I look for pots with a flat bottom. Raised centers are good for trapping heat, but if you try to fry anything in your pot, you don't want the oil, butter, or grease flowing away from the center, which it tends to do even with a flat bottom. I have successfully fried eggs over medium with olive oil in an Evernew 1300ml titanium pot on a Supercat stove with a tealight candle tin in the middle of the stove. Not guaranteed, but it can be done. Being a type two diabetic, I eat eggs for the protein, since I must get more of my calories from protein and fat than carbohydrates.

Lol! I bought 3 titanium pots in different sizes a few weeks ago, and was really disappointed when i saw that they ALL had raised centers, and realized how difficult it would be to stir in the bottom with a spatula... Now you bring up the oil issue too... Kinda wish i had returned them...

Toaks 750 is what I went with. REALLY looked into pots before I settled on that. 2 cup capacity. Pretty ergonomic handles. They stay in place. No rattle. Lid also has a tab that will sit flush or lock in the upright position to grab it easily when cooking. The handles can get hot (yes, I learned the hard way 🤦🏻‍♂️😂) and I’ve tossed around the idea of plasti dipping them but if you use your buff to pull it off the stove it’s a non issue

My 750 Snow Peak rattles... The other snow peaks I have, the handles are tight and take light force to move. They don't flap on their own. I think what we are seeing here is manufacturing tolerances... Which will always be a gamble unfortunately. If your handles rattle, and you can remove them... Bend the ends of the handles ever so slightly... No more rattle. Also, thanks for another great video Mr Matt!

Last year I bought the Windmaster stove from gossamer gear and love it. Little heavier than my BRS but worth it to me. I might try one of these lighter guage pots. I wonder if you go lighter then problems are created when trying to mold them. Thanks for the info

I'm a fan of a wide pot, which transfers heat to the contents better than a narrow cup. A big pot full of stuff that has to go somewhere in your pack anyhow doesn't really take up any more space than a little cup that can't hold as much, whether in your pack or out, and is much more versatile and efficient on the stove than a tall, narrow cup (and it's easier to stirr contents without spilling them).

Rattling handles? Use a hammer, anvil and center punch to slightly squash the handle housing just enough to create friction between the two loose parts.

I use a BRS stove but I don’t have a lid for my Toaks 650. Have you done any no-lid vs lid testing for boil times and fuel consumption?
@MattShafter
@MattShafter 5 років тому
Other people have and found that boils happen 30 seconds faster with a lid
@LaconianConcepts
@LaconianConcepts 3 роки тому
Faster boils (given equal valve release) = less fuel consumption = less fuel carried. I noticed right away that I was using less fuel when using a lid because I was coming home from 4 days winter trips above 7k ft (where I boil more often than most for hot drinks and my beloved Nalgene sleeping bag warmer) with half full 220g canisters. I used to pretty much empty them prior to acquiring a toaks 750ml with a lid. Once I got a more efficient stove (MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe) I was able to get by with a 110g canister for the same type of trip and bonus it nests inside the toaks. Hard to pony up for a more expensive stove but it’s worth it. While the BRS is incredibly light, that is the trade you make at the expense of efficiency... YMMV

Id actually want a thicker titanium, so i can cook food on it. Weight is not that much of an issue, as long as it is not overly heavy. If i were to go for a through hike, id go for one that i could do in my own pace, with the gear - and food - id want to bring. A couple of weeks ago i bought a 20kg/44pounds weighted vest (about 30% of my body weight), and im already starting to get used to this weight, so a couple days ago, i brought 5 additional kg of gear and water on a hike up a local mountain. This allows me to get some pretty good exercise from a relatively short hike, which is MUCH more practical than having to find the time and patience to hike much longer hikes, several times per week. I LOVE ultralight gear, but mostly because it allows me to bring some luxury items and "non ultralight" food, without making my backpack too heavy.

When you mentioned that lids are surprisingly heavy, you could've added that all mass-production companies skimp on the lid and make it of aluminum instead of titanium.

For me, the #1 thing is it has to have a "flat bottom" Snow peak does, I know others do as well, but so many TI pots do not. It is so annoying if you cook in your put to try and scrap food out of that ridge on the bottom, major no go for me. I want a pot that is easy to clean, none of my pots at home have a ridge on the bottom,.it's a poor design for a cook pot :-) Most of the other differences are small to me.

Did not know about the 0.4 vs 0.3 mm thickness. I wonder what my cheap Chinese made knock off 750 ml pot used? BTW, if you are in bear country, you do want to make noise. In Japan, many hikers carry a bear bell. Save that weight if you carry a mug with handles, LOL.

Pot durability is only one aspect to look at when talking about pot wall thicknesses. A pot being able to hold its shape is only one aspect of what a pot needs to be able to do, its primary purpose is to cook food well. In traditional cooking in a home kitchen typically pots/pans with heavier bottoms are going to perform better than thin bottom pots/pans. If you are only boiling water for your meals how well your pot distributes heat and hot spots probably isnt much of a concern to you. As someone who likes to do some occasional real cooking out the back country with fresh ingredient, I am hesitant to trust a super thin walled Ti pot like you are suggesting here. Burning food can be a real problem depending on your stove/pot setup and what you like to cook. Just something to consider when buy a pot. For the record I use a MSR titan kettle on a zelph fancee feast alcohol stove.

@TimoteoDelCielo
@TimoteoDelCielo 5 років тому
@@MattShafter it fits, but it just rests on it, and its top heavy. One of those litesmith bands is a must to keep that chatter down. I use a toaks 700 now with a ridge-line that fits on a cone windscreen. I'll be getting a CF lid. You brought up important considerations I wish I had thought of in the past... and some good ideas for new design. Good content.

thanks for your review! any of these shaking handles can be fixed very easily. you gently remove them out (don´t forget which is L and R) and gently bend one end to one side and the other to the opposite side a little (not up & down) . when you put them back, they won´t move again so easily:-) i ´d suggest to cover them with rc model fuel silicone hose before you put them back ukposts.info/have/v-deo/o6qXpqONpaiTtZ8.html best of luck!

@MattShafter
@MattShafter 5 років тому
I know it seems like alot of unnecessary thought, but the only way to get to a low baseweight but still have the things you need is you make decisions like this for the 35 items in your pack. It's also not about just "doing a pushup." Ask any career infantry guy, or NFL lineman how their knees are. Also, imagine you already do push ups and you just want to go further and faster, bring less food, see more things and still make time. Agreed though, I am a bit psycho in the gear picking department.
