Steve’s point about the Chiefs receivers only running deep crossers and bombs was interesting. Made me think about how other coordinators around the league might have boxed Mahomes into a more traditional West Coast system rather than taking advantage of his gifted arm. Andy Reid brought in a bunch of pass catchers with speed and told Mahomes to throw it as far as he can so they can go get it. As long as Reid is there I don’t see them changing anything but after he’s gone I’m interested to see if the Chiefs bring in the technician receivers Steve is talking about and try him in a new system.

i love how in the first man coverage example, despite the LB playing it perfectly, that shouldve been a TD. it was a perfectly thrown ball to the back of the end zone, the receiver just dropped it. so even if youre perfect, you really cant win on defense against a good offense without them messing up.

I'm no football expert but I've been saying this since Andy reid coached the eagles . He always had a super fast receiver and a QB with a very strong arm. Mahomes is the most talented of them all but he had Donovan McNabb Michael Vick Nick foles Alex Smith ( decent arm very accurate ) Now pat mahomes DeSean Jackson Tyreek Hill None has great route runners They just super fast guys with good hands They not running routes they only running deep or to a certain spot. Reid is a genius and one of the better coaches the league has seen.

I know this was last year, but I think the Reid was just surprised by all the man coverage the Colts were running. I watched the all-22 of this game and there were a few times that a couple of guys broke open, but the OL didn't let Mahomes get the ball out. Also, despite being covered pretty well, that first throw from Mahomes to #26 is PERFECT! A TD there changes the whole game.

Mahomes definitely struggled, but you could tell his ankle was already fucked up because he wasn’t escaping and moving like his usual self, and he got a clear directly to his hurt ankle in the second half, and after that his movement looked like not even a shell of what we are used to see from him. The tackles have had poor performances before where Mahomes has been so good he could hide their deficiencies, but it caught up to him versus the Colts.

I half agree with Ray-Ray. The Chiefs can't hold up against 4-man rush. Mahomes outside the pocket is deadly, though. The point is that they're dialing up really lazy route combos, based on speed. I think Mahomes would be fantastic working a ball-control passing game. To put it in Walsh terms: Yeah, you've got a great overhand right, but you gotta set up the knockout with a lot of jabs. Chain-moving jabs. Drive the opponent crazy jabs.
