Andrew Weil, M.D., is a world-renowned leader and pioneer in the field of integrative medicine, a healing-oriented approach to health care that encompasses body, mind, and spirit.
After completing a medical internship at Mt. Zion Hospital in San Francisco, he worked a year with the National Institute of Mental Health, then wrote his first book, The Natural Mind. From 1971-1975, as a Fellow of the Institute of Current World Affairs, Dr. Weil traveled widely in North and South America and Africa collecting information on drug use in other cultures, medicinal plants, and alternative methods of treating disease. From 1971-1984 he was on the research staff of the Harvard Botanical Museum and conducted investigations of medicinal and psychoactive plants
Combining a Harvard education and a lifetime of practicing natural and preventive medicine, Dr. Weil is the founder and director of the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona, where he also holds the Lovell-Jones Endowed Chair in Integrative Rheumatology and is Clinical Professor of Medicine and Professor of Public Health. The Center is the leading effort in the world to develop a comprehensive curriculum in integrative medicine. Graduates serve as directors of integrative medicine programs throughout the United States, and through its fellowship, the Center is now training doctors and nurse practitioners around the world.
Dr. Weil is an internationally recognized expert for his views on leading a healthy lifestyle, his philosophy of healthy aging, and his critique of the future of medicine and health care. Dr. Weil writes a monthly column for Prevention magazine. A frequent lecturer and guest on talk shows, Dr. Weil is an internationally recognized expert on medicinal plants, alternative medicine, and the reform of medical education.
In this enlightening episode, Dr. Weil and I discuss the foods and habits we need to optimize our mental and physical health. I learned so much about the danger of inflammatory diseases, how we can treat and prevent them, and about the root cause of most medical problems. You don’t want to miss this episode!

No pork; no sugar; no white flour. So helpful - just cutting those 3 things! And most importantly, living for Jesus. Faith in Him is how we receive ETERNAL life (in addition to abundant life on this side - John 10:10).

When I turned 50 I decided to change my life mostly through spirituality and better diet and it’s working. I’m 56 now and by cutting out sugars and processed foods and eating whole grains and meditating and giving gratitude to the universe, all of my previous ailments went away and I feel better now than any other time in my adult life.

My grandmother passed on this year at 99 just shy away from 100 years. She was in Malawi. At 99 she was doing everything by herself, living in her own house, attending to her own needs like bathing, feeding etc. Her eyesight was good, memory sharp and hearing not too bad. She never used hearing aids but one had to speak louder around her especially in the last five years but could hold a conversation. Since I have known her, she only had one proper meal ( lunch) and in the evening she would have a cup of tea. She worked ( farming and was an entrepreneur all her life building small houses for rent until her dying day, guess this helped her as well).

As humans we have certain species specific needs: - Community - Daily sufficient movement (lots of walking and some cardiovascular and strength training) - Being outdoors (sunshine and connecting to the earth through our skin) - Circadian rhythm (rising with sun; going to bed after sunset) - Proper nutrition (locally grown organic foods and high quality animal foods such as red meat, organs, unpasteurised milk and cheese) - A meaningful existence (something to live for other than yourself; giving to others; gratitude) - Proper sleep Its a simple but not so easy recipe in today's world.

One thing I never forgot and always repeat to other people - besides food, nutrition, exercise, meditation, and medicine, make ART, MUSIC and NATURE some part of your life - so very true, Dr. Weil's words ~ (Spirituality helps too, if you are open to that and other things, too). I Iove his philosophy on overall health - everything he presents is backed up by a lot of research and he still respects traditional paths when they work best. Glad to hear he is still so active - great interview! Thanks for this!

@@petecarroll3949 yes you’re right. However mind-body medicine is helpful for pain that linger long past the time it should’ve taken for it to heal. Sometimes nerves get caught in this chronic looping of pain because of neural pathways constantly firing. Mind-body medicine helps break those repetitive cycles. For acute pain from injuries or infections or injuries etc., you obviously need to treat those with actual medicine. I have an incurable condition that affects my nerves and I was told I would be essentially disabled by this forever because there’s no real treatment other than painkillers. In my career in nursing Intensive care 25 years, long term care 4, hospice 9, used what my nursing instructor said “Ask a patient in pain, are you ready to be pain free? touching patents arm gently. Do deep breathing in through nose out through mouth completely. “ Miraculously most were pain free and no meds needed. Many dozed off and slept, awakening relaxed and refreshed.

I had a skin cancer on my back go from nothing to the size of a pencil eraser in about 3 weeks- right before the dreaded Christmas dinner with my dysfunctional and abusive family. I had it cut out on the 23rd Dec and also cut all contact with those horrid people. Was a huge wake-up call. I've always lived a clean and natural life but the family was the cause of eczema, sciatica, migraines, insomnia, anxiety. I feel like a pre-teen again without them.

You don't have to be a well educated person to understand this. When my sons were younger, about 30 to 35 years ago , when they would get hurt , I would hold them imediately and say the pain is going away. This was instinctively, and the pain would go away. This was way before the body mind connection. The mind is an incredible tool

Child of the 60s here: environmentalist, fitness enthusiast, and health professional. I've been a fan of Dr. Wile for decades...and refer to my small collection of his books often. Dude knows his stuff....and he has a talent for acquiring the information a lot of us would seek if we had the time and connections that he has. Learning from him has been a great asset to my life. I am now in my mid-60s....and look and feel great: get constant comments from people who think l'm still 40. I am OK with that!!! LOL 😆 👌 GREAT to see Dr. Weil here in interview on YT.... he is always well worth the listen!!! I always respect a person who is devoted to wellness... AND "practices what they preach".

@@stanleyhebda1976 ...LOL!!! Have to admit l have not heard that theory....but l do know that the thought of "younger bacteria" seems unlikely in the first place because individual bacteria cells do not tend to have long life-spans to begin with anyway. I'm thinking that theory is somewhat "half-baked"...

@@jerseystotler3615 ... There really "is something" to the "YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT" Theory. I am not a strict vegetarian... but not much of a meat eater either. I will eat some poultry now and then (hopefully "free range")...some fish about weekly...and a small portion of red meat maybe about monthly. If l have a "vice" it would be my love of cheese: BUT l do try to achieve moderation and balance in all things. So far my sixties feel a lot like my thirties...no wrinkles yet either. I am also a former tennis player and endurance culyclist: so l am still also skating also on those benefits: with continued more moderate activities. All in all: not a bad way to live!! ENJOY!!!

I grew up in 60s and 70s and my parents didn't trot to the doctor constantly. They had an arsenal of medicines and home remedies they knew how to apply. Frankly if you did feel it prudent to check with a doctor, he would confirm which remedies to apply. FACT doctors would tell people to do home remedies because they work, but the doctors would check out things to be sure it wasn't more serious (like pneumonia or appendicitis). And then send parents home with instructions on what natural remedies to use (poultices, inhalants, salves, tinctures, solutions etc.) Doctors used and prescribed naturopathic remedies UNTIL pharmaceuticals started making drugs that treated symptoms instead of being curative. Med schools started letting pharmaceuticals companies rewrite the text books and control what is being taught or not taught... apparently this dates back a ways. This is why my parents avoided doctors and went only to older doctors. Today's doctors have been taught to consider those things "wives tales" and a muttleheaded, hysterical, anti-female persona has been attached to home remedies.
