You forgot to mention that in Edison's later years: he also became somewhat unhinged, believing he was being haunted by the spirits of the animals that he electrocuted (including an elephant).

As most geniuses, Tesla was underrated during his time, mainly because nobody can understand his genius. Good thing he is now known, and a consolation for him that all he was, was not in vain, like the life he lived and sadly how he died.

If you go read enough history Tesla invented the radio first. In modern times it's commonly been re-accredited to him. And he had millions of other inventions that were not discussing here including the Tesla valve which is being reinvestigated today for water and fluid flow and it's proving out to be better than anything we've designed in the computer age.

Incidentally, the dual-phase AC systems found in most of the Americas, Japan and Italy are modifications of Edison’s DC system of positive, negative and neutral lines. This setup is also used for higher voltage transmission globally, as it doubles the total voltage while keeping the line voltage difference from 0 smaller, increasing safety.

Nikola Tesla wrote an amazing autobiography titled My Inventions, it’s a short book but it’s witty and worth the read. I adore Tesla and all of his strange and quirky ways. People often make fun of him for his love of pigeons and one in particular which he nursed back to health. He said he loved her as a wife probably because he was a lonely man who never found love or married, which is kinda sad but not nearly as sad as his psychopathic rival who electrocuted cats, dogs, horses and an elephant in public only to prove himself wrong with D/C. Fuck Edison, team Tesla forever!!!

Oddly, and somewhat ironically, the extremely high-voltage transmission lines of the Pacific Intertie, which are over 500 kV, are DC lines. Similar systems are in service in Europe and some locations of the British Isles. The experiment engineering was conducted in laboratories on Hat Creek in Northeastern California.

My grandfather, born in 1903, mentioned to me while we watched Andy Rooney playing Edison in a movie. Edison was not a nice man. For my grandfather to make that statement, I remembered it. Only time I ever remember him saying anything negative about someone.

Let's be clear here, Edison's so-called inventions were few and far between. He was fortunate enough to start that laboratory and hire young brilliant people who actually did the inventions that working under Edison was able to tale the patent and most of the credit. On the other hand, Tesla found himself unselfishly working for Edison improving many of the companies inventions and other cases thefts, and came up with many of his own inventions. The fact that Edison is only being called out now is that he was a cruel man and used 100's of brilliant people's ideas as his own. The additional fact that he electrocuted 100's of animals in public to try a scare the world away from alternating current should have had him hung in the city square. The light bulb that Telsa developed for his Westinghouse generators were far superior to the DC lightbulbs that Edison was producing for even a 6-year-old could make those today. Tesla was especially gifted and if he did not have to deal with mobster Edison and his goons doing everything to get rid of this country could have had a great many developments. In short, Edison was lying, stealing mob, scumbag.

I'm subscribed to this channel for a long time now.. I'm from Serbia, and I had only one American in my house as a guest.. And he never heard about Tesla.. I'm electrical engineer.. My high school was named Nikola Tesla in Belgrade.. I remember when I was in elementary school.. Going to National competition in physics.. I've got a book about Nikola Tesla.. The point is.. How the F... You guys don't appreciate Tesla?? And don't learn in school about this dude? And Einstein is the greatest mind in history?! Tesla Is above everyone!

My understanding is that Eddison employed people to research stuff and then claimed the inventions as his own because of the way he had written the employment contract. I believe he even requested Tesla help him with a project ,promising to pay him a large sum and then when Tesla produced the gadget, laughed at him and told him he had been joking while still walking away with the design.

Don't forget that Tesla's 3 phase AC system worked from the box. And it still works in it's original design .Modern tech has brought a lot of improvements (remote controlling, higher transport voltages,more efficient transformers etc), but around the world you still have AC generators 100 years old connected to the grid. As for AC motor , Tesla didn't invent the first one.He invented 3 phase asynchronous motor , one that is still used in it's original design. That motor was and is the workhorse of the industry. Tesla was a nutty personality , but his intentions were good and with vision of improving the life of humanity , not his own pocket.

Tesla developed the AC systems and that was a stroke of genius. AC can be transmitted with little limitations of long distance. But later in life Tesla developed a fixation to deliver power to customer wirelessly. In his view, permanent lightinings were traversing the sky delivering power. Another aspect of Edison's legacy is the existence of Hollywood as the centre of movie production. Originally based in the New York area, movie companies would often have their equipment destroyed by goon squads sent out by Edison, who felt he should be getting royalties for every movie made with "his" camera invention, even though he only altered the design of the originals. Attempting to get as far away from Edison as possible, early movie companies discovered California was a good distance from him and his marauders, but also the weather was much more agreeable to outdoor filming. The orange orchard that was the future Hollywood was close enough to the city of Los Angeles for convenience but also far enough away for more natural outdoor shooting areas that genres such as the western needed. At least until the arrival of sound in film, anyway.

Hang on, so you give Edison credit for the first commercially viable incandescent bulb, but Tesla merely improved things other people did a little. Because someone already built an AC generator. Generator. Not motor, generator. Not really commercially viable, because there were no useful AC motors at that time, or indeed at all until Nikola Tesla invented the multi-phase AC motor. Tesla's invention of the multi-phase AC motor made the modern world possible!

Edison didn't even invent the lightbulb, he invented using cardboard as a filiment. The idea for using an electricuted filament to produce light was already out there. All he did was try out some materials to get a viable one, repeatedly trial-and-erroring like a definition of insanity, and got lucky.

One of Tesla's first obsessions was the brushless motor, which wasn't necessarily thought out as an AC motor.

I saw so much negativity toward Tesla on Quora, something in the line of “he’s fake, he’s overrated, or he stole others’ credit”, so I never paid attention to the guy. But man, he’s such an honest, smart, integrity man. He could be Bill Gate or Elon Musk if he was not such an honest person.

Ultimately the biggest winner in all of this was JP Morgan. He extorted Westinghouse out of the patents.

One of the oddities of this entire history is that during the 20th PG&E, working to increase power transmissions over very long distances. This ultimately led to the construction of the Pacific Intertie. What is ironic is that in those huge transmission lines, which carry power at half-million-megawatts or more, are DC, not AC.

Edison stole all of his ideas. Tesla did not.

I believe the story goes that Tesla and Westinghouse were going to use Edison's incandescent bulbs at the fair, but Edison refused to allow them to be sold to then, so Tesla and Westinghouse had to create their own incandescent bulb that wouldn't violate Edison's patents. Tesla also had a large display of phosphorescent (early fluorescent lamps) at the fair. As for radio it depends on what you consider "radio". A bunch of people (Telsa, Marconi, Hertz, Popov, etc.) were all working on this at nearly the same time. It really depends on your definition and who got to the patent office first... Tesla did demonstrate and patent before Marconi in the US (1900), but Marconi did have a UK patent in 1897 for spark-gap transmission - although that appears to really be all or mostly Popov's work). Marconi's patents subsequent patents in the US after 1900 were, rejected by the patent office for relying too much on Tesla's work until (apparently) political pressure was brought on the patent office to give Marconi credit for the radio four years after Tesla's 1900 patents. However as early as 1895 Marconi was wirelessly sending/receiving spark-gap transmissions over a mile and even Edison had a patent on a wireless telegraph in 1885 that was capable of very short distances (not very practical). Telsa wasn't really focused on wireless communication, but instead, wireless energy transfer (although he noted in 1893 that it could be used for communication as well). The real benefit that Tesla brough to radio was the concept of the tuned circuit/resonance that is key to the Tesla coil. Telsa even created the world's first remote control boat and demonstrated it in 1898.

@5:00 nice Friends reference 😂 As for Edison, he wasn't an inventor but an investitor, and a pretty shady one. Ie: the 1st movie camera. His was designed by one of his employee in 1891, a couple of month after the disappereance of Louis Le Prince who had built a working camera by the end of 1890. His son was even asked to testify against Edison for the american mutoscope company over when his father invented his camera.

More oddities... Tesla also invented a practical incandescent bulb with a nearly unlimited life because it had no filament! It consisted of a chunk of carborundum - silicon carbide - a material that had only recently been created in an arc furnace. The carborundum pellet was mounted on an otherwise insulated electrode and sealed in a nearly evacuated glass bulb. When excited by a tesla coil (naturally) the molecules in the bulb would repeatedly hammer the carborundum pellet, heating it to incandescence that could be dazzling. How did Westinghouse make a fortune in railroads? He invented the air brake, a pre-engaged braking system that was released by air pressure. No longer did brakemen have to leap from car to car in all weather and lighting in order to set or release brakes on each car.

now we get to enjoy the results of both Edison's DC and Tesla's AC. Our homes are packed full of AC-DC converters, which step down 120/240v to a lower DC voltage for our phones, computers, and smaller electronics. AC has it's advantages, but DC is very needed to take advantage of all of them.
