You can test the performance of your ultrasonic cleaner by means of a foil test. Here, we will explain the correct method of performing a foil test and how you can evaluate the result. See our website for more information! www.ultrasoniccleaner.co.uk/te...
The performance of your ultrasonic cleaner is determined by the intensity, strength and distribution of the cavitation in the fluid. Intensity, strength and distribution are made visible with the help of aluminium foil. More information www.ultrasoniccleander.co.uk

Received my new ultracronic cleaner today... followed all instruction, but some stained spoons in, a soiled ceramic coaster, set to 40 minutes and 80% temp added a spot of washing up liquid. Cleaner made a buzzing noise, got hot, steamed up. 40 minutes later a 'ding' then it stopped. Removed the tray and checked the items... WHAT, just the same as when I put them in! @JiveAmpersan
@JiveAmpersan 10 років тому
It depends upon what it is that you are cleaning whether or not you have to use a chemical bath. The chemicals in the chemical bath change depending on the job, and are typically being used more for their interactions with the ultrasonic cleaner then for their own cleaning properties. I found latem.com/UItrasonic-Cleaning-vs-Drum-Washing-Auger-Washing-.htm to give a brief explanation of this.

Suppose I want to clean items made from aluminum; this type of cleaning does not seem like a good idea. Are the holes formed from the ultrasonic action of the machine or the cleaning agent?
@Dark6star
@Dark6star 8 років тому
+Creative Planet Janet The video is titled testing the performance of your ultrasonic cleaner, not your cleaning solution, therefor its the ultrasonic cleaner making the holes, not the solution. Aluminum would be fine as not as it's not as thin as aluminum foil. Also I believe this is just water, other high pH, alkaline solutions can clean almost anything, but if pH goes too high, especially with softer metals like aluminum, parts can be damaged.

ukposts.info/have/v-deo/qaqSgXicoo52jnk.html as the guy in that video says, it are air bubbles in the water that explose and cause damage due to the ultrasonic waves. and that such a thing shouldn't happen when you have a proper cleaning fluid that is degassed
@therealstubot
@therealstubot 5 років тому
@@JB-kh7vg Caviatation bubbles are what do the cleaning. If you don't have cavitation bubbles in your ultrasonic cleaner, you might as well just hang your part in a bucket of static cleaner. If the guy in the video you linked in would have tried tap water without sweep, and distilled water without sweep, he would have gotten the same result on the aluminum foil. I've done this myself. If he would have used sweep on both, he would have gotten the same result. Degassing is crucial because bubbles in the medium that are not cavitation bubbles cause by the transducer, act as buffers and reduce the amount of cleaning action. Sweep is a frequency sweeping of the transducer that combats standing waves from forming extra hot spots in the water. Sweep will greatly reduce the damage an ultrasonic cleaner can do to a part, and give a better result overall. My unit doesn't have sweep, but I don't need it.

The General Sonic GS-1 is a fixed frequency ultra sonic cleaner. This is good for jewelry and car parts. Nothing delicate. The reason it puts holes in the aluminum foil is because of ultrasonic hot spots due to the fixed frequency(i.e. non-rotating frequency). A quality cleaner will rotate the frequency, say between 40 and 48Khz to avoid this kind of physical damage. If you put circuit boards in the cleaner shown they would all be damaged.
@therealstubot
@therealstubot 5 років тому
:| Wish I'd have known that before I invested in my cleaner... although in fairness, my cleaning needs are automotive parts, machine tool parts cleaning, and some range brass. My cleaner destroys aluminum foil, and seems to be fine with thicker aluminum parts as long as I use a mild detergent or surfactant in the water.

So do you know which is a good ultrasonic machine for guns? I'm looking for one, and still not sure if one will damage any aluminum parts on a gun if I use it...even if I get one from say Hornady, I'm confused about it damaging anything on guns. I guess the steel is a given, that it won't be destroyed, but there are alloys in both uppers and lowers, I guess. I wanna build an AR platform pistol, is that something that will be damaged by an ultrasonic machine, or is it the cleaner solution, or both?
@1madmax22
@1madmax22 5 років тому
@@therealstubot This video is showing aluminum being destroyed. and, a guy in another video said don't put aluminum in an ultrasonic cleaner, it will pit it. IDK for sure, Im trying to find out if these will damage anything on guns. I mean if its just aluminum that will be damaged, I can try to keep that out of there. what about alloys? They should address this stuff in these video's...Damn it.
@therealstubot
@therealstubot 5 років тому
@@1madmax22 I put aluminum in mine all the time. I've never damaged any aluminum parts. Aluminum foil is extremely thin, it's not very durable. Being so thin, and with such a large area relative to it's thickness, I assume its very susceptible to damage from cavitation bubbles. I use a few drops of plain ol hand soap in my cleaner, and the important thing is to dry your parts off as soon as you remove them from the cleaner. You're more likely to get water damage than cleaner damage to aluminum parts in my experience. I have some alloy 1911's and when I get back from the range, I strip them and throw everything but the barrels in the cleaner. I never do this to my AR-15's, I don't want to fully strip out the steel parts ( like expensive geissele triggers ) so they just get a good wipe and bore snake. I did get some scuffing on an aluminum cigar tube once, when the tube was resting on the bottom of the cleaner. Superficial damage at worst, and only because I wasn't being careful in loading it. You can get similar damage with any material you throw in an ultrasonic cleaner if it rests on the bottom where the transducer is mounted.
@1madmax22
@1madmax22 5 років тому
@@therealstubotWhat brand and model do you have? I was thinking about the Hornady, the long one bc I like the small tank to rest on the rim of the bigger tank and CLP bathe my pistols then let it drip dry, plus getting an air compressor to blow water out in-between water and oil -- is what I planned on doing. I know that seems like a lot as far as cost, but about $400 for the ultrasonic and $400 for the air compressor...to me worth it if all I have to do is rod the barrels out... And why not the barrels? I know they still need to be cleaned with a rod, but wouldn't the cleaner get most of the burned powder, and other left behind? Oh, the Hornady has at least two transducers too. From what I've read or watched, the best is an ultrasonic that sweeps from higher to lower frequencies, but thats getting into 4 digit dollars, too damn much. One of those companies wanted $5K--ok, thanks, bye. One that seemed to work really well was the Lyman 6000 and another Lyman. Thanks for responding, big help. Ive been pulling my hair out trying to figure out the best of the cheaper ones. Still like to know what you're using and why you don't do barrels too, REALLY appreciate it, thanks again.

Sticking my finger in the water was a good enough sign of operation. The noise they make may also be a good indicator? I have yet to find a 1.2 litre UC that lasts more than 10 8 minute operations. Seems to me, the ones I have had have a short life.

I've been using my Harbor Freight 2.5-liter model for six years, RayL12. I run it for eight minutes, then let it cool eight minutes. These inexpensive cleaners cannot be run and run and run and run; they overheat the transducer. Then they fail. My guess is you've not been letting yours sufficiently cool. Lots of heat is generated when also generating a frequency of 400,000 to 500,000 cycles per second. You have to let the transducer cool. Try it...
@RayL12
@RayL12 9 років тому
rootbeer4969 You are most probably right? Although I only use it occasionally, there was the odd time when I ran it 3 times consecutively. I inspected the 'supply wire to transducer plate' and found it heavily sooted. Thinking it was a straightforward soldering job, I was surprised to see how easily the interface was destroyed. Should I consider buying another, I will heed your words.

The perforation was due to the foil flexing, not because ultrasonic cleaners destroy aluminum. I regularly clean aluminum parts in mine with no ill effects. If you want to clean your aluminum foil... then you are correct - an ultrasonic cleaner is a poor choice. Cleaning solution choice IS important, as some cleaners will stain or corrode aluminum.
