Dark Matter is a theoretical form of invisible mass, which is believed to be present in galaxies, but has never been seen or detected. You've probably heard of it before, as it makes up a large part of the physics you find in textbooks. But how can something that's never been seen have so much scientific confidence? Furthermore, why can't we see dark matter to begin with? And if we can't see it, how do we know that it is really there? And if it's not there, what are the alternative ideas? These are the questions we will be aiming to answer, as we dive into the Dark Matter mystery.
The soundtrack was created by SpaceWave - Cosmic Relaxation.

@planescaped

A lot of the paid documentaries are over-produced, I guess in an effort to give people their money's worth. Instead they just become more boring and bloated than the stuff done by single individuals just trying to provide the information in an entertaining and informative manner. The paid ones have fancier graphics and expert testimonials, but it's often times more distracting than helpful/interesting.

I've opted out of a lot of my subscription services over the last year for the same reason. That said, what I've started doing is just donating small amounts of money to a few channels that I really like and that have genuine content creators that do it as a job. I think I've been giving SEA a few bucks a month for a year or so now, even though I don't have to to watch his stuff, but on the flip side I'd rather torrent a show than pay Netflix to watch it.

Dark matter and its discussion always seems to attract the crazies in some form or another. I think it's name has some role to play in that - it sounds vague, ominous and has scifi connotations. If it was called something less scary like non baryonic matter, it wouldn't get half the attention.
@randomcharacter6501
@randomcharacter6501 Рік тому
We only have indirect evidence of it's existence bc we don't have any instruments that can detect "non baryonic" matter. The example I always use is that early scientists believed that light could only travel through a medium. So to solve the problem of light traveling to us from the sun they came up with the non-dectectable aether. Which we now know is nonsense and light is free to travel in a vacuum, no medium needed. So to call people that question dark matter "crazies" is weird imo. Just because a bunch of smart people agree on something doesn't make it true. Dark matter may very well be some undiscovered property of space-time itself.
@diverguy3556
@diverguy3556 Рік тому
@@randomcharacter6501 I don't think I was clear enough about what I meant. I wasn't criticising people who question it, but rather the small but vocal bunch who use it as means of criticising astrophysics, or physics in general. The types who accuse scientists of making stuff up to paper over the cracks in their models, claim the scientific model is broken, or this is the last gasp of a fundamentally broken model etc

I think you have found a good cadence with your speech rhythm compared with some of your older videos where you sounded rushed. Good job man! Seriously brother, you're doing great work. I have a recommendation for a video by the way. The sleep time space narration genre is real and youtube monetizes premium subscribers per watch time so you could make a 3 to 4 hour video with the same background music style of the last 3 full length videos. I and probably many of your viewers/subscribers (going by the comment sections) would watch that one 3 hour video every night for months. And people who sleep with youtube on I would imagine are already Premium because ads are loud. Anyways love the content man, keep up the great work. Much love from America.

Thank you for the kind words, and also for the interesting recommendation. It’s a good idea but I don’t think I could handle 3-4 hour videos. Making a 40 min one is a pretty relentless task over a month from research to publishing. A 3-4 hour one would not only take months but it would probably kill me 😂 I have however been contemplating a kind of similar idea for a sub milestone, possibly 1M subscribers, which is basically a 6-part series of 40 min - 60 min videos uploaded at the same time. that will also take at least 3 months in itself

I wonder if we can work out proper theories for quantum gravity will it shed some light on the dark matter mystery? Because for such a large quantity of missing mass you would think we would have more information on it. I really think quantum gravity will open up the answer to this
@RexCalliber
@RexCalliber Рік тому
I agree. I’ve always thought the addition of X amount of dark matter to make the spin calculation add up always seemed a bit arbitrary. Watched a video lecture on quantised inertia a while back that seemed an interesting alternative tho it got tied to the debunked ‘M’ drive somehow losing it credibility. I’m guessing it’ll probably be several things working together & not just one particle.
@himynameis3664
@himynameis3664 Рік тому
@@RexCalliber Yeah this is my gut feeling too. It won't be solved by just discovering gravitons, or by gaining understanding of a new field equation. There are going to be multiple moving parts to this which may include a discovery of gravitons, but that will be working in tangent or alongside quantum gravity or like you said with that quantised inertia. I just have a real strong feeling it could have something to do with unifying the theories. "The Theory of Everything"

It's basically cosmic ash left over from the big bang. So chemically inert and lifeless that finding microscopic dark matter in the void of space ain't exactly easy. On a side note, I still like the theory that the big bang was a white hole, and the bigger more massive black holes lead to the formation of healthier new universes in a never-ending cycle of reality perpetuating itself. And the way everything in the universe seems to have a greater role and purpose in the grand scheme of things is quite fascinating. I always like it when the macroscopic nature of the universe mirrors the relative microscopic nature of life on a planet.
@himynameis3664
@himynameis3664 Рік тому
Always thought that white hole theory was really cool. I really do believe there are other universe's out there. Nothing we have ever observed has been singular in the universe, there's always multiples. So I just don't see why the universe itself wouldn't follow this rule.

I have always been skeptical of the dark matter idea. I feel my thinking will be proven correct in my lifetime. It’s a formulaic problem, not a missing variable one.
@mtb416
@mtb416 Рік тому
@Nad Senoj I don’t think there’s a missing variable at all. The current placeholder is a means to explain something missing in our formulas. I believe it’s a miscalculation of how the currently known forces interact, especially over vast expanses. I do not feel gravity is as constant as we currently believe it is; that in interstellar space the combination of gravity from distant galaxies combines and then creates a reversal of sorts, a repelling effect.

With scientists misintrepeting data about light, the nature of the universe's motion, and needing to invent a space fabric to address a failing on their part to correctly model the motion of more than two bodies and their orbits with newtonian equations, i am fairly certain they are vastly mistaken about dark matter.
@benghazi4216
@benghazi4216 Рік тому
All of those situations were from when the most powerful tool was a pen, paper and a human brain. But when we are playing around with tools like the LHC now, being vastly mistaken is less and less probable.

We’re always wrong as shit! Everyone that does science knows this. and that’s the fun of it! But you can’t do better than the best model. Wrong models can still be improved, and those newer models are still wrong but also better. Such is the process of science
@patryn36
@patryn36 Рік тому
@@benghazi4216 as an example since you mentioned lhc, they can not figure out where the antimatter is, where it went since the start of the universe. Funny thing is that they are making antimatter there at the lhc, the sun makes it, lightning makes it, and it is one decay product of certain radioactive elements. That means the antimatter and regular matter are made from the same building blocks, only functional difference between the two is the binding charges. I figured that out, why can they not? Other areas are like that, so much for the so callled experts if you stop and think about it.
