Ive changed backlight on an old synthesizer I had. Its probably like mine, glued on, so that is why twisting it fixes the problem. (the backlight probably presses against the screen, and the glue sticks on it).

I got mine on Monday and it looked like it was brand new and has worked perfectly. It would have been nice to see you go through the warranty process just to see if Valve took care of the issue for you. My only concern is that Valve could potentially be a little more stingy with warranty claims on the refurbished units

The buttons not working during the setup is normal if it comes with an old version of the installer. p.p.s you DONT have to cut the shield on the ssd, you can open it on the other side to make it a little bit larger (i did it on my 64 GB model since the new ssd was a bith thicker).

I got a brand new 64GB Steam Deck on the recent Steam Summer Sale and it also had this same kind of light bleed in the top left corner. After some looking around I came to the same conclusion as you, a little flex and screw loosening drastically reduces the severity of the light bleed. I thought of sending it back to Valve but I also heard that they have stopped accepting RMAs for light bleed except on very severe cases. They say light bleed like this is normal and unavoidable with this type of screen but if it's really bad to the point where it hurts the experience they'll fix it.
@drawfull
@drawfull 8 місяців тому
Not being a twat, but there were so many posts at launch with people in a dark room, with the deck on a black screen moaning about bleed. To be fair to valve - as you kinda said - they would replace if it was noticeable in gaming use, and it doesn't seem like that their policy has changed. I genuinely don't get this video's crits. Shrug.
@Artificial.Unintelligence

Light bleed on screens: Tons of handhelds (the bigger the screen the more prevalent) including the switch and tons of monitors have these 'hot spots' because of the way back lighting is done.. AND as bob eventually got to, pressure and twisting are a big issue; pinch your monitor slightly and it'll probably do the same and those don't need to be robust like a deck so it's less prevalent..
@Artificial.Unintelligence
@Artificial.Unintelligence 8 місяців тому
@@drawfullI think people just aren't used to game screens in the pitch dark... Even high end non-oled monitors do this.. the switch does this.. people expect perfect BLACK from a screen that was never going to be capable of it and valve never claimed it to be. People should be happy valve included such fine control for screen brightness because on many devices it's absolutely blinding to use.. ie phones or switch on an overnight flight..

The emulation capabilities tied with the fact that I've been getting more and more into indie gaming over the past couple of years is pointing me into that direction. Ive messed with about 9-10 decks at this point (from my personal one and RMAs, to friends consoles, etc.) and every single one of them had very noticeable backlight bleed. people will defend Valve saying its common in IPS displays but ive never seen it so common and noticeable in any other device. The controller buttons not working at bootup is most likely due to the drivers for the controller not bieng loaded at boot. It is a computer after all. When you turn your pc on the first thing it does is load a boot manager and then it runs a startup list for inputs like a mouse and keyboard. Thats why the controls didn't work until after the system was fully booted.

This is a backlight bleed issue, it's fairly common in displays in general. I had an issue with my Lenovo T580 screen and it's just from pressure being put unevenly on the panel. Refurbished stuff in general is always a bit of a dice roll. Some refurbs are nothing more than returns that just needed a little cleaning...and sometimes not even that. But others did need repairs, whether to physical damage or faulty board components. Sometimes this works out and it's good as new. Sometimes the damage led to things that can't be easily seen or won't show up at all until later (voltage spikes damaged other components but didn't kill them, screen was loosened but not enough that it was apparent before it was shipped again, etc.). There's a reason you pay less here--you're taking a risk, however small.

@@kuhpunkt Because folks that do refurbs aren't usually trying to hose the buyer. But if you're going to complain that you got unlucky and then instead of getting the warranty replacement just make a video about it, saying to avoid refurbs altogether...that's on you, honestly. You knew the risk, you knew what you had to do to mitigate it, you chose not to and to just complain instead.

@evan4686
@evan4686 8 місяців тому
@@matthewjbauer1990yeah because adding a wider variety of components to potentially go wrong in unique and unexpected ways is totally the way to go. they've designed the steam deck with a certain screen, so it'll be the one they are most comfortable shipping to consumers. this is an issue on all monitors using this display tech and is only exacerbated by the context the deck is used.

I've had multiple handhelds, and especially laptops, over the years that had that light bleed effect on the screen. I think it's caused by variance in the manufacturing tolerances of individual components. Using the twist method is probably ok as long as you're not really wrenching down on it. I think the plastic shell would start to crack and groan before the screen broke.

The case is likely refurbished too, as the newer cases I've been hearing don't come with the white strap to lift the deck out anymore as many people didn't know what it did without being told. Also, IIRC, you're supposed to put it in the case when RMA'ing a unit, so unless they received a damaged case it would probably be the one that came with that Deck originally. Most RMAs are going to be shortly after a person received a device, as that's when stuff is most likely to break from defects missed by QA, so that's why it looks new still.

Having reinstalled my Deck relatively recently following a drive upgrade: the Steam OS installer is a bit of a glitchy mess. It took half an hour to carefully replace the drive, and then a day to reinstall. I suspect the glitches get fixed and created on the regular so you get a different experience each time you do it; and it'd be tempting to attribute that to the unit when it's just errors that are low prioritized because they're only experienced by a minority of users as compared to, say, library browsing problems.

I had the exact same issue with my Steam Deck with Type B joysticks when I swapped the 64GB eMMC to a 1TB SSD. First boot and the buttons and joystick did not work (this was a frightening experience after just installing an SSD). But after initial setup and an update later the buttons and joystick worked great and have ever since.

My launch steam deck has had that light bleed issue, can I warranty it for that?
@chrislaustin
@chrislaustin 8 місяців тому
The light bleed issue I thought would have been addressed by now, as it is well known problem on retail units, so not specific to the refurbished models. I'm guessing it must only effect a small number of units, or the fix isn't easy, as otherwise I'm sure Valve would have fixed it by now. But as you stated one person didn't notice it, while another did, and I'm sure that's typical. I personally would notice that, but my 17 year old son would be oblivious to it and wouldn't care. I'm looking forward to another retail unit sale around the holidays, so I plan to get my unit then, and I might go for a refurbished one.(if available). As the light bleed is the only negative that would probably make me return it, as I plan to put a skin over it, so some nicks and dings isn't a big deal.

Steam decks are still not being sold by valve here in Mexico sadly, so the only option we have is third party resellers that markup the price by 60% or more... Considering my PC is 10 years old and I mostly play small indie games, a deck would legit be am upgrade for me, but sadly it doesn't seem I could get one any time soon

If twisting it fixes it that says to me it’s an issue with how the screens are stuck into the body maybe heating the screen adhesive up and twisting it a bit then letting it sit would permanently fix it

When I did a fresh install of SteamOS when installing a bigger SSD, none of the buttons worked until you hook up to wifi and let it do its update stuff and get to the point where you log into Steam. From there, all the buttons work like normal

So that screen issue is a very common one for screens, even happens to a lot of reputable monitor brands. And as others have mentioned, it happens even on the switch. It's not something that can really be fixed with IPS screens. They could use an OLED, but this would have increased the price more than most people would have likely been willing to pay. Another part of it is that Valve is sourcing their screens from one company, and that is because that was the only company that had screens in the exact size and resolution Valve needed for the SD. The button issue is like a SteamOS bug. For as good of a choice it was in using Linux, there are some downsides at times and that is likely one of them.

Got a brand new 64gb model recently and mine has this issue, I actually checked to make sure my package didn't say refurbished just in case but it didn't. Mine isn't as bad as the one shown, doesn't bother me too much as its not seen while playing games. Interesting though, don't think I accept it if it was a phone screen but yeah, screen type etc definitely make a difference.

I, too, bought a refurbished 64 GB one in the EU. From the outside it looked very good, the case was new, the charger was new, however - the “B”-Button wasn't working at all. Got an RMA Label from valve, so just after a day in my hands I had to return it. Not gonna mess with it since it has warranty. Now it's on its way to Prague. Let's see how it goes and how long it takes. Still, I'm wondering how something like this can slip through their “testing”? I mean, it wasn't a loose cable inside, it's clearly the daughter board.

I had the button issue when setting up my kid's SD for Xmas when I swapped the SSD. Also I ran into a SteamOS re-install issue where is would just throw up errors and listing a ton of "Failed" after initially saying "OK" to everything. Never happened with mine it took multiple hours to fix but I got it up and running and watching this video and seeing the light bleed I was like "uh his is brand new but lets see" and sure enough the top of the screen has it. I fixed it loosening slight the back screw by it. I have an original release SD and for some reason the the screw that goes through case into the shielding isn't tight it screws with the fan and temps (found that out after swapping my SSD). His is the black shielding SD I figured it needed to be super tight too.....guess not lol.

I bought a refurbished Steam Deck about a month ago, this was before Valve offered it so it was from Ebay and one annoying thing that I found, which I guess would apply to any second hand Steam Deck, is that if the previous owner redeemed the Steam Deck Rewards, you can't. Kind of annoying that they're tried to serial number and can only be redeemed once.
@samganji6987

My regular one and only steam deck is like that. Has a bit of bleeding. I guess some just returned it haha. I didn't really care. One thing I one to point out, you called the shield a thermal shield. Which it could help with the thermals of the SSD sure but the real reson behind the shield is to protect the SSD from electro static noise. Because it is close to the CPU. Valve themselves have mentioned this and this is the reason they have printed "SSD is not meant to be user replaced" in their product page. In practice you should be fine changing the SSD to a shield less one, but your milage may vary.
@chrcoluk
@chrcoluk 8 місяців тому
If that is IPS bleed, then yeah they not gonna care, its part and parcel of IPS and luck of the draw. Its unlikely its a refurbished specific issue. I think I am about to pull the trigger on 512 gig refurbished, realistically 64 and 256 refurbished are never coming back in stock, so I am now comparing it to a 64 gig new, the 64 gig new if I add a 1tb works out pretty much same price as 512 refurbished, but I am not that keen on actually swapping the SSD as I dont like messing with ribbon cables, batteries, its nowhere near as easy as an SSD swap in a PC, so the 512 refurbished might actually end up the way for me to go now.
