If you're a Garmin user with an ANT+ Radar device, this ConenctIQ data field is something you'll want to know about. It'll record vehicle speeds, passing locations, and even keep count of how many vehicles have passed on a ride. This information can be viewed after your ride in Garmin Connect (Web or Mobile) and over on the MyBikeTraffic website if you upload the activity there.

I've also been using this for quite some time, and it's incredibly useful. We even used it in a case with an expert witness who was testifying in a motorist-vs-cyclist crash/lawsuit. We were able to prove that the cyclist had stopped at the STOP sign, and then, realizing he'd made a wrong turn, had legally moved into the left lane to effect a U-turn when struck. The absolute speed for the motorist? 55mph in a 35mph zone. Case was settled very quickly after that. These radars will NOT improve your safety. They'll improve your AWARENESS and they will BUY YOU TIME. TIME to make choices. 12 Seconds is about what you get, which is usually 6 more than you get via ears alone. Oh how I wish Garmin still sold their HUD.

Great content. I’ve had it on my Garmin for a while. Super useful information. Also, occasionally gets in trouble because my wife now asks me, “How many cars passed you today?” and I can no longer just say, “Oh, a few here and there.” I had 710 pass me on a 120k route the other day. It makes gravel all that more appealing.
@gplama
@gplama Рік тому
The total number can sometimes be an eye opener. I had a similar thought the other day with 80 or so passes.... and thinking it only takes one of those on their phone or not paying attention to be in a pretty bad situation. And yes... gravel rides are brilliant. It's nice seeing no cars for over an hour at a time! But when one does come along on the noisey gravel road, you'll get a *beep beep* from the bike computer/app before hearing them.

Though I remain very defensive in dealing with vehicles that I share the road with, the added information that the radar provides has given me the opportunity to enjoy the scenery a lot more. Very good content, thank you. I downloaded the app from the Connect IQ store to install on my Edge 530, and here are my first impressions: I included 3 data fields: vehicle count, absolute speed, and last vehicle speed. With the 7-screen display, the data is too small to read during a ride. I will have to create a dedicated data screen for it to be useful. The data on Garmin Connect is great. You get vehicle count, and a vehicle speed graph over time. I have not been able to find the file to upload on the my bike traffic website. I presume I need to use my computer and plug in my Edge device for that. Overall a great add on. Just need to tweak and play around with it a little more.

I think the "why bother, it's might not be valid in a court of law" argument is moot.... much like arguing against using camera footage. In the US, there are some jurisdictions that will not accept video footage, but more and more that do. I think it will be similar here. But either way I believe it would be very helpful if you had this data when working with police... the more data you have to support your case, the better. I also suspect as this becomes more common, drivers will adjust their behavior. If they know that their speed is being recorded, and often that they are being filmed, they might actually start to be more considerate. And thanks for another excellent video.

Shane - your suggestion @ 9:20 is exactly how I use this data - by checking traffic flow and speed on alternative route options I can see the number of cars and average passing speed - - this in turn, for example, can give me the information to decide if that road that runs parallel to my prescribed or regular route 2 streets over ( in my urban setting here in Japan ) is safer or busier... Interestingly, I sometimes find that roads with more passing traffic have a lesser relative speed - although that doesn't always equate to "safer".... You're in a more rural setting but I wonder what are your experiences in this regard......................

Thanks for the video. I downloaded the data field and just went for a ride with the garmin 520 plus and the RTL510. The app is not perfect at counting cars. Often when I had a car behind following at my speed it could count the car several times before it even passed. Also occasionally it failed to count a passing car. Id guess that as the vehicle settles at your speed behind, it disappears off the radar until it speeds up and gets detected again, the app counts this as an overtake. If the vehicle repeatedly speeds up and slows down before actually overtaking, 1 car could count several times. Not a fault of the garmin radar I should say. As usual it never failed to detect a car coming up behind - so great! exactly what I want of my radar. Just not so good at working with the app to count the amount of cars that actually passed me.

But can you ask Shockz about the plastic coating on the inside of the bone conduction units? Mine have fallen off twice! Admittedly, the first time it happened was just inside the 1-Year warranty window, and the local agent in Hong Kong replaced them with a new set with no hassles at all. But, the covering fell off the new ones inside of 2 months. It hasn't affected the audio as I can tell, and the headphone still stay in place. It's just annoying. I wonder if this is a common problem for Shockz users. I'd love to hear from other channel subscribers about their experience. That said, Shocks are hands-down the best sports headphones I've ever had. You can't beat them for comfort. And they don't die when you sweat them up on a hot and humid day. Shawn, off topic. New subscriber. I've watched some of your vids already. Great unbaised stuff Mate! Question . . . I upgraded from the Bosch Smart Hub to the Bosch Nyon a few days ago. I'm ordering the Varia 515. But the Nyon does not support radar. I'm trying to get away from using my iphone on my handle bars (I will until I get a 2nd computer). Nyon nav is hard for me to read. Do you think the Garmin 830 is a good way to go (mostly for the radar and some nav)? I need the Nyon to operate my Trek 2022 Powerfly ebike a FS9 Equipped. I'm 73 and I think the 530 will be too small for my old eyes? Thx

The 530/830 are a very small for navigation. The 1030/1040 series have a much better screen for data and mapping. Those are my go-to units if I'm out riding with Garmin GPS.

Hi Shane, Great Video!! Can you tell me what the defaults on the Set-Up as it relates to MPG or KPH. Thanks, Too

I think it's set to whatever the units are on the device.

Omg I've dreamed of this, no reason to have radar and not know vehicle speed.

Could you mount the Varia upfront (with the light off obviously), to record speed from vehicles approaching you? Along with the camera you have a pretty good dashcam at that point.

The ARadar app does the same on the Apple Watch and collecting stats on iOS.

Shane maybe Shockz could send you the new Roadwave for review: they have the bone conduction integrated into a pair of sunglasses. They are less fiddly than having separate sunglasses and headphones. They don't have much choice of lenses (right now). I have both and they sound great

Thanks to this channel I started using this setup for my last two rides. In a 25mph zone a maniac passed me at 70mph! Sobering to look at live and after I uploaded my ride and showed my wife the next day I was still thinking about it. Maybe tmi? Won’t ride my road bike without it from now on.

So what? You needed a useless piece of technology to tell you that cars pass you in excess of the speed limit?

@@ashleyhouse9690 Why did you bother to watch the video? This technology is far from useless.

Yeah I kinda think its a great thing, wrote to the website owner and asked a couple of questions and hew responded as below... Hello; Been using your website for a bit and have a couple of questions and maybe a suggestion. I have a Edge 1030+ and 520+ I've noticed they are both picking up vehicles perpendicular (at least very close) as far as 5 lanes (100 ft or so) away. Does the fit file also contain sufficient info to tell how far to the left (in USA) the auto is? If so can this be added to the info for the rides? Which brings the other question, what are the data fields for the Fit file?? Have you been approached by Strava, Google, Apple, Garmin etc to farm out this info. It seems to me this would be very valuable info for some of these sites as they are starting to beef up the biking info and the data could provide basically live radar speed info for stretches of road (the DOTs may like this info as well and of course the cops). This could be correlated to accident and injury events and provide the most dangerous stretches of road etc (as well as safer, I think it was Outside that was tracking bike vehicles collisions and deaths). If the Fit file can determine how far to the left or right a car is 3 feet is the law here (NV) this may also be informative. Some reviews of the varia kinda poo poo it, but if the data can be expanded and become integrated into websites, that alone makes getting a radar unit valuable in and of itself. Hi, Thanks for the inquiries. I’m working on a separate project that can detect lateral distance similar to what you are asking, but it’s a separate hardware product using LIDAR that I’m trying to hack together separate from the Varia. Currently, the Garmin Varia doesn’t report anything other than speed and distance for each car and whether it’s on the left or right. It doesn’t report the angle or any other information you would need to determine what you are asking. It’s possible the Varia already determines this information but doesn’t report it to Connect IQ, in which case they may release a firmware update that would make this info accessible. Lastly, for my current connect IQ app, I created several custom FIT fields that are stored in the FIT file for each ride as documented below: RECORD MESSAGES (i.e., stored every second): radar_ranges … array of eight signed 2 byte integers (should be all lowercase, not sure if that matters for WKO5) radar_speeds … array of eight unsigned 1 byte integers (also lowercase) radar_current … unsigned 2 byte integer passing_speed … unsigned 1 byte integer passing_speedabs … unsigned 1 byte integer So in general I think it has great potential to be quite useful for at least the following Passing distance data Speed in known speed limit area (particularly if exceeded consistently Correlated to high accident areas (and the opposite safer areas) Integration into Google Maps or Komoot (and others) when route planning to determine safer rides Little radar units all over the world, on a practically live basis, the more the better correlate fatalities with data (/www.advocacyadvance.org) Help to improve cycling and pedestrian safety by DOTs, seems to me the DOTs and Law Enforcement would be interested in this data as well And I dunno a bunch more stuff

Thanks as always Shane. No Wahoo support 🥺. This looks awesome, but do I really want a new head unit to use it?
