I love the idea behind this challenge, I just wish I could actually join in in a worthwhile way. This years Oscars run starting at 8PM my time, I'm young, unemployed and living with my parents, with no irl friends in sight, and very limited communication skills or even artistic skills so I can't even do something visually quirky. Last year I recorded mysel, basically just talking or doing nothing or being on the computer, and tried to see if I could make something out of it, nothing. It was just a bunch of nothing and believe me I tried, and I kept trying but there was nothing worth salvaging, and nowhere close to 40 minutes of stuff worth not cutting out, also I was editing on my phone so there's that. Ended up never uploading anything but the regret won't let me delete the files. I wish the best of luck to anyone who joins the challenge and actually tries to make something, and to anyone else who feels as powerless to do it as I am... Well, I feel ya.

Joel, I would love to suggest creating a voting system. Have people submit through a Google form that would make the movie go into a category. We get a playlist for each category. We get another form to vote and you watch the best of the submissions! Now I know you probably would prefer to watch all of our videos on your own terms anyways. So just a suggestion 😁

Alright, just to warn you, this is a very long comment, maybe I'll try and find some forum somewhere to post it. It's actually too long to post as one yt comment, so this is the first part. Some of Joel's videos are among my favourite youtube videos-not all of them, but a decent number--; up there with the best of Andrew Rousso, Cilvanis, ProZD, dunkey, Kracc Bacc, PilotRedSun, Ethereal Snake and Mashed's pat and tomas epic. I enjoyed this video itself, Joel presented it well and the videos concerned all looked promising... Having established that I think highly of Joel, I've got to crticise a bit here. Two videos that I tried from the list didn't grab me and I had to click-off a few minutes into each of them. And my confidence then in the rest of them was too much shaken to continue trying them. The real-life interview one was fine, though the band at the end I found to be too dull to watch all of that final segment. Also it seemed that all of those interviewees, besides the girl with the dog, were pretty much from the same cultural-identity of sort-of post-hippism, and it felt like they weren't random strangers. Maybe either the same sort-of people had gravitated to an advertisement he had put-out asking for interviewees; or else he had targeted people whom he felt fit inside the culture he felt comfortable working with; I don't think there was a very good cross-section of society in there. The comedy about the guys making soup started-off well with the guy doing 'minecraft'-y things to a can of soup; but the rest of that opening scene just fell flat for me, without anything carrying it besideds the vibe of "lol we're making a film-isn't this outrageous". I wanted it to improve, and I held-off from clicking-off for as long as I could, but then there was a bad mom-joke and that did it for me. The one about the guy in the office. Again, I gave it as long as I could without clicking-off. But throughout the opening I just didn't get it. So there's a guy who's staying all night at an office... and he seems to be afraid of the dark or something. It was taking far too long to either show me that it would deliver some quality entertainment or else just to establish the drama of it; and then came a joke where he either accidentally or purposefully dials a phone-sex number which was just unfunny, as it didn't make sense if he'd accidentally dialed it, nor did it really make sense if he'd purposely done so, so I had to click-off. Unless I see any of the rest of these videos taking-off I'm probably not going to risk 'burning' myself again by giving them my viewing-time. I don't know who has the time to give over a whole hour to something that could very well turn-out to be completely dull and uninteresting. A video has to promise some good entertainment if it's to ask more than five minutes of one's time. Today there's so much good entertainment on youtube to watch, made by people with little to no more resources at their disposal than the people who made these videos. Maybe back in 2006 someone making a home-made film like this, that didn't necessarily have any particular merrit in itself, would be novel and quaint, and would gain some attention just by being bold enough to be a long video on a home-camera; but we're long past that now. People make really cool stuff on youtube with just a computer and commercially available hardware and software. Stuff gets views for a reason: Andrew Rousso is genuinely very very funny and witty; Terminal Montage makes superbly keen and engaging video-game animation parodies; ProZD's best skits you can watch over and over; Arlo makes enthralling video-game commentary; xQc in his heyday was simply a blast to watch no matter what he was doing; a small creator called Shortcxke has mesmerising short animations that are filled with personal style, character, and refinement of technique; it goes without saying that Joel's best videos are obviously extemely entertaining. I don't think there's any place anymore on youtube for people who are just winging-it without something strong to deliver the audience. youtube now is an arena, its the colosseum in Rome: if you're good, you survive; if you don't come prepared, you die. In Super Smash Bros., the people who have worked hard at their game ascend through the ranks and their skill can be seen by all; those who aren't prepared to craft quality into their play won't be shown any mercy by the competition; because there's no room for that-both the prize and glory awaiting those who triumph in Smash, as well as the stage they play upon, is too valuable to allow unqulified noobs to have any lime-light there. By drawing an analogy with Smash there I'm trying to illustrate that the competition today on youtube is fierce, and is so for a good reason. Yes the algorithm isn't always fair, but if you craft something very good then its going to get seen by its due audience sooner or later: all the channels that have a single video with millions of views and almost no views at all on the rest of their channel are testament to this. I don't think it's the case that creators like those showcased in this video have made excellent entertainment and just need some publicity from a known entertainer like Joel to take-off. From what I can see, they haven't made any "excellent entertainment", and so no matter how much encouragement they receive from Joel, they're not going to get an audience. I think youtube itself is encouragement enough for artists: as I've already said, there's so much quality stuff on here made by indivduals just doing their own thing; that in itself inspires any would-be creators to go and put in the time to make something cool to emulate them. I'm not going to give hours of my viewing-time to people who don't really deserve it for charity's sake; in the same way as when I play Smash I don't just lie-down and let people worse than me win so that they can get a chance at progressing through the ranks (with the exception of Samus mains, because what's the point of fighting Samus mains?). There's no need, these people aren't being hard-done-by in any sense: they just haven't made anything excellent yet, and so the general audience won't give them attention yet. With all my youtube-accounts combined I think I have a list of about 200 channels I like enough to subscribe to; I can't think of a single one who is 'unrecognised'; if their view- and subscriber-numbers are smaller the reason is clear that it is because they focus on more niche themes; when the channel is larger it's clear that the reason is because their videos have a broader appeal in society; the smaller channels I subscribe to make just as good stuff as the larger ones I'm subscribed to, it's just the smaller ones are more niche. End of part-one of this comment.

Beginning of part-two of my long comment. Maybe Joel wants to argue that film-making, in its traditional sense, needs to be taken from the jealous and greedy hollywood producers and given back to the people. I agree that hollywood is dying and that there is a dearth of good film today; and everyone 'in theory' can make a feature-length film for "zero dollars". But the more funding a project has, inevitably its potential for quality increases, and Joel's own "Anyone Else but Me" is testament to this. "Anyone Else but Me" was able to artistically soar because it had a reasonable budget supporting it, I think; not that it was carried by its budget-the performances in it were all terrific and the script and plot were very well designed-but it would not have been as good without the thousands of dollars that went into producing it. Good actors aren't going to work for free, and there's a reason they are qualified as "good actors". Good production-design and visual-effects take a lot of time and resources to put-together, and they really do contribute enormously to the quality of films: imagine LotR without its CGI... So, in the end, to make a really good feature-film that establishes itself in history as a fantastic piece of entertainment-with the odd exception-it needs money behind it. It needs outstanding creative vision, and it needs money-it needs both of those things. And so we can see then why society at large gets to decide what films get that financial-support: the producer has to be satisfied that the average non-youtube-enthusiast would want to see it, in order to be sure that the film will earn enough at the box-office to cover its enormous production-cost, which cost I've justified in this paragraph. And unfortunately, the average person on the planet doesn't care for high-quality entertainment; and until they do, film-makers with the "excellent creative vision" generally aren't going to get the financial-support to make their dreams a reality. So until then-besides other media like indie video-games and books-I think comedy shorts, entertainment making heavy use of "adobe"-esque editing, and animation are the ways for independent entertainers who hold the great creative-vision to produce excellent entertainment. Live-action film-making is necessarily such a collaborative medium: a project in that medium usually needs to be directed and headed by the vision of one person for it to function; but the problem is that it's too much to ask the rest of the collaborators to commit heavily to that single person's vision unless they are being paid to do so-as that single vision is not their own, it belongs to another person-and without that heavy collaborative commitment, the project will only ever be so-good. Suspension of disbelief is essential to any entertainment that isn't pure comedy, and it is a very fragile thing: seeing lavalier-mics on the actors breaks it; hearing echo or inconsistencies and distortions otherwise in audio breaks it; amateurish lighting or editing breaks it; acting that is in any way unpolished and unprofessional breaks it; if the musical-score is at all gawky or mismatched then it will break; obviously, any sort of sniggering or smirking from the actors as they break character absolutely shatters it into a million tiny pieces. Drama in film or on the stage is pure magic, and the web of that magic consists of this suspension-of-disbelief from the audience: that suspension has to be more-or-less effortless for the audience in order for them to really enjoy the drama; as soon as extreme demands are called on them to ignore all those things I just mentioned then, no matter how kind and supportive the audience, they will not be able to be immersed in the drama of that performance as the magic will have been broken, and the piece will simply fail to impact and move them. Imagine how inifinitely less impactful any great scene from cinema-history would have been had there been any slip-ups with regard to those aspects I mentioned a few sentences ago: just to take one example, The Ride of the Rohirim is perfect-the audio balancing is perfect, the music couldn't have been written more aptly, the CGI is flawless-; if it had been any less perfect than that then it would have tumbled a long way down from the plinth it sits on today and would never have succeeded as being the iconic, inspring and profoundly moving scene it is today. Pure comedy is different to drama as it doesn't really require the suspension-of-disbelief from the audience: it's largely satyr and parody, so everyone in the room knows the score and no-one's there hoping to be profoundly moved and touched by it; not that that prevents pure comedy from qualifying as excellent entertainment, of course, the names I mentioned at the start of this comment prove this. A note here: I distinguish 'pure' comedy from dramatic comedy: 'pure' comedy like Andrew Rousso's doesn't require the audience's suspension of disbelief; whereas 'dramatic' comedy like Doug Liman's Swingers does require it, as the comedy is dependent on the underlying drama. To say a little now about the 'awards' theme of these oscars videos of Joel's. There seems to be an attitude in them of "it's not fair that common people with artistic vision don't get to make hollywood blockbusters", and then a self-congratulatory feeling that follows that with respect to people who have made the semblence of a film on their home-cameras, giving unwarranted praise and attention to those objectively less polished, less worked, and less entertaining videos. To rage against the hollywood machine is pointless: the state of hollywood reflects society's current artistic appetite; there's nothing anyone can do to change society's artistic appetite-it will change when it wants to, for better or for worse. And as I've set-out in this comment, unless your project appeals to society's current artistic appetite, you won't get the wealth of hollywood behind your project to allow it to bloom into the potential it may otherwise have. I don't think live-action drama is the medium for any writer or director without financial-support to effectively express themselves in, for the reasons I've laid-out in this comment. As for comedy, Joel and ProZD etc. have already proven time and again, that yes, you can make something very funny for zero-dollars, and if it is indeed funny then it will blow-up. If one wants to make something dramatic then one needs to either make it as an animation, make a video-game for it, make a painting of it, write a book of it; or else submit to trying to find a place for yourself in the film, voice-acting, and theatre industry where you would be happy to compromise on your own artistic-vision in return for participating in the creaion of live-action and voice-acted drama. Self-congratulation is generally counter productive: it gives false-hope to those that haven't made anything good yet and could diminish their zeal to improve by making them complacent; though, if a good work is in the state of waiting for its audience to inevitably arrive, then some self-encouragement can keep a creator treading water until that time. 'Under-ratedness' is fallacious: the artist-audience communication system generally works--if a piece is good, its audience WILL find it, and if that audience is smaller then that will just be because the theme of the piece is niche.

I have a problem with how you use the word entertainment throughout here. For instance you say “A video has to promise some good entertainment if it’s to ask more than 5 minutes of one’s time” I also have a problem with your association of views to how good the quality of the video must be. You say for instance, “Unless I see any of the rest of these videos taking off” or “Stuff gets views for a reason.” You have a false assumption of what this challenge is. It’s like trying to explain to Mr. Beast that videos can have dull moments and still be as a whole good. He doesn’t get it. He’s so content brained, as is our culture, (as are you it seems) that everything has to be fine-tuned to jack into our brains and entertain us better than anything else possible. It seems like movies, or arthouse indie films like these, just aren’t for you. They aren’t for most people, and they aren’t trying to be. This is art, not content. Art doesn’t appease an algorithm just to appease an algorithm, it is what it is, and if nobody likes it, it doesn’t care. And that’s what you miss. These films are attempting to be artistic, not commercially successful or publicly viral. And certainly not competitive in the ridiculous survival analogy you bring up, like we are making movies like our lives depend on it lol. These are hour long UKposts videos by small creators, and this is Joel saying there IS a place on UKposts for them. All of this aside, there are over 800 of these things, and you have judged them all based off the few you have skimmed. Nobody has any reason to value your opinion of all of them, because you haven’t seen one of them. The ultimate irony is that you have yourself done what you seem to despise about this challenge. You took an opinion you had, an idea, and stretched it out into a bloated and repetitive bore of a comment. This could have been 5 sentences, and the UKposts comment algorithm would have given it more love. You expressed yourself in a long format even though most people will never take the time to read all of it... just like all of these movies.

I have little to add that Space and Jennifer didn’t already cover. Maybe this art-first film world isn’t for you and that’s okay. Your assertion that “Anyone Else But Me” was only good because of a budget is an absurd premise, given that its budget is still ludicrously low compared to any other produced film in history. Even adjusted for inflation Clerks cost 5X as much to make and received hundreds of thousands in marketing after the fact. A $4000 movie is still squarely in line with this independent film community’s radical anti-production ideologies and proves our points far more than it proves them wrong. And your whole argument is dismantled by my most beloved movie “Pretend That You Love Me”, which cost $0 to make. It’s been taught in multiple college classes and is held dear by many as a favorite movie, I bring this up not to brag but to show that a $0 movie is just as capable as any. You say it’s the exception not the rule, but why can’t anyone make an exception with enough dedication? There is no cap on how many exceptions can be made, and if you make enough you rewrite the rules. This challenge gives people the building blocks to begin to realize that.
