Few partnerships are conceived with the end in mind at the outset of a commitment. Yet the people we choose for our closest relationships will most surely impact how well the goals and values of our physical end will be met. With her life’s work focusing on matters of intimacy, communication and the human condition, psychotherapist Esther Perel delves into the nature of the lifelong need for connection even as serious illness challenges personal notions of fidelity, companionship and identity.

I had an old scout volunteer that had alzheimer's and I totally know what she means when she talks about “it provides continuity of their story and brings them back together” he was mostly gone but you go talk to him about scouting and he was alive as ever and had so many memories. It was actually very touching. Much like those two men she talked about.

Hi Esther, that was a wonderful speech. It covered issues that simultaneously, for two different reasons, are close to my heart and you addressed those two reasons in your presentation. Thankyou for sharing your insight and legitimising the topic. Kind regards, Eleonora.

I enjoy her talks even if I am not in the same place of many, but much of her talks touch us all in one way or another. Thank you Dr. Esther Perel.

You took a huge step with honesty. I believe that when you find someone who can handle that and engage at that level, they will have passed the first cut. The ability to allow growth and other forms of change within a relationship is also crucial. That was 2 years ago. I hope that things are working out. These have been tough years for communication.

Good afternoon. I hope everyone is well. 2 years ago and before that I was finding out things about myself and realizing I was not the only one in the relationship. Since then I have started working on myself. I feel better now.

Wow! Ester Perel, great talk and looking wonderful. Touching story with your father. I have one comment/question. Isn't there an age (in a person's life) where he/she should stop being so focused on his/her needs? Is being married for a longer while, having children, maybe even grandchildren and losing attraction for your mate not simply non-pathologically natural? Isn't it a unnesecary to persue you own "precious" needs when it's actually time to give others (and thus possibly to fill the emptiness)?

The loosing desire part gets me because it’s the woman who tend to show a decline in desire , the men tend not to, unless they have an insecure attatchment style. All other things remaining equal of course.
@IEVAKambarovaite
@IEVAKambarovaite 4 роки тому
@@DaveE99 very often women show the decline in desire because they're simply bored of the same routine, so they can't be asked to go over that again. That's why I like Esther's work. She talks about the otherness and the fantasies in the most beautiful way.

I was raised to be a strong woman. I can do hard labor, and then get dressed to the nines and be demure. BUT I was taught the man should be strong as well and the protector and leader. Unfortunately my husband was not taught to be strong or to be a leader. He was taught to do as mom and dad said. Period. As a result, he has learned little about being a man. He is a fantastic son, worker and sibling. He is not a great husband or father. He often asks me...what do want me to do? My answer is always...I want you to know what to do.

Have you ever thought that your definition of what it means to be a man is the real problem here?
@realiti773

I agree with James. What if he expects more from you as his definition of a wife ?
@pickles432noname6
@pickles432noname6 4 роки тому
He represented himself as a man who wanted a wife, and a man who wanted children. He hasn’t had the bravery or confidence to have either. And his definition of a wife seems to be the definition of a mother. Probably because his mother acted liked a mother to his dad. She belittled his dad, and treated him like a child. I was in my early 20’s when I married, so I didn’t see the screwed up psychology he was raised with. I’m now in my 40’s, and it’s pretty clear. He was raised to serve his family of origin, not the family he created.

@@pickles432noname6 I think a little compassion toward your husband would make a big difference. Sounds like you are doing the same thing by belittling and demeaning your husband. Do you really expect a man who grew up with screwed up gender roles to act completely differently when he marries you?
@blinkmejosh

@@jamesbow5916 Well said James. If I may add, @Pickles, you married him because...? Why must the husband be that role? Who says the wife cant be that person?

It's not "Till death do we part". That would mean we split up until we die. It is "Till death do us part" i.e. "until death separates us" with a free word order.
