If you want to tip someone. Tip the cook, the busboy, the janitor.

Here in Denmark it's very normalised that you DO NOT tip.

What’s frustrating to me about tipping culture is that tipping is expected even when you are given bad service. Why is it my job to pay your salary after receiving shitty service? The system is broken, and I am very sorry. The servers deserve much better than this, and should be getting paid fair wages. But the issue should be with the employer, not the patrons.

These companies should have the heart to pay their employees a little extra… They shouldn’t have to rely on the customers “tip” to survive.

This has always been a strange topic for everyone outside the US. I would tip something if I like the service but I would not be paying their salary instead of the proprietor 😄 this is insane. Yet you guys keep arguing 1:1 - customer:waiters. How about: Don't open a restaurant if you can't afford to pay your staff.

I just don't like the way it's presented as an obligation. I'd rather pay a higher menu price knowing the employees are getting a more decent base wage and save the tipping for actual gratuity for exemplary work.

I completely agree with the guy in the leather jacket. I think the main stream opinion goes against what he says but if you think about it, he is correct. The problem is not the tipper. The problem is the restaurant, not paying the workers enough and they want us to compensate the difference. Just pay the workers a fair wage and train them to be polite and everybody wins.

In my honest opinion about tipping, the only person that should be tipped is the person who actually made and cooked the food since their the one the ones who have to work in a hot kitchen everyday, but that's just me.

I do tip, but I am getting increasingly resentful of our tip-dependent consumer culture here in the USA. Every damn service requires a tip, and it’s gotten to the point that people turn down a request (such as for Instacart) if they feel the tip isn’t large enough. The man chasing the restaurant patrons down to DEMAND a tip is absolutely ridiculous. Of course it’s the decent thing to do to tip, but it’s absolutely ridiculous to chase people down for something that’s in essence OPTIONAL. His entitlement to harass them for money is mind-blowing.

Acting like you're entitled to a tip and the entire idea of tipping culture as it's practiced in the US is the most ludicrous thing.

If everyone stops tipping than the restaurant will have to pay more because servers will quit. Boom, problem solved. It's up to customers to stop this sherade.

Tip the cashier, tip the customer service you’re calling on your phone line, tip the IT person you’re calling to help you with IT things.

for me it isn't about not wanting to tip, it's about the fact that the servers deserve to go to work and know that no matter what happens they're coming home with a liveable wage. They should not have to rely on random customers to pay their salary so they can get their bills paid and put food in their fridge.

I tip but sometimes I don’t like to because the service didn’t seem deserving of it. The only thing I don’t like about tipping is the entitlement factor or getting something for nothing attitude that some waiters/ waitresses have. A tip should be looked upon as an award for going beyond what’s expected. Whereas, I think most of the time now, waiters and waitresses just look at it as something the customer is obligated to do. I don’t like the sense of entitlement that goes with getting paid a tip because you were able to serve someone their food without dropping the plate. That’s it. I’ve noticed too. If you don’t tip, servers give you dirty looks while you walk out, which is just rude. You shouldn’t be made to feel guilty. If you work in an establishment and have a problem with your wage or think you deserve more….find a new job for a company that pays you properly. Don’t have a job that relys on the public to pay you your wage. It shouldn’t be my responsibility as a customer to make sure you are paid enough to live to your life.

Yes, I lived in Italy for many years -- and I always appreciated that the servers didn't ask me, in a forced manor - every 10 minutes, "is everything okay?" Instead, they did their job in a very professional, courteous and respectful manor, and understood how to get their jobs done so they were basically invisible, so I could enjoy my time in the restaurant with the people that came with, as it should be. Additionally, I appreciate the Italian restaurant culture whereby the positioning of your silverware indicates (without speaking) whether you are finished with your meal or whether you are still working on your meal. As a note: parallel silverware on your plate (not touching the table) indicates you are finished, take my plate away. Whereas, silverware leaning on the plate and touching the table indicates you are still working on your food (do not take my plate away). See, no words required to indicate "are you done, can I take that away for you?". Brilliant.

I agree it would be stressful to be a server yet I don't think we should have to pay their wages. I'm in a field that has to meat others needs and wants, I don't get a tip

Can't believe why this idiotic tipping system is still alive. One of the reasons I don't even want to visit the US again. Servers should be paid livable wage by their employers, but somehow they have managed to shift the blame to customers.

I slave for my plumbing company , I make 15 /hr starting out and it's seriously dirty hard work, I never once expected or received a tip, someone putting food on a table can make 200 or more a day on tips plus their wage ,its ridiculous, im in the wrong line of work

Meanwhile in Australia, tipping is the exception, if you get a tip, you did a really good job and the client wanted to reward you for that. Here we actually get proper pay.

Probably going to get lit up for this but whatever. It's not a secret how the restaurant industry works and I don't appreciate having my morals questioned when it comes to tipping. I work in the automotive industry and was flat rate for almost 10 years before I went the independent route. I've had more lost wages due to lowered warranty times and free diagnosis to customers that comes straight out of my pocket along with paying for all my tools which is more or less worth close to $30-35k at this point. I have zero sympathy for wait staff when it comes to tips. Sorry not Sorry. I tip according to the service and experience. Nothing is guaranteed in life and neither are your tips.

Tipping is very straightforward in the word, tip, as it is adding something on top. If you've simply done your job idk why you deserve a tip. If you were awesome and went above and beyond average service, I'd gladly tip. Unfortunately we're guilted into it so business owners can have a false cost of operation to drive prices as low as possible to entice people to go there rather than where it's more expensive, I'd rather just pay more for my food to pay fair wages based on the caliber of restaurants: Fast Food = Entry = Minimum cost of living wage (not minimum wage) Chains/average sit down = Above average High End = Highest end of their scale Super tired of this

Why do the waiters feel like their specific job deserves extra compensation? It’s infuriating, I bet they don’t tip the bus driver, the person on the checkout at the store, the binmen etc. There are 1000’s of low paid jobs that people just do and don’t get tipped for, but for some reason it’s just expected that the person who brings out your food is special in some way and deserves to be paid by customers. It’s pure greed.

The problem is we are obligated to tip even for mediocre or even bad services. Some servers don't even smile.

I have never tipped when eating out or when getting delivery, I only have enough for my meal and that is it. Companies should be able the people that help keep it afloat. It shouldn't be up to the customer.

I think people forget that if your tips don’t cover what would be minimum wage your employer HAS to make up that difference. So you are making minimum wage and most servers make way above minimum due to tips.

In Italy we almost never tip, because the workers are already paid decent money, and the concept of tipping just does not exist, not even for taxi. But if you tip you better do it good...if I consume just a coffee and a croissant then 10% of that is maybe 1 dollar/euro? And this would be seen as insulting, not as tipping.

Im from Australia and just saw the story on TV. Here we DON’T tip at all, why? Cause employees get paid well. The average person might make $20-25AUD an hour, retail or restaurants for example. Because of that we earn a good wage so its not really necessary or even optional. If you’re working in the US and your job only pays you $2-3 an hour then why even take that job?! If you’re fully aware of the wage and have to rely on tips then thats a problem. The employer needs to pay you much much more. And tipping should just be an extra perk on top of that. To make the job even better. Like if you’re paid $15USD an hour and you serve a bunch of tables and the customers decide to give you an extra $20 per table thats awesome. But if not, thats ok cause you got $15 per hour for your shift. But what if its not busy that day, you’re getting paid $2-3 an hour as is, what.. are you gonna blame the customers. Not their fault, and its also not their fault you don’t get paid enough. Get another job that pays better. The US are living in the olden times. When I visited the US for the first time, I was shocked. Its not just restaurants, catching a Taxi and tour buses even. We weren’t aware of tipping and the Taxi driver got real angry. WTF, why should I pay you EXTRA for just doing your job. Were you chatty or extra nice, not really so why should that be rewarded. Waiters and waitresses, they take your order and bring it to you… so why is that worth my extra money?! Is that part of the job that hard? Shouldn’t I be tipping the chef for making it for me, they did all the hard work. McDonalds, you don’t need to tip there so why are restaurant staff more important? The staff at McDonalds work harder, I’ve seen them running around getting out 30 times more orders or even more then I would see at a restaurant within 10 minutes. Its all too much. And then there’s the system where you have to work out the math. I work hard but don’t get paid extra for doing my job and you shouldn’t either. I go out of my way to be extra helpful, not asking for handouts. America needs to adapt what other countries are doing like mine and pay your staff more, then there’s no reason to tip unless you want to. They could at the very least have a tip jar at every table and at the end of every night gather the cash altogether and distribute it out to all the staff so its all evened out. Im surprised Dr Phil didn’t mention other countries like Australia that don’t tip. Don’t get me started on extra tax on store prices. Get with the times American!

Entitled servers blaming entitled customers. If they really believe people should stay home rather than tip, you're basically asking for the erasure of your own job. Eating out is a luxury, not required. A waiter that refills drinks promptly and stays off his phone is more deserving of a tip than the waitress who ghosts her tables, regardless if they're salaried or not. But let's talk solutions. I have a couple of compromises: 1) pay the server staff a wage, but post a sign at the entrance declaring it to customers. That way all tips are voluntary and continue to be merit based. 2) wait staff make commission. Your earning potential is based on how well you multitask and ability to serve customers in a manner that ensures quick service. 3) do away with wait staff entirely and allow customers to pick up their meals from a window and refill their own drinks. Bartenders excluded. 4) invest in service robots that can bring meals to tables.

The two servers had 8 and 9 years in the industry. If it's a shitty deal find a better one. I don't like servers who feel they are entitled to a tip. In America you don't even have to be a pleasant person to work in the service industry.

I hate tipping too. But I tip whatever amount I like in restaurants. I don't follow the suggested tip % that's at the bottom of the check. Even in food courts where they dish out your food at the counter they expect tips, but I don't tip in this case! I don't tip on takeouts. I never use any delivery service like doordash cuz with the fee & the tips, they cost more than the food!

I’m done tipping a server or bartender who only makes $2 an hour. I refuse to tip fast food cashiers, baristas etc. I’ve even had people from movie theater employees, bus drivers and even online checkout pages asking for tips. That is where I smile and hit “no tip” without any guilt.

I love how people complain that being a server doesnt pay well yet chose that occupation - and the cook or chef in the back who went to culinary school and who doesnt get any tips and who actually provides a real service, not just delivering plates, makes less than these servers.

Surely IF the STATE or NATIONAL minimum wage is let say $7 an hour, how legally can your boss pay you below that amount even if you do get tips? Here in the UK we have a minimum wage structure by age, so a school leaver age 17 yrs old get the Minimum wage af £6.50 per hour reguardless of how much he or she gets in tips as a Waitress/Waiter as Tipping the Staff does NOT GET INCLUDED in our Minimum Wage struture which means at set ages you get more per hour or think of it as an ANNUAL Pay Rise on your Birthday. That same 17 yr old/school leaver will ALSO get a minimum of 4 weeks PAID Vacation time each year PLUS Mandated National Days OFF, ie 4 days PAID LEAVE at Easter 10 days PAID LEAVE at Christmas, PLUS 4 WEEKS PAID LEAVE to take as an when they want. I was a server for 3 years at Golden Coral. I was paid only 2.30 per hour and I had to declare my tips which i get for taxes. However, after taxes my paychecks were always 0 dollars. At first I felt bad telling people how much I got paid but I started answering the question because they are asking to decide how much to tip me. They were shocked that the only way I was living was being paid by the public not by the owner required to pay me. My hard work for tips should be a bonus and I would have still gone above to keep their drinks full, table cleaned as they eat, and bring anything they ask through out the meal. I think the owner making millions of dollars shouldn't have free labor especially in a place as golden coral or buffet setting because I had so many times people thought because I didn't bring food all I did was drinks and keep the table clean that I was getting minimum wage and they didn't tip thinking they didn't need to. I've heard the argument well then prices would go up to pay you and I think only if the owner is greedy then yes it might happen but i don't think it would happen with a honest employer. why should they get away with free labor when other businesses are required to pay their employees? Yes I should declare tips for taxes purposes but my paycheck should never be 0 dollars. I think its wrong that I stress about what I'm going to do when I only had 10 tables one night, 2 dollar to no tip per table, and start planning calculating if my bills will get paid on my paycheck alone which the answer was always no. Maybe the electric but nothing further. Thankfully I started educating people so weekends were always successful and compensated the bills but the system is wrong. I shouldn't have to educate people so I get tipped essentially guilt tripping them into tipping instead of recieving it only on the basis of giving them the meal experience they were looking for when they entered the restaurant.

We don't tip in India, service is part of their job, they are happy that customers coming and business running.

If you give "good" service, not just normal service, I can tip. If I'm paying this much for my food, it's because I expect a certain level of service. If you just meet that bare minimum, I'm not tipping. After I order, I usually ask, "How long will it take?" If you say a time, and you don't meet it or I have to remind you of our food. You're not getting a tip. Customers and service crew deserve better from the owners. Customers are getting socially blackmailed into tipping, and service crews are forced to play a game with random strangers to see if they can pay bills this month.

I went to Japan a few years ago. The first place i went to eat, i left a modest tip but the server chased me out of the restaurant saying ive left too much, and forced the money back into my hand. Eradicate tipping completely. Pay staff properly. Its rediculous. After all, you dont tip your nurse or road cleaner but theyre doing a service.

In Korea, some genius tried to import this tipping system. Consumers made a blacklist of restaurants and the businesses asking for tip. They all lost customers and had to cancel the system and had to pay AT LEAST MINIMUM WAGES to the workers. Korean delivery companies, similar to Grubhub, lost 50% in profit that they had to cancel the tipping system. I think America should follow that step.

Guy feels if u do a good job, u should be rewarded with a tip. Every job is like that where most people do good work and get their job done effectively. And many jobs don’t get tips

My biggest issue is tipping for takeout to someone who handed me food. I will not tip them before I get home and know I got the right food and it tastes good.
