I love your use of visual symbolism, hand language, and way of organizing...plus your natural love of what you are doing is so wonderful I cannot express how much I value it. Have you ever taught teachers how to teach? What you do is special. I'm a visual/symbolic thinker. I need deliver in exactly this kin complex holistic manner. It;s rare to find. Have you ever taught teachers how to teach? I doubt most could do this regardless, but some might. It's beautiful. I'm a rather poor senior, si all I can do is spread the word and learn. I taught art as an art instructor. My approach was similar. Always learning though. Regardless, I am grateful to you. Thank you. I'm a subscriber with two different accounts. Sharing this.

Apparently I'm supposed to tell you Bruce sent me. Just wondering where it's best to start. You totally grabbed me with The Witcher. Edit: having now watched the entire video, I feel I have just been down the single nerdiest educational rabbit hole of my entire life. I say this as a person who once had a high energy physics fellowship at a superconducting cyclotron laboratory, so make of that what you will.

I had some guests at work speaking Gaelic to each other and I was able to understand most of what they were saying thanks to you! Next time I comment I hope I can do so in Gaelic 🙏🏻🙏🏻

I'm not sure if it's your teaching style or my genetic predisposition or both, but I'm picking up this language incredibly quickly. I'm going with your teaching style. I've taken some other language courses in university before, and they were entirely rote methods, and I took forever to learn anything. This way I'm picking up words and grammar very quickly. I so so so so appreciate everything you are doing here. Love it.

This is quite fast paced with minimal explanation of the grammatical point other than very helpful visual clues with your different coloured pens, but I think that actually works really well if you have a student building their vocabulary while already having a basic grasp of some gaelic rules. Really enjoyable, you’re a great teacher!

Jason, you're one of the best teachers I know. I just wanted to know what Gaelic is like (how to pronounce the names of the whiskies that I adore :-), but now I find myself watching the 4th video in full length. You're doing a great job. However, my first impression is that Gaelic orthography could use some revision. The sounds are all so different from their written image. Are there any rules one could stick to? Maybe you could make a video on that topic. Greetings from good old Germany

Am I wrongly thinking there's Welsh as in Cymraeg influences in the language? I know that pre-Roman times the Welsh were in parts of Southern Scotland - Ayrshire and Dumfriesshire. I would imagine they had a contribution to the language. Or are phrasings naturally that way in all Gaelic languages? I will check that rabbit hole soon. I like the videos Jason - they're an excellent way to learn our native tongue.

Glad you enjoy my videos, a charaid! Thanks for watching. 🙂 There are definitely some things that all the Celtic languages share to some degree. In my experience with Breton and Welsh, there are some shared words and also concepts. I bet a native Welsh speaker and/or linguist could tell us more. 🙂
@Amenweser
@Amenweser 5 місяців тому
You could be picking up similarities in them both being Celtic languages, and there may be Welsh influence. But one thing that I read is that Pictish was also a Brythonic Celtic language (like Welsh), and a lot of Pictish merged into what became Scottish Gaelic (goidelic Celtic). So it is possible you are picking up on that too.

Much appreciated as always. Rivia reminds me of something I’ve been meaning to ask: what happens about assigning a gender to place names in Gaelic? Presumably they need one from time to time for various grammatical reasons, but the dictionaries seem coy about it. Dwelly, for example, explicitly gives Glaschu and Pàislig as feminine, but gives no guidance for Sruighlea or Peairt. Can one make any default assumptions?
@josephatthecoop
@josephatthecoop 2 роки тому
This doesn’t answer your question directly and I am merely a beginning student, but it’s my understanding that all countries and languages are feminine by default. It makes me wonder if the principle extends down to smaller political units.

@GaelicwithJason Рік тому
Feasgar math! My Gaelic was very Nova Scotian way back when I started. I shifted it more towards Scottish patterns once I started my job over there and it's been more Scottish than Nova Scotian ever since. That being said, I'd love to brush up on my Cape Breton-isms. I've still got all my notes from my time over there. 😁 Long story short: the Gaelic I use in these videos is more Scottish than Nova Scotian. 🙂

So, “tha Geralt glè, glè làidir le chlaidheamh”...which is singular-sword, right? How might you say “with swords” -plural, or “with his [two] swords” -possessive? Is that, “le chlaidheamhan (aige)”?

Those would look like this: Tha e glè làidir le claidheamhan. Tha e glè làidir leis na claidheamhan aige. No need to add the extra H in claidheamh(an) here. 🙂
