It has been roughly 3 years since I introduced English speaking
countries to one of the most unique stoves that I have ever seen and
used;
What I’m talking about is the Soto ST-320 Cassette Stove.
This Stove is Wildly different than 99% of camp Stoves that are out on the market and since I posted that video like I said 3 years ago I have continued to use this stove in just about every possible way imaginable in just about every form of conditions possible.
After all of this use, all of this testing these are my thoughts in a
summarized.
It’s so unique and performs so well - I absolutely love it!

I remember visiting Tokyo back in the 80's and being blown away by the cutting edge design of everyday objects. From scissors and flasks to fashion and now the toilets are becoming somewhat common in the US.

The US realized you can just sell the same thing forever and make it worse quality, and people will keep paying for it even if you increase the price. Why innovate?

Hey Luke, thanks for the video! I know this would take a LONG time, but if you ever get around to it, it would be awesome on your website if you made “top” lists for each item category. Like your picks for “Best overall stove, best budget stove” - that kinda thing. I wanted to look at the stoves you’ve reviewed and I think there was 70+ in the category. Even if I watched the videos on all of them, it’s still hard to gauge which are better performing than others. You’re the man with the experience, I’d love to see how you pit items against each other!

Hi everyone. Mine has just arrived in the post here in Australia. I ordered mine on eBay from one of the many vendors in Japan. I ordered it on December 8 and was notified estimated delivery would be December 18. This seemed impossible with the impending Christmas postal stampede. Anyway, it arrived on the appointed day by courier, and i am pleased to say, I love it. I couldnt get over how small the packaging was. Let alone the stove.... its tiny. I have a butane canister out in the garage. I am about to test it, but just looking at the quality, i know it will be ideal for my motorbike and car camping trips. I already have isopropane stoves for the colder months. PS. I only found and purchased this stove because of your reviews. Thank you so much 👍🏆

bought it out of curiosity, loving it for daily home use since it's perfect and efficient for heating small objects such as moka pots. Mostly use it for a single cup moka pot that's impossible to heat well through anything but camp stoves and a butane bottle lasts many, many cups.

Hi Luke! I'm so glad you did an update on this, and yes I'm going to say it too, COOL stove! I saw your preview three years ago, and the stove seemed SO interesting to me, I promised myself I would get one eventually. Sooo. . .last year I got one on Amazon. I think they were around $100 at that time, but I splurged and got one anyway! Everything you say about the stove is spot on! The case is NICE. The only experience that differs from yours is that my lighter has never failed to light the stove on the first hit. (unless I did something dumb, like turn the gas off after lighting instead of on!) I also use those covers on my butane cans. Luckily our Walmart does carry the butane cans, but are out of stock a lot. I know, I bought a couple myself! VERY reasonable! The only problem I seem to have is putting the burner on the can. I am going to try the method you used in this video! But I too, would for sure recommend this stove, especially since the price is much lower! If they released this stove in the U.S. I bet the price would come down even more.

One tip I have discovered with the stove is, when igniting leave the shield down to “capture” fuel vapor under it next to the igniter. As soon as it lights flip the shield up.

I bought this stove over a year ago based on a previous review of yours. I agree, the stove works great and I really like it. I built a coffee station (using a Stanley lunchbox) and this is my primary stove. When it gets colder I swap it out with a vintage Coleman single burner gas stove - I swap them based on the weather.

I'm on my second one, Luke, after seeing your review of them. It's lasted an entire year of motorcycle camping without issues! I will note that the first one I had, wound up with heavy winds pushing lit butane back down the system and lighting the button on fire. So to run it in 10+ mph winds, much less 20 or 30, you're going to need something as a wind break. Other than that, it's worked perfectly for me, up here in the Pacific Northwest!

Thanks for the expanded review. I've seen you use it in quite a few videos. It's such an interesting design. I like the folded form with the case. It would be easy to pack. No funny shapes. I like the cheap gas. I like the apparent stability. I have a few stoves from tin can alcohol to Esbit, a $15 Chinese "pocket rocket", an ooold Optimus 8R, and an older 3 burner Coleman. I love them all in different contexts, but that Soto I think might be the most useful and easiest to work with.

Thank you for this _excellent_ video. Based on your extended use of the stove, you gave a very thorough review including pros and cons. The following is totally IMHO. Looks like a well-designed, well-made, fairly rugged stove suitable for one to two persons in warm weather. Below 60 degrees Fahrenheit, use a different stove, including but not limited to Coleman fuel, propane, or campfire. Based on experiences I have had or witnessed over the past 60 years with a variety of stoves and fuels (butane, isobutane, propane, Coleman fuel, alcohol, Esbit, charcoal, campfire), I would restrict my dependence on this or any butane stove to warm weather only. Again, thank you for this _excellent_ video.

VERY cool. You can easily make a thermal can cover from reflectics and some gaffer's tape. The reason they reduced the BTU for this model is because if you trap too much heat under the pan, it can cause the fuel canister to explode. Encouraging the use of larger pots/pans is a problem. Better to limit the size so that the pot cannot extend over the fuel and cause a problem. Some stove designs have a heat driven disconnect that pops the fuel can off if overheated. I love Japanese engineering, and wish we could find more of it. I would love to see them create a similar catalytic heater for very small spaces and emergencies. Kovea, another great Japanese company, makes the Cupid stove, but honestly, even that is too big. After just a few minutes you have to shut it off, and then the cold comes back. Better to have a very small heat delivery that you can adjust and keep constant.

Something that is unique is one of a kind and cannot the compared to any other thing. No adjective such as more unique, less unique, or most unique can be applied to it. It is either unique or it isn't. I had a good English teacher who taught me that. She was unique. You can say most unusual.

A good rule of thumb (heuristic) is that pure butane stops useful vaporization at 32F (0C). If you are pedantic look for the vaporization pressure vs temperature curve. Best bet in colder weather is keep it under you jacket a while before use.

I use a canister stove daily, in winter I just sit the canister in some water as mine has a hose connecting it to the stove! That stops it icing up , works great. Maybe a wet cloth might do the same job, I found the water doesn't need to be warm either.

I have the same stove. Love it, but as you said, comfortable for one person; pushing it for two. That heat shield and the butane bottle's close proximity is what limits your pot/pan size to about a 3" radius. Pretty sure I've tried an adapter and extension to separate the bottle from the burner, but as I remember, that caused some sort of stabilty issue by removing the bottle as support point.

That little stove is cool: I have a newspaper grill. It comes in a box, 2 grills connected by two rings. It pulls out of the box reverse sets up, looking like a little trash can with holes in it. Do you take 12 full size sheets of newspaper wrinkle them up throw them inside open the grid things, put four burgers on it, close it, lift the grills like the top of the newspaper set the grill on it and it immediately start cooking. Noticing the insides cooked you just flip the thing over and when the newspapers are done burning the burgers are fully cooked and so juicy. 😋

Not just stoves but an overall “what would Luke choose?”kinda video. I’d think we all would be interested in what you would choose out of all the products you have tested.

Japanese camping equipment has been attention since 2015 as the comic book Laid-back Camping, going all heated up when the animation version live date back in 2018 which is told by a friend of mine who lived in Japan ten years ago and saw all of these happening. People in Japan suddenly interested in camping, whether solo camping or group camping, mixing up the traditional culture of the world's top-level customer service and thinking, and Japanese disciplines together, they got almost the best camping world. So envy all of these in Japan. Those unique lightweight and great designs, like the UNIFLAME foldable fire stand, 笑S (laugh's) foldable BBQ box etc, are very easy to find even I visited Japan last year in 2023 Feb, everywhere from 300 yen shops to outdoor stores, or maybe Muji also targeted the camping market. A friend of mine in Tokyo also joined some camping activities there and tried the foldable BBQ box, he states that just prepare small firewood and light it up, and you have a perfect 4-person size BBQ area safe for using wood fires and cooking with BBQ style.

This stove have been around Asia markets for many years and have been well welcomed . I have read in those years a report with photos that the user stated the burner head melted. It may be as Luke said ,there was a old version with higher output. Under certain circumstances the burner head overheated and melted. So Soto hake a new version with lower output.
