I don't think people were under the impression that there's anything untoward happening with not directly paying your friends for the acting, the only thing is that it kind of adds a pretty big asterisk next to the notion of "here's how cheaply you can make a feature!". I think it would behoove these breakdowns just to recognize that most people don't have access to so many great actor friends who are both willing & able to spend the time collaborating for the fun of it, that's all. It's definitely nothing less than awesome & inspiring that you do have that circle and you're able to make these things together. Looking forward to watching!

it's cool that you have turned off mid-roll ads for these, that makes a huge difference. One of my favourite bands (Beach House) for my favourite album (Once twice melody) have the full album on YT with lyric animations in one video with no ads in it, and I just think that's such a cool thing to do, really putting their art first. It's also cool that you're looking after your buddies and putting money (sensibly) into all of this. And thanks for sharing the break-downs of the costs! It's clear how much love you put into everything you make. I worked in the film industry from around 2011 until 2021 and the reason I left was because the lack of love in the big movies and television shows. It's so refreshing to see you busting down the doors with your pure passion for just making what you want to make and not expecting anything in return.

My Favorite movie you have made! I was going to suggest you could make a behind the scenes documentary for one of the movies you make this year as a way to buy yourself a little more time on the next one if needed and have that be one of the features. Blake's video answered my prayers a couple hours later lol!

Viewer budget breakdown: Arizona KiwiStrab - $1.01 Half a bag of kettle cooked air fried potato chips with Himalayan sea salt - $2.50 (Note that i definitely splurged a little here, the average viewer could easily get by with the store brand or your typical lays but I wanted to minimize my grease intake so I did not get lethargic half way through.) Four recycled paper towels. - 10 cents So my grand total came to $3.61 which is pretty good for an hour and a half. Don’t let these numbers deter you though, one could definitely get away with much less. Maybe stick to water and a bag of microwaved pop corn or a jar of peanut butter and box of ritz you could make last for four movies if you don’t exceed one sleeve. I gotta say, I loved the locations in your latest film. They're like characters in and of themselves.

I’m so inspired by your process and so interested in what it must be like pivoting from movie to movie each month. I don’t know if you’ve thought this far in advance, but I would be so stoked if sometime next year you put out a longer-form retrospective about your year of movies. I’d happily watch a super long “Joel sits and talks to the camera” style video, a BTS video like Blake did, a video of you reading through your notebook of ideas, or a thing where you have all your friends send in a video detailing what their roles were like. Or basically anything else to help you process your year of movies. I know this is already an incredibly generous year for you with the fact that you’re gifting us with 12 feature films and 24 videos on this channel, and I definitely respect that there may be a lot of aspects about this year that you want to keep for just you and your friends. But if you do decide to go in depth recounting your year, I’m letting you know now that I’m 100% here for it.

Loved the film and these breakdowns are so fascinating! I’d love to hear more about how you wrote the screenplay. I assume this was primarily improv again, but it was extremely well structured and juggling the locations had to be tough. Do you just write an outline or have a full screenplay?

You’re incredible man. You have such a genuine aura and have a lot of integrity. It’s really amazing and I hope you succeed financially doing what you love, but I know you’ll do it either way and that’s damn inspiring.

For the audio phasing I recommend checking out the auto align post 2 plugin. It costs about as much as your new mics, but you'd see a huge jump in quality without needing to painstakingly align or chop up the audio tracks. Can't wait to see the next film!

I would add too that depending on where you live, it might be worth to start an LLC to write-off the money you spend if you do have income coming in. I've saved thousands of dollars writing off all my film equipment and software.

I think that 50mm lens paid off. When I watched the film, I thought to myself "something feels different about the cinematography" but I couldn't put my finger on it. I think it was, in part, that deeper depth of field in some shots. Something I'd love to see somewhere in your 12 months of movies is a movie made without other youtubers. I know that's where a large source of your acting friends are, but I sometimes feel as though I'm seeing a series of cameos or reoccurring characters, and it can pull me out of the story a bit. I'd love to see a Joel Haver film with some different faces on the screen, maybe an older cast? Just a thought. Anyway. Loved this last film. I think it is some of your best work to date. Can't wait to see more.

I think people are being a little weird about the not paying friends thing. When I was in college I had a filmmaking friend and we all helped him make his small movies, all contributed in some way, and I don't recall any money exchanging hands, but I do recall some good times and fun had well making films, and to me, those memories are more than payment enough. As you get older and people move away, get married, have families, get jobs, ect., these kind of relationships become harder to maintain, but I'm inspired to try to be a little more active in my local community now, reach out to people, and help them with their little projects. Incidentally, it's Joshua Tree, and so you'd think there would be a bigger filmmaking community out there, but it's mostly musicians and painters - I guess LA sucks them all in ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thanks for the breakdowns and the commentary. I was questioning the actors' pay right around the time you talked about it in the video and I really appreciate the honesty of your approach. In the end there is still a trade happening, but instead of money you repay them with your friendship, time, exposure, and potentially some kind of revenue down the line. I'm curious if there is any kind of deal or even unspoken understanding between you all, that if you end up making a lot of money for some content (which seems more likely because your channel is much bigger than theirs and likelier to go viral), what do you do about it, is there a rev share, do you keep it all and repay them only out of your kindness, and are you explicit about it? It feels like money is the essential difference between making good art and making commercial content. And if you're upfront, you can ensure the people who stick around are true to their beliefs and you'll have a better collaboration; and if they can't or won't stick around because of money, you can just take the project in a different direction, and collab when the conditions are better. This also works when you do some kind of money deal upfront, but the problem is, as someone else commented, when people are forced to stay in a situation they don't like anymore because they depend on that money. For context, I'm a game developer and musician, and I am dealing with these problems practically for many years now, with questionable success. My solution after being burned a few times was to not really collaborate for a while, and it's a really bad solution which I'm in the process of changing.

I constantly felt at the verge of cringing for what the characters were up to (not because it was bad writing, because the writing was good, just because those kinds of situation make me cringe) and I generally don't like cringing. I'm nevertheless glad to have supported this Film on Patreon and I'll gladly continue supporting your future films, even if some of them are not in my taste. I hope you enjoy your March project!

Joel, I find that needing production insurance to be cost prohibitive to getting most locations. Most places I've talked to require it. How are you getting around that?
