the vapor cone has nothing to do with the sound barrier. thank u nsf for ur misinformative video...
@NASASpaceflight
@NASASpaceflight 6 днів тому
On rockets, the vapor cone typically appears in the transonic regime, where the proper conditions exist for its formation (dense, moist air and high speed as the video states). This is almost why the video specifically says "near the sound barrier" and doesn't say the vapor cone is caused by breaking the sound barrier. Sincerely- The guy who sent the video back for accuracy edits before it was released. (Das)

@@NASASpaceflight For aircrafts Vapor Cones can apear at any speeds even at subsonic speeds with the right conditions (enough pressure difference, condentation of air, etc). But my apologies, I didn't think about rockets. I think rockets they are build to have air longer attached to the body so it can have lower pressure difference so they have much much less air condentation and so much much less Vapor Cones at subsonic speeds. Am I right? If not, please correct me.
@kanalkanali
@kanalkanali 6 днів тому
and i mean with pressure difference the pressure difference of the disattached air...
@NASASpaceflight
@NASASpaceflight 6 днів тому
Aircraft use their aerodynamics to change attitude quite often... which can result is much greater pressure differentials (and create the conditions for vapor condensation is drastically different situations). It's correct that aircraft can create the visual vapors over a much larger range of speeds) Rockets are generally not using their wings to do high-g turns at low altitudes... they want to be as aerodynamic as possible to get out of the thicker atmosphere efficiently... so the most likely situation you see the cone is right as its going transonic (and generally, right behind the fairing, more likely to create a pressure differential than the flat rocket body side. That's where you generally see it. Should likely do an explainer short on how it works. Cheers! Das
