STRAVA Heatmaps Updated to show Gravel and MTB Maps!

Strava have recently updated their Global and Personal Heatmap feature to allow users to select the specific sport/activity to show. For cyclists this makes planning your next gravel or MTB a whole lot easier, especially if you're travelling.

Thanks for the darkmode tip. I'd like to add an observation: At least In my area, literally all known gravel/mtb routes are only visible under "all rides". Filtering for Gravel or MTB is therefore may not always a good idea. I assume most people (including me) use some bike computer that auto-uploads activity under the general ride category.

How about a video on the removal of the Explore option and being replaced with the new Search option? We seem to have lost Segment Explore which I used quite often.

As a Rouvy user, for me the personal virtual ride heatmap is a game changer! I've lamented for a ling time that I can't see a history of where I have ridden on the trainer, to create a sort of bucket list of rides to target in real life after retirement. Fantastic to see, though I understand that is less useful for the Zwift users, whose routes I understand are more divorced from actual geographic locations).

its a nice feature, but I'm kind of confused why its not part of router planner (yet). Isn't that by far the most obvious/relevant use case? Why would I just look for other peoples routes, when I'm not about to plan my own? Switching back and forth between global gravel heatmap and router planner, definitely far from ideal

I love that you just did the route for the Race to the Sun event (that ends in Sun City) that will also be our National Gravel championship (I would strongly advise against riding the route alone outside of the race though)

@@Xhadp Apparently it's not safe that side. I was over there a couple weeks ago for a few days with the family and was told not to go ride the course on my own, so I'll discover it in 3weeks time during the race... I come from Cape Town, here we can pretty much ride anywhere we want to, but Johannesburg side is a bit wild :(

Great feature, even with the risk of time wasting checking out different regions of the world! Bad GPS recording on the route up the Stelvio from Bormio is the only reason why I got a KOM there 😂

Haha, I just had to check out Vanikoro! 🤣 And one day I'll have to find out if you can actually ride a bike there, or just ride virtually. 🙂 That said, considering how often I do pure road rides on my gravel bike, I'm not sure how much I'd trust that a ride marked as a gravel ride is really a gravel ride, if activityfix sets the ride type based on bike choice. :)

Am curious, have you ever taken a bike over to New Zealand to ride? Am thinning for Australia visiting New Zealand for a long weekend is common.

@gplama Thanks for the video! How close are you to releasing the 4iiii Precision 3+ Pro review? For those of us who are about to pull the trigger on a new Shimano crankset this may be the best/only crank-based power meter option. DC reviewed it as you know and found it to be very accurate and without issues. You mentioned in a video about a month ago that you had some issues with yours. Are they fixable through firmware updates or is it hardware-related? This can help me decide whether to go for them now or not. Thank you again!

The Dual is still not a meter I can reliably use. I have a number of issues with both the Dual and the single sided GRX (same P3 sensor) that I’ll need a response from 4iiii on. (The latest issue being false cadence readings when coasting on rougher roads resulting in phantom power spikes).

The downside is when someone rides 40km on road to do a 10km gravel section and then classes it as a gravel ride because it was on their gravel bike. Then we see major roads coming up a gravel sections.

Now I'm wondering what virtual riding is being done for some of these heat trails all over. Some are obvious for Zwift, but there's some long trails through North America I don't recognize.

That 160km Jhb route is the "Race to the Sun" route. South Africa's Gravel Bike National Championship for 2024.

I obviously need to get a more powerful computer. Zooming in/out and panning is very choppy for me. I do like this feature though.

How do they know what rides are "gravel" rides? eg I dont bother with different equipment on my strava rides

Either with your head unit correctly set with the ride/ride profile, you manually setting the ride type, or you using a third party tool to properly categorise your ride. If none of those take place it'll default to 'ride'.

For your personal heatmaps, sure. If the rides are more than 13 months old they won’t show in the global heatmap.

1 issue with this, if the activity type was not a gravel ride, then it won't count into the gravel category (?), in lots of cases when somebody does a gravel ride, they upload the activity as just a normal ride, at least in my experience

True. I also ride my gravel bike on the road quite a bit - as the potholes are so bad! - so these (road) rides will show as gravel rides. The data isn't perfect by any means.

Need an option to filter out data points on a road. Show me the off-road gravel trails, not the road routes between them that people rode a gravel bike on.

Just tried this in Aix Les Bain France, and the data is terrible; it's MTB or road, and a ton of road rides are actually gravel. oh well.

They really need to unleash some AI or machine learning on their data for heatmaps. Due to the popularity of cycling in large groups and communiting by bike here, the heat maps are totally useless for a single rider. They are basically just road hierarchy maps showing large dangerous roads with bad bicycle paths as popular because large groups ride on the road and communters use wide tires and want to take the shortest route.
