As James and Jennifer Crumbley awaited sentencing for their conviction for involuntary manslaughter, both sought to avoid jail.
Their son Ethan Crumbley is serving life in prison for the school rampage where four were killed and seven others were injured. The gun used was given to the teen as a birthday present by his parents. James, convicted of involuntary manslaughter, asked the judge for "time served" and Jennifer asked the judge to let her serve her time on house arrest in a guest house at her attorney's home.
Oakland County Prosecutor Marc Keast has recommended 10-to-15-year jail sentences for both Jennifer and her husband, James. While James was in jail, damning phone conversations surfaced in which Crumbley had allegedly threatened Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald.
In a call from October 9, 2023, five months before the trial, Crumbley says, “Yeah, Karen McDonald, you’re going down. … Go ahead, record this call. Send it to Karen McDonald. Tell her how James Crumbley is going to f------ take her down."
In a call on December 23, 2023, Crumbley says “There will be retribution, believe me." The threats were bad enough that Crumbley's jail communication privileges were revoked during his trial. Neither received the sentence they asked for.

But what would they have been sending him away to? His parents still wouldn't have bothered about him but he would have had a gun and presumeably found other victims. From watching the trial it seems as though the school counsellor asked if they could do anything more and was told no. I also got the impression that they had the belief that Ethan was more likely to do harm to himself as they clearly recognised he needed intervention. If the parents had said he had access to a gun then maybe the school would have had more cause to act - and certainly every reason to report. I'm not excusing the school - just pointing out that that they weren't armed with all the knowledge the parents had.

This case is different. That's why the parents are being held accountable, unlike the others. Actually great parents have raised murderers, terrible parents have raised great humanitarians. But these were intentional acts of gross negligence to a child that is showing severe signs of mental illness, and instead buying him a killing machine and teaching him how to use it. Then they left out for him. You have to try pretty hard to be as grossly negligent as Ethan's parents. This isn't your regular 'neglectful parent.' As a gun owner, I agree in this case the parents were negligent with their son and the safety and responsibility of owning a firearm. There has to be a line drawn, though. I don't believe every parent should be charged for their child's crimes unless the parents are negligent. Prayers to all the families who suffered because of this. Truly tragic.

As a parent you don't buy a Teenager a HandGun, PERIOD!!! You don't go hunting with a HandGun. They Still Don't Get It. For those that are parents, think the schools are responsible for your children, You're the Problem.

They received the max 10-15 years which under Michigan law means they must serve at least a minimum 10 years before they are eligible for parole. If they don’t make parole after 10 years, they must serve the remaining 5 years. Given they’ve already served 2 years in jail, the minimum they will serve is 8 years.

it's amazing how many people just forget about the black mother(Deja Taylor) jailed for her child shooting a teacher.. everyone demanded she be jailed( but in this case MANY talked about the "slippery sloop"), so glad the book was throw at these two!! IMO Deja got off easy(thank god no one was killed), but lets be real this isn't the first time a parent was held responsible for their child committing a crime. If your underage child commits a crime that results in the death of another person DAMN RIGHT parents should be investigated (parents are and should be held responsible for their children, PERIOD!!!)

I 1000% agree, I am really upset with certain incidents such as this that are happening with kids this age and everyone wanting to put blame on that child first. Here's the thing, if all he knows everyday is that both parents didn't get along, one was cheating, one was an alcoholic, one cared about her "horses" more than anything, one ignored every cry for help from her child, she just didn't care. Then that child is going to assume that no one does care, and every and anything he does is going to be ok. Reality it just makes things worse than they ever need to be. The school hopefully, will be held responsible as well for their poor communication skills with him or his parents, or just in general the police. I'm sorry, I can't fathom everything. I'm not perfect but what I'm perfect at0 being the best Mom I can be, and if that's not being "best friends" with my kids, especially when children need guidance, protection and love.

Thank you, Nancy, for bringing this to our attention. The pain in the victim's mother's voice during her courtroom statement is palpable. It's disturbing to see how the perpetrator appeared mentally impaired, raising questions about why his parents allowed him access to a firearm. Their actions are bewildering, and they should face consequences alongside their son. Lauren's observation is spot-on; blaming the son while disregarding their own responsibility is unjust. The parents' negligence is appalling, as highlighted by Jarrot, the Pennsylvania homicide prosecutor. Just as they ignored their son's warning signs, they should not be shielded from accountability. The son orchestrated a shooting spree with chilling methodicalness, carrying out his plan to shoot and kill at the school. His actions revealed deeply disturbing homicidal intentions. Meanwhile, the mother was engaged in an affair while her son was seemingly consumed by a demonic influence. They ought to confine them together in a single cell and discard the key.
