The shaft was pulled out with a rock drill without fixing the workpiece, and the ground was sand for handling bearings. There are plenty of other things to be picky about. What is safety awareness? Next time, try a much bigger gasnozzle. Like 2" wide. This cutting torch won't make a difference on that piece of steel. It's warming up to slow, so the axle is warming up, too. That's a lose-lose situation. You already got the gas and the oxygen. So that's the only thing you need. No matter how stuck it is, it will get loose. You will save your shoulders and back for sure.

You are right, they need bigger touches, BUT YOU ALWAYS START HEATING FROM THE OUTSIDE OF THE PULLY, LET THE HEAT GET TO THE MIDDLE, KEEP THE SHAFT COOL WITH A LITTLE WATER, A strong Back and a 50 Ton jack loading ,keep going round and round the outside,by the time it hits the shaft it,ll just pop off and the shaft, I,ve done a few bigguns, India, and the far East still use the old MANGLES, BUT THEY ALSO HAVE SOME UP TO DATE GEAR, BUT SO DID THE DOCKYARD IN THE 50,S UK,
@frankwells8204

The SHAFT WILL BE A BIT HOT, BUT NOT ENOUGH TO STOP IT, THE OUTSIDE WILL BE TEN TIMES HOTTER, ITS A BIT HARDER WHEN YOU START SHRINKING IT BACK ON,

Iron oxide melts and turns liquid at a much lower temperature than steel. Iron oxide is what was bonding the pulley wheel to the shaft. So yes, ditch that puny cutting torch and get several 2" heating torches, we call them tiger torches. Heat the pulley and shaft to red hot. Hoard the heat it in with fire brick or sheets of scrap tin to heat faster and conserve fuel. When the shaft and pulley are red hot the oxides between the pulley and shaft will be liquid and will actually be a lubricant which will allow the pulley to slide off MUCH easier.

@rharris22222
@rharris22222 Рік тому
No, it has been proven time and time again, not only by experience in loosening stuck stuff, but also by actually measuring holes in heated plates. The hole gets bigger. Also, the heating and cooling helps to draw the penetrating oil into the crack. And finally, it is also understandable by analyzing the physics and geometry. Then the immediate area is heated, the metal expands in all directions and the expansion in the direction around the circumference of the rim causes the hole to expand. Again, not just theory. Measured result.
