#Stayathome
Hello folks!
Welcome back to What’s For Tea :) So today I made Panacketly in the slow cooker :) Layers of sliced potato, onion, pork sausage and corned beef…in a delicious beef & tomato gravy!
I’d never heard of Panackelty (also known as Pan Haggerty) before but apparently it’s very popular and well loved in the North-East of England. I’ve seen a few different variations of this recipe!, and some use bacon instead of sausage. I had sausages that I needed to use up, so I’ve used them.
I was first made aware of the recipe from KeefCooks channel and went on to look at other recipes :) I’ve combined a couple of different recipes to make it how I though we, as a family would enjoy it. KeefCooks Panackelty video: • Panackelty | Pan Hagge...
Everything I used will be mentioned below incase you want to make it for yourself. Thanks for stopping by,
-Cheryl x
____________________________________________________________________
What I used (serves 4-5)
1kg (2.5lb) Peeled, washed & thickly sliced white potatoes (I used rooster potatoes)
1 Medium onion-sliced
400g (14oz) standard can chopped tomatoes
340g (12oz) Standard can of corned beef, thickly sliced
400g (1lb) Pork sasauges
300ml (10floz) Beef stock (I used 2 OXO cubes)
3 Teaspoons cornflour/cornstarch
3 Tablespoons water
A little oil for frying

Morning folks :) I've had quite a few folk asking if the crock pot insert is safe to put in the oven...so I've taken the following from the Crock Pot website. *All Crock-Pot® Slow Cooker removable crockery inserts (without lid) may be used safely in the microwave and the oven set up to 400°F* If you own another slow cooker brand, please refer to your owner's manual for specific crockery cooking medium tolerances.

Hi Cheryl, I’m from the north east and panackelty is a firm favourite here. Each family seem to have their own twist on the recipe and it’s really easily adapted . I use either sausage or bacon and always add a few carrots . It always tastes better the next day too 😋 Hope you and your family are keeping yourselves safe during these uncertain times .

Browning the meats as well as veggies (when applicable) adds more than color .. the browning, Caramelization .. is flavor ... I would NOT skip the browning step .. : ] This does look totally yummie !

This reminded me of the way my mother use to cook lamb shoulder chops or cheaper cuts of beef. She’d brown the meat in butter, then layer it in a deep roasting dish. Where you’ve got the corned beef and sausages Ma would have the chops or steaks. Covered with foil and cooked slowly in the oven. Or if we were away from home, mustering or droving cattle, Ma would cook it in a camp-oven on a bed of charcoal from the camp fire. Thanks for reminding me. I just love your recipes. 💛

My dear old mum used to make this but her method was much more basic. She originated fron Durham and we had panackelty all the time. Her method was simply a very thin broth with onions and corned beef with chopped potatoes. No gravy or stock but it was delicious and we ate it with a ton of bread. Fed a family of seven very cheaply. I have this in the slow cooker right now and it smells wonderful !

I still make it now, it’s sooooooo delish and full of memories of my childhood (my parents came from Sunderland, although my family came from Scotland, I am fifth generation English), so we were raised on a mix of Scottish and English foods and traditions). My parents have been gone a long time now, that’s why dishes like this are so important to us, they help to keep the memories alive. Hi there. I'm still a new subber. I've seen about a dozen of your videos now. I served steak pie to my family last night. They loved it! Thanks. It's a new 'old' favorite of ours now. I'll be serving it again and again. I like the colorful names of some of the dishes and 'Panackelty' is a great sounding name. I'll probably try this one at some point - in a casserole, as I've stored my slow cooker away while my 70 yr old kitchen has new flooring put in. Here's a suggestion about the beans you served on the side of your Panackelty. We all used tins of beans, of course, but if you saute onions, crisp up bacon and add sausage meat (maybe a little bit of tomato paste), then even tinned beans will taste the way they're supposed to. :)
