Thanks for including the RTX 2070 Super in the charts. It's more useful than comparing only against the previous gen, since most people skip a gen or two. Most reviewers don't do this.

@@StunXPlayz I dont forget that, I love playing games non-competative and Raytracing is not worth it on Any setup there is, if you think loosing 25-30 fps in a game like for example Witcher 3 / Cyberpunk, then you havent tried with it on and off. Off is just so much better 👍

I have to disagree. Most of the time, VRAM is a non-issue unless you're gaming at 4k and in that case, you want something more than a 4070 Super which is targeted at 1440p. Also, since VRAM is a factor of the bus speed, you couldn't get 16G without changing the bus to 256-bit or worse, a pathetic 128-biy like the 4060.

Can someone please explain to me the reason we moved the goal posts from 60 fps to 120 fps? I mean, I don't understand how the 4060 Super with mixed High Ultra setings with RT on at 4K is around 60fps on average on MOST games and we are saying its not good.

As a 2070 super owner I'm worried about being memory limited before long again. Launch cyberpunk had significant out of memory stutters on 8gb. Just makes for such a bummer. I hope 12gb holds up better. Looks like the 4070s has the headroom for games to lower the frame rate but we'll see if vram keeps up.

@@clockworklegionaire2135 The 4060 ti came out two years after cyberpunk released. It never played _launch_ Cyberpunk 2077. They've also since patched vram usage multiple times. Similarly with Diablo 4 which also had vram issues with 8gb cards. The cores weren't the thing holding back performance at release with reasonable settings.

Great review. You're spot on when you mentioned this GPU's size, power efficiency, and performance per watt. This GPU is great for SFF builds. If the 4070 Super had 16GB VRAM, it would be a no brainer purchase for most PC gamers not willing to spend crazy money on 4070 Ti Super, 4080 Super, or 4090 (if they can find one).

@@unholydonuts Very strange to buy such an expensive graphics card only to have a 1080p monitor to go with it for 'many years'. You could max games that couldn't be maxed in 1440p, but people would argue that 1440p on medium looks better anyway. I was stuck on 1080p a looong time as a high fps is so important to me, doubt I would go back now. People want different things in the end of the day, what ever floats your boat 👍

So considering I currently have a 3070 Ti I should upgrade to 5070 Ti SUPER, duly noted, I like these simple rules in life. It should pair perfectly with cs2 at 1440p 480Hz considering the 4070 SUPER still dips at 240 frames in 1% low

IMO, people should stick to a simple rule: upgrade every other generation (typically 3-4 years apart these days) if you have the money but its also perfectly OK to upgrade every three generations since game development is so darn slow to catch up to GPU technology.

@@groenevinger3893I mean for a 100$ difference (if the super even stays at 600$ when reference prices are revealed) for the negligible performance gains overall, while also losing in certain games with better amd support. Meanwhile the 4 extra vram slots in the 7800xt would actually make this card more futureproof at a lower price. Though both cards are arguably the best 1440p cards on the market so I dont think anyone would be sad after picking either, or atleast they shouldnt be.

I'm still rocking the RTX 3070 and still can't really justify purchasing a card this generation. I really haven't run into any game that doesn't work well on it on high or ultra settings besides some of the recent AAA releases, which have been lackluster anyway.

I had a 3070 too and loved it. However, I began to see the writing on the wall with that small 8GB vram pool. Ended up selling it and paid the difference for a 7900 XTX

@@05DonnieB Yeah it seems most people are switching to team red and I don't blame em. That price to performance is insane. If Nvidia doesn't keep up in the next year or two I might be doing the same. Even then... I'm already maxing out my monitor in every game I care about so unless we see some massive change in the AAA space I think I'm set for another 4+ years.

@@giodegracia Look into the AI capabilities of Nvidia. I ended up with a 5700xt (which I got a good deal on at the start of covid) that can't play Alan Wake 2 because of mesh shaders and AMD not supporting them in that gen. The frame gen tech is going to be a big differentiator and coupled with the RT abilities all added up to the reason why I didn't go 7800xt. Even at $100 less it seems too expensive because it doesn't have these abilities.

The statement of being a 3090 3 1/2yrs later and significantly less in cost, shows Team Green is just hoarding chips for dollars instead of being the 'fan favorite'. I'm a 2 week past launch 3080 user and I love my card BUT I never considered going to the 40 serious once I saw the price to performance. Fuck that. I'll be going Team Red next upgrade and passing the 3080 to the editing PC. Thanks HC for the content and Mike for the great review.

Undervolt your card. Most rtx 3x00 series, you can drop the voltage by significant margin, drastically lowering temps. With maybe less than a 3% drop in performance.

Use frame cap in games. I've set 65 FPS on "eco" setting, 120 FPS global, and on Hyper RX no fps limit. There is no need to push 1000 fps in RTS games, for example 😁 On my nvidia 3070Ti laptop I've set 120 fps global cap and per game adjusted as needed, BF5 and COD without fps cap since it runs out of juice anyways 😅

Thanks, I know what I want next time I upgrade. I'm still using a 2060, but I only got it a few years ago during the messy bitcoin era of price inflations, and I'm not in any hurry to move on yet as modern games aren't doing it for me. The efficiency is the winning trait for me, no need to upgrade my PSU!

I've had my 1080ti since 2017 and I just ordered the 2070S today - the 1080ti was a very special card in longevity and raw power - still kicking ass 7 years later - it's still a pretty decent card to this day

The rtx 4070 super is 675 euro's over here compared to the 550 euro's 7800 xt. I might want to play some rt games, but the price increase and 12gb vram makes it really though. 7900 xt is around 790 euro's. So that aint cheap either. What do you think? Edit: Oh, and the 4070 ti super will be 900 freaking euro's msrp (all prices include vat btw)

@@keerthan7558 yeah I have a 4k 120hz panel so it's a hard choice. Both are sub optimal and really on upscaling/frame gen which nvidia does better. If it had 16gb vram (with a wider memory bus) it would be a winner. Now it's just so so, just like all the other cards around this price point.

I just picked one up and I'm going from a 3060 12G. The performance increase is real. If you're going from a 20XX series the performance would even be greater in some cases. For me, since I don't want to take out a loan for a 4090, this was a great upgrade and made it worthwhile going from a 3060.

o hay, thats exactly my situation. MY 3060 is just the base level one. not the Ti or anything. and its pretty weak. have to turn lots of specs down on games on my 27 inch monitor at 1440p. So im just wondering if the 4070 super is a pretty big upgrade? have you been happy with it?

@@Cryptorocker2000 I got the MSI 3 fan version. It's great! Keeps very cool and I have no issues turning up the settings including Ray Tracing in any game that supports it. I had the 12G version of the 3060 ... which was boost from the 8G version because of the bus speed ... and while it played games fine, I also had to turn down settings on some of them. I don''t like it when I buy a GPU only to find the increase was just slightly greater than my previous card. It feels like a ripoff and/or a poor decision. I don't have that problem with this upgrade. The performance increase is in your face. It's very noticeable for me and I don't see how anyone wouldn't notice it. Luck!

Your price comparison adjusted for inflation is a tad misleading. Consider that 2070 Super released over 4 years ago and that the new card has only 50% more VRAM, and that it is on a narrower bus, with almost negligible increase in memory bandwidth. So posing it like a bargain “like for like” is disingenuous. In context, it doesn’t look anywhere near as good a proposition, especially against the backdrop of specs which we know have a meaningful impact on performance. Back in 2019 8GB of VRAM for a 70 part was okay, but was 100% more than the 970 from 5 years before it. Really, it’s only a bargain if you set it against the ridiculous greedflation which has occurred in the intervening time, first with crypto, then with global supply issues. No two ways about it; we pay more now for less than before and somehow we should be happy for it.

It's mostly misleading because wage increases don't nearly come close to matching inflation and large companies like nvidia price gouging are literally significantly responsible for the recent high inflation rates.

Benchmarks look good...... except the 12GB VRAM coupled with the 192-bit bus should make people nervous for the future. YEAH, I guess if next year or something, you hit a VRAM wall in a game, you could upgrade again. But that costs money, time and hassle. Still not sure what I think. You'd want to run 1440p with good textures on this. How well will 12GB really hold up... hmmm

People willing to pay $600+ for a 12gb vram and 192-bit bus, already did it. And the only thing they are getting from nvidia for their fidelity, is a price cut that hurts they card resale. Honestly, I believe people will buy easily the 4070ti super if is priced at $600, but I believe that at $800, sales are not going to be great. Same thing with the 4080 super, people willing to pay $1,000 for a 15 gb card, already did it or got a 7900xtx instead... Hopefully the sales keep low and the prices will be more reasonable next gen

Good card, good price. Some people just have to complain. 3090 performance for 60% less money. If you use more than 12 gigs you'll have to bump up settings, when you bump up settings, frames will go under the 60 fps limit, killing your gaming experience, so much for that "extra" vram...

Imagine releasing a $599 gpu 4 years after a $699 gpu that has almost the same performance. The only one of these super cards that’s gonna be worth it is the 4080 super and its probably just gonna make used 4080s a great value

Agreed. Like I said there are two potential issues with a price drop under $550. A) It makes the RTX 4060 Ti look incredibly OVERPRICED and if you reduce the cost for that card NVIDIA would also need to cut the RTX 4060. A cascade effect. B) There's a distinct possibility NVIDIA will use the 4070 as discount bait for if / when AMD adjusts the RX 7800 XT's price.

I rather pay the 800 for the 4070ti super with 16gb and 256 bit bus and be good for 3-4 years than pay 600$ on the 4070 super with 12gb and 192 bit bus now and then have to upgrade later with games being more vram taxing.

I have a 4070 Ti and I will admit I would have been upset if the 4070 Super had matched it. With all the problems the 12VHPWR has caused I think Nvidia should be moving away from this connector rather than pushing it on even more GPUs.

@@zerocal76 Normally when people ask me questions on YT I go into defensive troll mode...but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and say that my dual setup handles CB2077 at 4k Ultra Performance good enough for me. And with FSR3 just around the corner I probably won't be upgrading anytime soon. At least 'till they're no longer supported by Nvidia, in which case I'm looking to get the higher-end Battlemage GPU from Intel, Lord Willing.

It's wild to see all these reviewers post positive headlines and titles about a 600$ 70 series card. Especially when it skimps on vram for the price and has a gutted memory bus, so that vram is getting choked anyways. I don't care what RTC cores it has if it still can't beat the price to performance of the fucking 1070 or earlier.

Time will tell. Because the 12GB 4070 Super is matching a 24GB 3090. In the end, if the underlying architecture can't take advantage of more memory and becomes the bottleneck, it doesn't matter if there's 12GB or 120GB, the results will be minimally impacted.

No, first they need to defeat their wafer limitations. Right now AMD has very little interest in competing in the consumer market since the bulk of their wafer allocation is being used for high margin Epyc parts.

Still overpriced and underpowered for what it is. 12GB of VRAM has no staying power when modern AAA games developed on consoles with 16GB of VRAM will be ported to PCs as-is, and game developers won't bother to optimize for anything less than that.

Our most accurate metric of what people are using is the Steam hardware charts and on there the most popular RX 7000 series card is the RX 7900 XT, sitting around #65 competing right against the mighty GT 730 with 0.33% share. The most popular AMD GPU is the RX 580. No one is abandoning NVIDIA. They play up AMD's marketing and then go and actually BUY an NVIDIA GPU.

Just a reminder everyone, 600$ for last gen 80series performance is not good value. We used to get that for 300$ in the 60 class, then we got it for 400$ with the 60ti last generation, and now we are paying 600$ for a 3080 12gb and being told “things are looking up”. Nah fam. I’m good.
