This project is based on an idea that is so dumb that other than as a joke, nobody would ever try. Keep in mind the reason he is doing this is to gain experience to do it with a bus. Not only is the bus far too heavy, it has the aerodynamics of a piece of plywood facing the wind. Worse still, he's not going to be driving it 20 miles a day at low speed picking up kids within a limited circle, but taking it on multi-state highway speed road trips carrying vehicles. This bus is going weigh a lot. Between the weight and the poor aerodynamics, this thing is going to need A LOT of batteries. The only good thing is, I believe, he is never going to finish the bus. The bus will be scrapped before it will be completed. He has had the bus for years and has done next to nothing on it. Next month it will be 4 years since he introduced the bus on the channel. (Mar 21, 2019). He has done almost nothing on the bus since. His handling of the project has been terrible. He should stop taking on more projects until the bus is complete as a diesel bus. Only after all the details are worked out (assuming he finishes the bus at all) should he be considering an EV swap.

Why would anybody be a fan of such a generic.. trash car that people litreally only buy because of the brand it sits behind... in saying that Ford is about as american as an Aussie Outback steakhouse is in america. you'll find it's more european then american these days considering how ford mostly produce cars to markets like England, Germany, France ect ect. Even in those countries... they don't have Avid fans like they do in the U.S
@MrGFG003
@MrGFG003 Рік тому
@@UKpostsHandlesAreStupid There was a time when the pre-2013 Escapes were sold with 4WD, manual transmission and considerable reliable engines with decent performance and gas mileage, and had quite an interesting ground clearance and offroad capabilities, contrary to the things 2013+ Escapes might be able to do, particularly with the 2017+ EcoBoost engines... I used to be an Escape fan until I decided to buy a brand new 2018 with EcoBoost... man, what a mistake that was... it's been 6 months since I took it to the dealer with the infamous coolant leak only to find out that the actual piston head cracked, and even with the replacement engine, the thing just doesn't stop having issues. I'm selling it as I found a cheap 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis with low mileage just under $2k USD, and the thing is almost mint condition. They are selling it because gas prices, but the economy you can get from those Panther-based cars can easily match and outperform that of a current gen 2.0 4-banger turbocharged gasoline engine.

Keep the diesel, find a generator to hook it to. If you haven't already, look into Edison motors. If you talked to those guys, I'm pretty sure they'd be more than willing to help you out with some ideas or leads on parts to make a "range extender" out of the c7

Your videos are really warming me up to the idea of electric cars. Until now I percieved them as locked down, app connected toys for soulless city snobs. The whole DIY thing is very important to me when it comes to cars and you are demonstating that its possible for a regular hobbyist.

I believe a camper bus should have a combustion engine for flexibility. Especially if you want to go deep in remote areas. You can always carry a gas can. Not sure if you can carry electricity the same way. Otherwise, the idea is cool. Good job with the projects, I love them and your sense of humor

Have to say, you are going after this project like a pro! So glad to see you up & running full-tilt on this project. When you DO get this thing all put together, you might want to consider putting some type of rollcage inside. It will be a lethal weapon when completed.

The modified support bracket at 13:00 is undersized for that weight. It's OK in static loading, but will probably buckle after some good bumps. The diagonals will tear at the center weld points because of the trimming to clear the bolt. If you flip the support upside down and compare it to a typical roof truss for a house, you'll know to add three angles to each side in a zig zag pattern. Add a third frame bolt over the gearbox support point, because only 1 frame bolt on each side is probably not enough. You could bridge the tire well gap with a 4" channel and center bolt to that. LOL I have that exact Sport model 02 Ford Escape. Black, roof rack, tail mini hitch, automatic version. I retired it at 320k miles a few years ago. It's a good car!

Came here to say something along these lines. Not enough triangulation to prevent bending under enough load and twisting. Particularly concerned in that spot where Robert cut off the angled sections of the brackets. Needs a lot more reinforcement to hold up. Also not convinced those thin cylindrical standoffs will spread the load - wouldn't be surprised if they punch into the frame. Extending the bracket to the second hitch mounts in front will give it a fighting chance.

You're doing a great job . I have a tip that may help you on the future with your captered nut Dilemma. Drill an oversized hole where you need tge nut. Far bigger than the nut itself. Weld a nut to a steel plate. Weld the steel plate to the crossmember, what have you. Problem solved. 😊

as a welder the rear mount of the front motor might give you trouble, these ford escapes have notoriously thin sheet metal. even though you appear to be using 3/16 or 1/4 but that doesn't change the strength of what it's welded to, my recommendation would be to have a u shaped scab plate follow the contour of the subframe to spread the load, this wouldn't need to be continuously welded because that would induce warping and a stitch would be more beneficial. I believe this would better spread load to existing structures, as for the rear the ends of the angle iron should be gusseted away from your mounting hardware 1/8" mild steel will absolutely twist like taffy under a hard launch. one other thing is to make sure that even though you want penetration and a good size weld, you absolutely do not need to throw a 1/4 in of weld on 1/8 in hrpo you will have a bad time, the key is to understand how much heat you are putting into your weldment and for how long. The key is not to overweld, more weld more better is not what works. good luck on the escape/bus
