My dad was in the Army so my brother and I went to a mix of public schools and schools in Germany owned by the DoD but run by civilians, the DoD schools were far and away better and that was in the late 80s early 90s.

I’d venture to say that there are modern slaves in a way but it is a result of debt slavery. Lots of people work their asses off day in and day out just to get by paying their student loans, mortgages, credit card debts, car payments, medical debts, etc. You could argue that they are laboring every day just to pay bills and maybe to put a very marginal amount toward savings. It’s not the same as it was in the past, but in the end it sort of qualifies IMO.
