This video contains product placement for Freewheel. All-new SRAM XPLR gravel cycling tech! SRAM, RockShox, and Zipp have launched a collaboration called XPLR, which rivals the Shimano GRX Gravel range. This new range of drivetrain gearing, suspension, wheels, tyres, and components brings a wider choice than ever to the gravel world.
So, no matter what sort of gravel rider you are, this trio aims to give you more choice than ever to tune your bike.
The launch encompasses a wide range of components across the three brands; SRAM brings a new wider cassette and a new range of lighter 1x chainsets along with new mechs to accommodate those broader gear ranges.
Love it or hate it, gravel specific suspension is here to stay, and RockShox brings an all-new fork called the Rudy. Rest assured this isn’t a slimmed down RockShox SID, or older design reinstated. Plus, there’s a wireless (AXS controlled) Reverb dropper post with a twist too.
Finally Zipp have brought their ground-breaking single-wall MOTO tech from mountain biking to gravel, with the launch of the 101 wheelset, alongside their already available XPLR SL70 bar and XPLR gravel tyres.
So, big news from big brands! But the question is, are you a die hard Shimano GRX fan? Or are you ready to XPLR the world on your gravel machine? Let us know in the comments!

Personally, no to the suspension, but there will be some who want it. The cassette options make more sense, as aside from the mtb setups the 1x gearing was very road focussed. Having said that, I don't want 1x either 😅

No. The whole point of "gravel" is to be tested, and to have a bike that can do anything, on any terrain. Recreating mountain bikes, only with drop bars, is just going down the same high-tech rabbit hole. It's going to end up with bikes that are Vile to ride on road. Want suspension, dropper posts, etc? Get a mountain bike.

Lets play "read between the lines of our product launch" : - We can't give up a market segment to Shimano or Fox so we have to release something, but we can't get our supply and logistics chain in order (and neither can anybody else) - Mass-market products at mass-market prices doesn't get people talking and we can't meet that kind of demand anyway without cannibalizing current product lines - But speaking of those, consumers mixing and matching drivetrain bits is losing us potential sales we could get by forcing them into narrower, less flexible solutions - If we don't support mechanical we can pretend the outlandish prices are fair since for some reason electronic shifting is still a hundreds-of-dollars premium - So..... here's a fantasy lineup of halo products so expensive, niche, and with enough compatibility quirks that you won't notice that we can't actually supply anyone with most of them. Please talk about them like they're incredible new ideas and will be available on all bikes tomorrow.

Yup. The point of "gravel" is to be under-biked, like in the early days of mountain biking. A bike that's fun on or off road. This...is taking us to another set of bikes that end up being driven to ride, like most mountain bikes seem to be.

This video proves that we are still in the “Golden Age” of cycling it’s just a magnificent time to be a cyclist the recent developments are truly a stark contrast from the time I started riding back in 1974. In my estimation the intersection of mountain vs. gravel is still a work in progress and hasn’t quite converged if you will, Although I Look forward to these very rapid developments and changes, With that said would it be beneficial for me to add these new components on to my Lynskey? Well? Not necessarily I live in the flat sunshine state of Florida. Although it is nice to know that I have options, To that end great vid! Great beard keep it trim! 😉…

Great point. So much whining from other people about stuff they don't have to buy. But, I have unfond memories of my 1996 (ish) steel hard tail with awful geometry and components. No, it wouldn't have made a good 'gravel' bike. I did a heap of commuting on it. It wasn't particularly fast, but, at least it was terrifying off road. Bike today are vastly better, for about the same money, if not less (I paid about $2000 AUD for that, XC hard tail in '96. I then bought a new XC hardtail in 2018 with basically equivalent, but better, components for roughly $1900 Australian). Bikes today are much better because of this sort of innovation.

Mtb is for technical trails, mostly smaller loops with slower average speeds. Gravel is for exploring big parts of nature because you can cover nearly twice the distance on gravel on a gravel bike then you can on a mtb on a mtb trail. With a gravel bike "boring" climbs are not a pain in the ass and neither are the paved sections linking your adventure together. I believe that the main reason gravel is becoming big these days is because tyre technology improved a lot, where as before the slow rolling knobby tyres weren't fun on anything except for technical single trails and the road bike tyres were useless on dirt. Now that we have properly fast off road tyres, the gravel game has started

@@hptator I use a 10-52 cassette and think it's fine for road use. The 10-44 has almost the same gap as the 10-50 in the high gears. 10,11,13,15,17,19,21,24,28,32,38,44 10,12,14,16,18,21,24,28,32,36,42,50 Sram cassettes are expensive af so it's better to get a cassette that does it all imo unless you do not plan to ride on any hills.

@@vongdong10 I live in NSW (Australia), I have a sub8kg SC Stigmata that I use 95% on the road and the rest on unsealed roads, no trails. I currently use a 44t chainring and a 10-42 cassette (Force1 11speed). I don't really need anything bigger than a 44t for doing the few short climbs of more than 25% I'm going to do with this bicycle, what I need is smaller gaps in between high gears to keep up with my mates on the road, comfortably. It would be nice to have the option of the huge cassette in case I want to go offroad somewhere else or do a touring trip, although I could always use a smaller chainring I guess... It would also be nice to have a comparison between the two derailleurs XPLR vs Eagle, are they the same? what differences are there? what about the clutch?

I like it how these days you’re literally able to build any kind of bike. To be fair though, experience of sram SX - derailleur - where it attaches to frame is plastic - needless to say it snapped while out for a ride. Upgraded to GX. Experience of Apex similar. Oh and the price, it’s absolute garbage when you consider how expensive it is. Never had a shimano derailleur snap.

If you're only looking for 30-40mm of travel then a telescopic fork is about the worst engineering design to get there. They're heavy, flexy, require a lot of maintenance, and suffer from friction. Lauf's design is much better.
