The Work-From-Home Divide with Steven Davis | Policy Stories

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a significant increase in remote work opportunities, but these opportunities are unevenly distributed across the workforce. Employees with higher pay, more education, and more experience are much more likely to have the option to work from home, while those with lower pay, less education, and less experience rarely enjoy this benefit. To address the resulting tensions and perceptions of unfairness, managers should acknowledge the divide, align their own working arrangements with those of their employees, consider alternative options like a 4-day work week for onsite staff, and potentially offer one-time pay adjustments to compensate employees who cannot work remotely.

Fascinating. While I would not call the results unexpected, having hard data to back up suspicions allows policy to follow reality. Thank you for this.

This doesn’t seem to take into account expected working hours. High paying jobs often require 60+ hours per week while lower pay jobs are most often 40 hours per week. Anyone expected to work so many hours are likely to want some work from home days.

the types of work that can be done electronically via the internet can be done from home. While this is great, these are also largely the jobs that are susceptible to be replaced by AI or offshore resources. and working from home not only reduces one's expenses, but it also reduces the carbon footprint of the company.

Funny. I moved to working from home during the pandemic. Being an operational manager (needing to be on-site for a 27/7 operation) 2 hours a day in traffic and 10 hours in the office. No life. Since moving to working from home I'm now making 20k more per year than I was working at a brick and motor with WAY less stress. ♥️🇨🇦♥️

Choice should just be between you and your employer and that conversation should be based on your work output. It's much easier finishing off a written report at home for example. However, working from home isn't a perk to abuse nor is it a right to cling to. This whole debate comes down to trust. The employee should demonstrate, through good work, to the employer that they can trust them. The employer should recognise a well intentioned employee.

I don't think you mentioned how much money a company saves by letting people work from home - it is significant. And there's typically more productivity from remote workers. Surely those are good reasons to pay more for remote workers - no? I don't follow the rationale of the policy proposed in this video.

The stats show that demonstrating capabilities via education or experience affords greater leeway to work from home which is clearly fair. Agreed however that every worker needs to feel appreciated and mangers need to be good at that.

Not necessarily, take UPS for example, not so long ago they decided to call back in the office all their employees worldwide. Working in one of the few countries that had a union agreement regarding remote working, at least for 2024, I can still benefit from the advantages of working from home. Huge companies know they can benefit greatly from implementing remote working solutions, it's just that they simply won't invest in the necessary steps that such a change would require. Specifically worker's training and proper wage frameworks.

I'd really like to know the gender breakdown of those that work from home. I'd presume that there's disparity between them.

Truly, investing has changed my perspective on how one can succeed in life; working multiple jobs isn't the optimal way to attain financial freedom and unfortunately, we discover this later in life. Currently earn as much as 12 grand weekly and this has improved my financial life

Could we please pay employees for the expenses we incur working from home?

For most people, I'd say zero hours commuting and no fuel costs would offset most expenses. Eating lunch at home vs. going out is another, as is not having to buy a work wardrobe. The IRS will allow you to deduct home office expenses like phone/internet, and the square footage dedicated to work. Printer uses is also a deductible, although I'd gladly spring for toner and a couple reams of paper to avoid rush hour traffic every day.

Over 20% of government employees that work from home never even turn on their computers multiple days per week. Unless their job has actual deliverables that I can verify that they have done, no employee of mine is working from home.

I work in local gov can confirm. People here will argue tooth and claw with you if you suggest taking their WFH away. (Even to their bosses) And when they do they can proovebly be shown not doing their job (work not done). Oh but they can't be fired because government 🤡

What nonsense. There should be zero compensation for those who do not have the opportunity to WFH. If you would like to WFH, align your education and experience to get jobs that support it. Also, the more money you make, the more responsibility and accountability you have. Those at the upper end of the pay scale are not sitting at home twiddling their thumbs. They are working longer hours and companies know this.
