinations nearly every minute of every day. Now five years later, Cecilia has found a treatment plan that greatly reduces her hallucinations. She has also founded an organization that aims to connect people with psychosis and empower them to speak about their experiences. Cecilia hopes that those out there who are struggling do not give up.

The work Cecilia is doing with Students with Psychosis is groundbreaking and lifesaving. Anybody who would like to support this organization can contribute at bit.ly/StudentsWithPsychosis . Every donation will go directly to Students with Psychosis to widen their reach and allow them to continue to provide this pivotal resource to so many. I was blown away by witnessing their work first-hand and am so proud to call Cecilia a friend.

This made me cry. My husband, a veteran, victim of abuse, struggled with psychosis. He was so paranoid he'd never get help. He'd never open up to anyone, and even didn't share everything with me. The song the guy sang had me in tears. I know my kids dad struggled in sleep and in life. I tried to comfort him and give him all of my love, but he couldn't stay away from the liquor which helped him escape. He died with no help in 2020. They often go undiagnosed with no one they can open up to, feeling alone. Dying alone. Cecilia, you love are sent straight from heaven. God's angel down here on mission. You are so intelligent and self aware. I send you my light as you keep shining yours. Thank you for not giving up on yourself. It warms me to see the community you guys have built ♡

It disturbs me that her mental health team tried to make out her wanting to follow her dreams was part of a delusion. I think there is an assumption by the medical community that because people with psychosis have altered perception in one area of their thoughts they lack capacity for rational decision in other areas of their lives. So I'm glad to hear both Cecilia and Students with Psychosis are both flourishing, they both very much deserve to.
@corvarts9311
@corvarts9311 Рік тому
This 100%! Psychosis can be debilitating but it doesn't mean it's impossible to follow your dreams. Might be harder, might take longer, but by no means impossible.
@LeftOfToday
@LeftOfToday Рік тому
It doesn't even have to be psychosis for a therapist to diminish one's dreams on account of making whatever connection to their patient's diagnosis. I can speak from experiencing of having had a therapist literally scream at me and leave me for going back to school and following my dreams, all because I didn't tell her first. I don't think I needed her permission, but apparently she thought I did. It has still left doubt in me that I was 'crazy' to follow my dreams despite having graduated, and despite having been in a career I enjoyed for 7 years (up until my physical health failed me more recently). Having a mental illness can set someone up to doubt and question themselves that much more than average; it's the worst when your own therapist - instead of supporting you - just amplifies that self-doubt.

Even worse, I read an interview she gave where she said her parents didn't want her seeking help when she realized she had schizophrenia because they didn't want it on her record, or theirs. As someone who works in the mental health field, I can concur that there is still a LOT of stigma around schizophrenia. I’ve worked with clients who have hid their symptoms from me for years, which I both understood while making me extremely sad for them. From what I’ve learned, people can become incredibly lonely with that disorder. We need to make space for everyone in society who wants to be part of it.

Holy crap.. When they were talking about her having been previously interviewed for the channel before, i WOULD NOT of guessed which one it was.. She both looks and comes across entirely differently! Amazing what a difference the right treatment regime and lifestyle habits can make.. I work in mental health and i see people who've either given up on life entirely, or just can't see how something as simple as changing our lifestyle habits could be so effective in enabling us to lead the lives we want to lead. Cecilia, you're an inspiration! I really hope you can help others struggling with Scitzophrenia see that they don't just have to resign themselves to a disability check and hiding themselves away from the rest of society. We all have something we can contribute, no matter what stuggles we face; and it seems Cecilia is living proof of that!

Ive been watching SBSK for years and I vividly remember Cecilias interview.. I went off to college in 2018 and had trouble sleeping. I went to a doctor about it and got prescribed insomnia meds to help with sleep. A side effect that I ended up suffering from was auditory hallucinations. I didnt even know. In my apartment I was constantly hearing birds or bird noises and I thought nothing of it. I genuinely thought i was hearing birds at all hours of the day, and never considered my meds were doing something. I would lay in bed and hear birds all night, which kept me awake, and I was miserable. I thought about killing myself several times because my meds were making me tired but I couldnt fall asleep because I was being disturbed by bird noises and it felt never ending. It wasnt until I had a friend over and mentioned the birds and they told me they didnt hear it that I reached out for help. Ultimately I just stopped taking my insomnia meds and stopped hearing things, but now 4 years later I still have an awful time going to sleep. But it makes me happy to hear other peoples stories because it lets me know that Im not alone. I was on sleep meds for 2 years and suffered the entire time. Thank you Cecilia for telling your story and helping others and thank you Chris continually restoring my faith in humanity ❤

I just wanted to thank you - both Cecilia and also SBSK - for making this video and really working to take down barriers and disrupt very detrimental attitudes and beliefs around psychosis and specifically schizophrenia (which has quite the reputation). This was really an eye opener for me, and I can see beliefs of my own that were detrimental and incorrect. I also realized that if I myself had schizophrenia, I, too, would be looking for this exact type of hope, validation, and inclusion. I'm so glad that this group exists in the world. ;)

The video with Cecilia from 2017 was the first SBSK video I watched about three years ago. It's what got me into this channel and it feels so good coming back here and seeing her turn her life around. It's such an amazing thing she's doing, it's so important that people struggling with issues like that never feel alone and excluded. God bless!

It made me so happy hearing this update from Cecilia! I remember her from her TED talk as well as her first interview on this channel, and I was just as in awe of her then as I am now. Studying astrophysics, living with schizophrenia and autism in a neurotypical world, advocating for others and yourself in the face of stigma and misunderstanding - all of these are hard enough on their own, and she is out here doing all three. I'm so glad to see it.

This is definitely my favorite SBSK interview. Cecelia has and is accomplishing so much! She rose above the nay-sayers! At first I began to write: How dare the naysayers… then I realized I was being judgmental as well. That being said, I had tears in my eyes during the story and song from the beautiful red headed Dad. What a strong man to stare into the faces of his demons and tell them he is not submitting. I want to hug all of you and thank you for being awesome and encouraging people to be themselves and become comfortable with sharing their lives to educate the general population about mental illness. I have worked in Occupational Therapy for over 24 years and I have met some of the most intelligent, open minded and fascinating people on locked wards. It’s so important for all of us as human beings to understand, accept and love one another. Thank you. Good luck and Godspeed.
