"When the European Coal and Steel Community was founded in 1952, few predicted it would go on to become a 27-member-strong European Union. How have the European Communities evolved?
The history of European integration dates back to 1950, when the French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman presented a plan to coordinate West Germany's and France's, coal and steel production - a decision which was intended to bind the key economy sectors of former fierce enemies and prevent an outbreak of an economic war.
The EU kept evolving. Many institutional reforms were implemented in the currently-in force Treaty of Lisbon, signed in 2007.
This treaty streamlined the bloc's institutions by adopting a new decision-making system and establishing, among others, the post of a President of the European Council.
The treaty also transformed the EU into a single legal entity, allowing it to sign international treaties and join international organizations.
So what was behind these changes of the European Union, how will EU evolve in the years to come? Join Jan Darasz and his guest: Michał Bernat Centre for Europe, University of Warsaw in this episode of How We Got Here to learn answers to these and other questions
