Ten Myths About Israel
Ilan Pappé in conversation with Max Rodenbeck
Presented by Amar Ujala
Ilan Pappé is considered one of Israel’s most groundbreaking, outspoken and incisive historians and thinkers. His book Ten Myths About Israel examines contested ideas that comprise the discourse of the contemporary state of Israel, the oppression of the Palestinian people and their struggle for liberation, and explains why the two-state solution is no longer viable. It was published on the fiftieth anniversary of the Occupation. Pappé is also the author of The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine, The Idea of Israel, and two projects with Noam Chomsky, On Palestine and Gaza in Crisis. In conversation with journalist and South Asia Bureau Chief for The Economist magazine, Max Rodenbeck, Pappé discusses his work, and the truth behind the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, worsening each day.
Ilan Pappé is an Israeli historian and Director of The European Centre for Palestine Studies at the University of Exeter. Pappé has written twenty books so far, among them The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine and On Palestine (with Noam Chomsky). His latest book is The Biggest Prison on Earth: A History of the Occupied Territories.
Max Rodenbeck is a journalist, critic and writer on global affairs. Before his current post as South Asia bureau chief for The Economist, based in Delhi, he spent 30 years in the Middle East covering wars, revolutions and hubbly bubblies from Iran to Morocco.

Now that so many jews are settled in Israel where will they go? At least there are so many muslim countries surrounding palestine/Israel that can absorb this palesstine population but where will the jews go? Islam spread with the help of sword and converted the conquered lands by force, imposed their culture, language and their arab names on local populations. So everybody has different viewpoint. You cannot blame jews in Israel. Palestinians will have to live with them peacefully. Earlier the better. Otherwise there would never be any closure to this problem. Palestinians are a defeated people. Even arabs have stopped backing them. Might is Right in this world. Palestinians have become beggers for help. In the long run they will realise to be self sufficient and adjust with the jews. After all jews are semites like arabs. Same origin. So let bygones be bygones.
@melaniebaynes2730
@melaniebaynes2730 5 місяців тому
@@ravindradesai1520Wow. Palestinians have become beggars? You mean they have been forced into that! You seriously need to learn more about just what they have been subjected to for decades. What an insulting statement. If you and your family were suddenly turfed out of your home, forced into ever decreasing patches of land, having your access to water, electricity and other essential supplies severely restricted and controlled, had every aspect of your daily lives controlled, and brutalised, I'm sure you would come to the same conclusion; just let bygones be bygones. I very much doubt that's how you would feel at all. There is no excuse for anyone to be in ignorance of the way these people have been treated; there are plenty of Israelis, like Prof Pappé in this interview, Prof Gabor Maté (himself a child Holocaust survivor and ex zionist), Prof Avi Shlaim, American Jewish journalist, son of Holocaust victims, Prof Norman Finkelstein, and several others. Also numerous orthodox Jewish people and ex Israeli military forces, all speaking about the abhorrent way in which the Palestinians have been treated by the state of Israel. As Prof Shlaim has said recently, the history of the brutal oppression and occupation of Palestinian people and territory doesn't justify the October 7th Hamas attack, but it does help to explain it. The problem is, that the zionist owned and controlled MSM has long suppressed the atrocities committed by the Israeli military, and then always pushed the narrative that Palestinian = bad, but Israel = good. The whole world has turned a blind eye to decades of atrocities by Israel, and repeated breaches of international law, and numerous episodes of Israel ignoring UN declarations regarding their treatment of the Palestinians. All those nations allowing Israel's war crimes and human rights breaches, instead of making it clear that Israel's behaviour is unacceptable, those govts all have Israeli and Palestinian blood on their hands. It is a terrible situation, but the popular narrative as always presented by the media and the Israeli govt is not the correct picture.

Illans' vision of a democratic Paalstine is not only absolutely possible but necessity because most people do not want to live with war and violence. As a white South African I am grateful we had to confront our shadow side and would rather work to unlearn my privilege and bias and work towards uinderstanding and accepting and resspececting all people as human beings, than to live in an ignorant, self deluded hypocritical, immoral society which denies its own racism and inequality as you se in two different inisious forms in america and .Israel. i would rather live in a society that confronts its demons on a daily basis and can try to be honest with itself than one that lies and deceives itself at the level we see in israel because one only finds ones humanity and freedom and security in recognizing tthe humanity of the so called other.

Many thanks........Illan Pappe words are helpful, especially at a time like this when ethnic cleansing is taking place unabated. It is important that the truth of history be told and the lies be exposed else the senseless blood shedding may never end. It is up to each of us, at least in the West, where the media is so skewed toward one side, to educate ourselves, becoming a voice for those presently down trodden. If a voice is all we have, let it be loud, guaranteeing that the perpetrator of these vile crimes hear without doubt and the mistreated gain comfort that they are indeed not forgotten.

The United States should end military aid to Israel 1. Israel can pay for its own military. Israel has a strong economy, an excellent international credit rating, and runs frequent budget surplus. Israel ran an annual surplus of more than a billion dollars six out of the last ten years. 2. Military aid to Israel is a security risk. Israel is a major supplier of military technology to China. These sales have been instrumental in the modernization of the Chinese military. Israel developed the Lavi fighter from American technology with 1.5 billion in American subsidies. Israel sold the Lavi fighter to China. It is now called the J-10 and is the mainstay of the Chinese Air Force. Israel has also sold China missile guidance systems,, advanced radar systems and targeting systems. 3. Israel is a diplomatic liability. 4. Military aid to Israel is illegal under the Leahy Law because of Israel's human rights violations. Any aid to Israel is illegal under the Symington amendment which prohibits aid to nations with nuclear weapons that have not signed the nuclear non-proliferation treaty and do not permit inspections of their nuclear sites

The big difference between Israel and South Africa is that the ethno nationalist position is strongly reinforced by religious dogma. They literally say they are the chosen ones and God meant the land for them. If this is what you believe then apartheid is more just a symptom than it is a cause.

I was waiting for some myths but none appeared although I did enjoy the talk as I always do when Ilan Pappe is featured. When I hear other Israeli Jews, who actually know Palestinians speak, they say they all get along so well and they consider them friends. WHAT I've always thought is that the two Semitic peoples--Arabs and Jews-- can get along great, probably better than a gentile and either a Jew or a Arab. But the fear of the zionists is that the Palestinians have a lot more babies and that in short order they would be the majority in the country. In a democracy that would mean they would have a lot of power but I still am not quite sure if that would create the problems that the zionists fear would occur. In America of course in many Southern States the majority were people of African heritage and yet when democracy finally was manifested, I do not think that it created problems. YOU did of course have people elected to office who were non-white as they were of African origin or ancestry but it doesn't seem to have affected in a negative way the state involved. This is something I would be interested in learning about from someone who actually studies this sort of thing. The second thing that would be different if the Palestinians actually lived as equal citizens in historic Palestine --no matter what it would be called --is that their culture, being the Arab culture, would probably become dominant in short order. As is, arab culture already influences Israeli society but due to the fact that the entire section of the world where Israel is located is Arab, that culture would have a more profound influence if bith peoples assimilated; but I do not necessarily think that would be negative. Again I would like to hear someone who is a student of this type of thing to speak on this issue. The third thing is that the women would be wearing perhaps a different garb similar to what I've seen in photos of the women of Gaza which means they are clothed from head to foot in loose clothing with a hijab. MAYBE that would be considered a negative thing in a world where European dress was more common but again I don't know. IT might work out. In Cairo, you see variation in clothing, as in Turkey, with no problems. In all events you really need people to sit down and discuss these issues so that the fear is replaced by facts. THE last thing might be the most difficult is that Israelis would have to have a lot of counseling by therapists who are very well trained in dealing with PTSD as well as dealing with people who are possessed by negative fears & prejudices that are founded on fantasies that control their life and their behavior and their thoughts and their feelings and their actions. The Palestinians by now would have a lot of PTSD problems also but I think they're more immersed in reality: they know what Jews are about; they know what the zionists are about; and they know what they are about; and they deal more in facts and less in fiction. THE zionists would need a hell of a lot of therapy in order to be able to function in a truly Democratic nation. THE idea of a Jewish nation is ridiculous on its face because it can NOT be a democracy if it is a theocracy. THIS would have to be examined deeply by the zionists and seen as it is-- a flawed reality that does NOT even concur with what their holy book says should be. THAT is, their God NEVER said that the Jews should have a nation-- at least not until the Messiah comes and that does not look like it's anytime soon and it definitely has not occurred as of now. My last comment would be related to something I thought when I returned from Pakestine/ Israel which was probably in the eighties: I was in a cafe in Berkeley and I met someone from Israel and I said I'd been there and it reminded me of THE KING OF HEARTS ,which is a very old film from the 60s. He knew that film but his friend, who was israeli, did not and I could see him explaining in Hebrew what that film was about. I highly recommend you try to see that film. IT was a dark comedy you could say and in essence I think I was spot on when I'd said that's what Israel reminded me of. The plot is: AFTER World War II in a small village all the people have left & the insane asylum is opened up and all of the inhabitants of the asylum take over the town and they become the mayor and the policemen and the firemen and the baker and the candlestick maker so on. IT was the insane running the town. In my youth, I was very insightful and that is exactly what I see now occurring in the so-called land of Israel and I am impressed by the acuity of my understanding on intuitive level what was occurring there and as always I was quite frank with these young Israelis and I remember they were quite somber when they heard what I had to say and they had NO response. I did not then and I do not now apologize for the veracity of what I said. IT may be harsh truth but it is the truth. WHAT I see in Israel now when I watch young people smiling as they say-- we will kill these Palestinians-- is beyond the pale. These are young, beautiful females and males and I cannot conceive at that stage in my life --smiling and saying-- I will kill everyone. AND "everyone" is the Palestinians of course. Then we see the video where they teach very young children who don't even know right from wrong yet to sing a song about killing all the Palestinians and they are NOT smiling but you can tell they don't quite understand what they're singing about, even though they are now being taught to hate. Recently young Zionists have created a hip hop wherein they not only expropriate hip hop from the African American culture, but they also steal the name (ie. Swords & Strikes) from the Arab culture, so in essence they have stolen the type of music and the name of their song and it's all about killing the Palestinians. AGAIN , these are very young female and male zionists singing and laughing and smiling as they talk about killing an entire group of people. This is a VERY serious manifestation of a mental problem that must be treated before anything can be done as regards the creation of a democracy in historic Palestine.

The Europeans have always had a ‘Jewish Problem’ throughout their history. They tried various types of isolation and extermination including ghetto establishments, pogroms, and the holocaust. Muslims never had. Jews lived freely in Palestine, Istanbul, Baghdad, Cairo, Morocco and other places for centuries. They actually flourished in Muslim Spain. Then in the late 19th centuries ideas like religious separation, nationalism socialism, communism, and others emerged. Zionism was their latest version. The same religious fanatics that persecuted the Jews throughout history began supporting Zionism. They don’t want the Jews to live amongst them. Zionists led by Theodore Hertzel held their First Zionist Congress in Basel, Switzerland in 1897 and later British foreign secretary Balfoure made his infamous declaration in 1917, both with the same objective of solving this ‘Jewish Problem. That is how this colonial, imperial and now apartheid enterprise began

I never read Ilans book, but the first must be, "A land without people for a people without land", which always accompanies colonialism and genocide. Another was,"making the deserts bloom." Another is that Israel is the only democracy in the region- Lebanon? Every secular and Democratic state that the US and Israel subvert? "Jews are the only people to not have a state". Jews, for their own safety, need a Jewish state.( the opposite being true). My favourite is "The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem", pure orientalism. Bourgeois zionism's deals with the Nazis (the Havara Agreement, 1933, which helped towards the Shoah). There are plenty more which you can Google.

Israel could erase the palestinian people in a stroke but it will never erase Islam nor defeat Israel's sworn enemies. And I say that not as a muslim or Islamist. Zionists in Israel today recognise that their hard line violent position is dictated by the fact that they are surrounded by Arab countries - some of whom - like Iran - will never recognise the state of Israel. The conversation would have taken a different course had those parameters also been explored. Nevertheless it brings me hope that there are many courageous people including IIan Pappe who are willing to stand up for the truth in the face of much hostility.

Besides them, many Arab sources confirm the fact that the Holy Land was still Jewish by population and culture in spite of the Diaspora: ·In 985 c.e. the Arab writer Muqaddasi complained that in Jerusalem the large majority of the population were Jewish, and said that "the mosque is empty of worshippers..." . ·Ibn Khaldun, one of the most creditable Arab historians, in 1377 c.e. wrote: "Jewish sovereignty in the Land of Israel extended over 1400 years... It was the Jews who implanted the culture and customs of the permanent settlement". After 300 years of Arab rule in the Holy Land, Ibn Khaldun attested that Jewish culture and traditions were still dominant. By that time there was still no evidence of "Palestinian" roots or culture . ·The historian James Parker wrote: "During the first century after the Arab conquest [670-740 c.e.], the caliph and governors of Syria and the [Holy] Land ruled entirely over Christian and Jewish subjects. Apart from the Bedouin in the earliest days, the only Arabs west of the Jordan were the garrisons". Even though the Arabs ruled the Land from 640 c.e. to 1099 c.e., they never became the majority of the population. Most of the inhabitants were Christians (Assyrian and Armenian) and Jews.

Bernie Nice cherry picking. Let's get into the NOW, okay ? FACT . 1948: the vast majority of the population in the Holy Land was Muslim; 12% was Christian (& of that 11% have slowly been driven out by the violence of the zionists because when they bomb, they also kill Christians); & the Jews were maybe 20 percent . WHY, you ask, were they only 20%? WELL there's two reasons. NUMBER ONE. THE first reason is what that ZIONISTS fear the most--Muslims have a lot of babies. Jews, including zionists, do not have a lot of babies. Fact number 2. When the Muslims became the majority and the dominant culture, there was NOT prejudice BUT MANY of the Jews, most especially the Mizrahi & some Sephardic-- all who are semites just like the Arabs are semites--converted. THIS is NOT the first time people have converted and definitely NOT the first time the Jews have converted . JUST look at Spain once it became Christian again; many Jews converted to Catholicism.( See also New Mexico if u want an example closer to home .) The fact is-- Jews and Muslims often get along BETTER than Jews and gentiles and that's just a fact. As usual it was the way the colonial power England handled the Middle East that resulted in this ongoing catastrophe. Same thing in India. I refer you to the book--MIDNIGHT CHILDRENS, by Salmon Rushdie. So please look at the facts in the 21st century. The Muslims did not fight the Jews historically, it is the Christians who fought the Muslims in the crusades and lost ; and the Christians who fought the Jews in World War II by way of the Nazis and they lost; and now it's the Christians who are actually using the Muslims against the Jews, both as pawns in their game to control the Middle East. And, in case you have not noticed, the Christians, ie the US & the UK who alone voted against a ceasefire, are losing again. Please open your eyes 🙈and see👁️👁️ what's truly happening.

One thing that is NOT a myth is that Israel is a productive and functioning state which means it stands above 95% of the countries in the world. Not bad given the mess of the ME.

Israel has received 30% of all US foreign aid since WW2 - adjusted for inflation, this is more than the amount of money that the WHO claim it would take to end world hunger. It's not really surprising that it is a functional state.

I don't see what this Max character is doing in this interview? Basically crapping on Pappe's hopes is rude at best. Furthermore, his idiotic take on Ukraine has not aged well. If Putin is such a monster, why did it take him a mere two weeks after the invasion to sit down with Zelensky and agree to peace terms...an agreement that was overturned by Boris Johnson and his overlords in Washington?
@johnhenry3536
@johnhenry3536 2 місяці тому
You pose a stupid question with an obvious answer. The entire world remembers that Putin's illegal invasion was supposed to take mere days to decisively win. That didn't happen, obviously. Putin did not "agree to peace terms" as you allege either, he demanded that Ukraine surrender. Putin is a monster and if you have not yet realized that fact, then you are not paying attention at all. He's the worst of the worst.

No. They are Arabs from neighboring countries that moved to the Jewish land for work. (There are also some leftover Turks from the Ottoman Empire.) Common 'palestinian' last names are al-Masri (the Egyptian,), al-Djazair (the Algerian), el-Mughrabi (the Moroccan), al-Yamani (the Yemenite) and even al-Afghani.

How do you explain the dialect of Palestinian Arabic, with its unique substrate of Aramaic? How do you explain repeated DNA tests that links them 50% to Bronze Age canaanites? There was never a major population replacement event at the village level in the region. The Muslim conquest of the Levant in 634 involved famously small forces constantly on the move. Aramaic and Arabic were then spoken bilingually for centuries before they merged into Palestinian Arabic.

Contemptuously ,it has to be expressed for all to know,that this ongoing Israeli atrocious campaign against humanity would not be allowed to happen ,if not for the wholehearted support by the Christians of all ilks;the special culprit being ,the biblical Armageddon believers .One can say, without a shadow of doubt, that Christians are accomplices in that hellish crime,all stemming from a collection of a deranged tales called the Bible!
