Apple is officially 1 generation behind in GPU performance while they are now on equal field in CPU performance. The Bionic design was probably 2 generations ahead back in 2017. Now that's no longer the case! This means the era of the Bionic should end! Apple needs new design if they want to remain competitive. On the plus side if we look at the naming Apple is most likely planning a replacement for the Bionic or a big increase. When it comes to chips when there is a "Pro" there is also a "Max". There might be an A-series Max version of the SoC coming next year. They really need that. Qualcomm is on a row right now! They are at a point where custom cores are right around the corner.

What makes this a great chip is the fact that Qualcomm was able to achieve while being on a 4nm node while apple is on 3nm. I had an S10e (loved the form factor), but a year into owning it the battery swelled. My wife was going in for surgery, a spinal fusion, the very next day. I didn't have time to fix the S10e so I went to my local phone store and paid waaay too much for an S20FE. I did like the 120hz screen, but a lot about the phone I didn't like. That's been over 2 years now, and seeing that I can get the S24 in yellow and all the specs are improved I've decided it's time for an upgrade. I like that the S24 has a much brighter screen, I sadly have to use my phone at work and so a bright screen that'll work outside in direct sunlight is going to be a huge plus. Add the 4nm chipset of this gen 2 Snapdragon, 50% larger vapor chamber for the heatsink, I'm hoping the phone will be better suited to me using outside on hot summer days. The S20FE was fairly dim and would be on FIRE in August where I live (Florida). Thanks for the video mate, pretty hard to find info right now and you made it clear and concise, I like it!

@GaryExplains
@GaryExplains 6 місяців тому
I have several videos on this, I would suggest you take a look at my RISC-V playlist. In summary, the only thing free about RISC-V is the specification. To actually design a chip still costs millions and the royalty fees are tiny in comparison. SiFive and Imagination actually have the same business model as Arm, they design the CPU cores and then license them to other to make chips. Nothing changes with RISC-V, it is mainly a way to give communists and dictators a way to make processors and bypass the West.

Awesome video, as always. But, at some pont, the battle for "highest performing chipset" becomes pointless. I am not saying they should not keep innovating, but bragging about "high scores" doesn't necessarily translate to better real life changes. Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and it's counterparts are more than enough, what I would like to see is innovations in battery technology (high density, long-life) and better thermals. If we keep this trend of prioritizing high scores then we are encouraging manufactures to keep focusing on that (they supply what we demand) while innovations on other areas of technology lag behind.

Using the neural engine it does appear that many games are now blending CPU and GPU cores to get a better optimised experience. Looking at the SD8G3 GPU, I cannot imagine that extra performance will be useful for long as it is bound to heat saturate the phones and lead to heavy thermal throttling. So optimisation, optimisation…

When you build an efficient building, that's the WHOLE PROJECT what matters the most, not the size of the BRICKS building it TSMC doesn't design SOCs, it is just a FOUNDRY for those projects. It only builds them. Size doesn't always matter... "It's not about the size of the boat, it's the motion of the ocean" The latest Hi Silicon Kirin 9000s was built within 7nm blocks by SMIC. The 3nm A17 doesn't gather as much attention as the one given to its Chinese counterpart.

Looks like they will finally pretty much close the gap and possibly tie or be close to a18 single core with Oryon in 8 gen 4 if they can clock it high in phones I'm assuming 3nm capacity will be available by then so it might have the headroom to push the clocks like Apple are doing also expecting it to improve the power efficiency especially if they have also made some efficiency cores cos the arm e cores are trash

@michaeldendulk9225
@michaeldendulk9225 6 місяців тому
Apple's cores have always been better. To be fair, the main thing we can take away from this is that it's time for Apple to step away from their 6-core design and join the rest of the world with 8+ cores. Not even going to look at the synthetic GPU benchmarks, as they can't be compared fairly, they use completely different API's. Even the benchmarking tools themselves say not to use them to compare Apple to SD/Mediatek/Exynos one on one. Benchmarks from specific games would be far more useful. Still, the 8 gen 3 is a fine piece of engineering, looks very impressive.
@sbrader97
@sbrader97 6 місяців тому
Because the stock arm cortex designs suck apple uses a lot of cache in there design much better CPU architecture and is able to clock much higher. The custom Oryon cores in the X elite laptop chip has caught up to Apple it scored 3227 single core according to qualcomms numbers so when that comes to mobile in 8 gen 4 it will likely be comparable or much closer to a18 single core I doubt it will beat it yet unless 3nm allows it to clock even higher or if they make improvements to it for 8 gen 4 and not using the exact same core that's in the X elite
@andyH_England
@andyH_England 6 місяців тому
They are superior designs which Apple has patented. Qualcomm cannot come close ATM and have to ramp up the number of cores to make it not look so bad. Orion may change the game as Qualcomm bought in exchange for-Apple designers to use their knowledge to bypass Apple’s patents. They had to do it as their own team had spent a decade playing catchup and not really making much CPU headway.
@sbrader97
@sbrader97 6 місяців тому
@@andyH_England Well it's not only about the patents it was because Qualcomm only using stock arm cortex cores so they brought Nuvia to finally bring out custom arm cores the results of Oryon in X elite look promising the issue with the cortex cores is they don't have much cache and then conversely the other elements of the architecture can't be as good without the cache there to feed it because the arm designed cores favours die size over absolute performance they also clock worse the X elite is upto 4.2ghz albeit in laptops but with the previous laptop chip 8cx gen 3 it was only able to do 3ghz
@andyH_England

@@sbrader97 I am surprised we still have to wait 9 months and am not sure why there was a delay? I thought it was due to the ARM legal case, but that is due in September and may take some months. Maybe they have not been sure they will win the case and are therefore biding their time to decide whether to delay further. Also, they have to indemnify PC OEMs against losing the case, so I do not expect Apple to be worrying too much especially with the M3 arriving soon which is rumoured to be a two-gen upgrade in performance due to better stacked chips and more cores.

The sad reality is that game developers will still favor Apple in the US. There is no reason the current Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 phones are not outperforming the Iphone 14 pro Max, other than game developers make all the games CPU dominant since the Iphones have always had shot GPU's, therefore making games less optimal than they should be. Look at the current performance of IOS vs Android in the Warzone Mobile closed play tests.
