Living Big In A Tiny House

Living Big In A Tiny House

День тому

Growing older is a gift. Unfortunately that gift also comes with it’s own burdens, often meaning a lack of mobility and thus a loss of independence. This spectacular tiny house design has helped to give mobility and independence back to one very special lady though, through some very clever small space design to create an elderly, disability and mobility friendly tiny house on wheels.
Support our show: / livingbig
This tiny house has many elderly / disability friendly features which helps to make this tiny home a very liveable space. These features include design aspects such as ramps, reinforced walls for secure hand rails, and an accessibility toilet and shower. Care was taken to ensure there are zero trip hazards in the home and the dimensions of the home were even designed around the ability to use a wheelchair in the tiny house if need be.

For those who have disabilities or mobility issues, one of the best things about a tiny house on wheels is that you can design it to your specific needs. In this case, Merle has a home where she is warm and comfortable, but most importantly, a house which has given her back her independence and dramatically increased her quality of life.
This one’s a real heart-warming tiny house story. If only we could all be as fortunate as Merle in our ‘more mature’ years. I hope you enjoy it!

I am electric wheelchair reliant. This tiny home is not disability "accessible" in ANY way. The ramp should have 1" of fall per foot. If damp, my wheelchair would never in a million years get up that ramp. Also, the ledge on which the mattress lies should be flush with the mattress, the kitchen shelves are too high to reach from a wheelchair, a wheelchair could never get through that narrow hallway and through the tiny bathroom doorway, there would be no way to get to the shower chair...I give this tiny home an "F" for accessibility.

@@lisad2701 What is accessible to you also isn’t perfect for other people. There is no one singular standard for disability as someone who has a brother in a wheelchair over 6’3… He would most likely think whatever you see as disability friendly not at all so for him personally… So whatever you design yourself would be an F from him. 🙄 You really don’t have to be so negative and see your way as the only correct one. There is no gold standard when it comes to the challenges people face and how they can be remedied.

@@lisad2701 Agree 100%,I live in Ireland. There are grants available for building an accessible home, however this ramp would definitely not pass. I feel in the wet weather, a crutch, stick,or wheelchair would flip over. A bit more common sense would have made it better. Wishing everyone well in 22'.

I think it also says a lot about Merle. Having a great relationship throughout life makes looking after your parents or in-laws a privilege rather than a chore. We, hubby and I decided to live with his mum after his dad passed away. All her friends warned her that she would be unhappy having to living with the daughter-in-law. To their surprise, my nearly 90 year old mum-in-law and I love each other dearly and enjoy sharing our house. She was a great mum and is a loving grandma who now needs a little assistance but doesn’t want to lose her independence. Perfect solution. What a lovely episode

As a past caregiver for the elderly, I think I can help you here - I have witnessed many adult children place their parents into a care facility, thinking that - even though these homes look lovely from the outside, it is not a good choice for every parent, to lose their independence and have to be placed into an unfavorable environment. One thing I can make clear is how ambulatory are the aging parents? There are nurse aids that can come into the home and care for the parent when time comes that the person can no longer care for their own self. There was once such situation where the aging couple - one had a stroke, and the other parent was so distraught and tired from caring for the other partner, that this person could not keep up the housework - for that reason alone, the adult child put both parents into a facility, sold all their belongings and the house was sold next. My heart broke for this couple, because they did not wish to be placed into a care facility - as I mentioned, it was only the housework that was left unattended. Story goes, that both the husband and wife went downhill health wise, so quickly - and all that was needed was to hire a weekly housekeeper to come in a few times a week and do all the heavy cleaning and grocery shopping - far less costly than placing both parents into a home they did not feel comfortable or happy in - I firmly believe in folks being with their loved ones or close to their loved ones and live as independently as possible. When I get to a point in my life where I need extra care I have advised both of my adult children to let me live in a tiny house with room to grow a garden and free to roam wherever I wish. This adult daughter did the right thing by having this tiny home built for her mother. God will reward her for being so loving to think of her mom's happiness, and not just her own self.

I have to admit I love tiny homes, but whenever I watch super young couples saying "we'll always stay in our tiny home!" and it's got narrow, steep steps up to a loft where you have to crawl in and out of bed...I find myself thinking "you say that NOW, but what are you going to do at 40 or 50 or 60 when your joints and your back don't appreciate the loft anymore?" So it was VERY nice to see a tiny home designed with aging in mind! I love that it's designed to be accessible and I thought it was very well thought out. Lovely!

TheShauNanigans I don’t think it’s disposable income at all - it’s from selling off their home. Now home ownership itself is a privilege but most ‘mature age’ people I know are asset rich (but often in a home that is not conducive to independent living), income poor. Which is why Tinys are so good - free up income (provided they can access land) but also cheap to run.

Agreed...most tiny homes have loft bedrooms. Imho this is a major flaw because one need not be elderly to be physically incapacited. At the age of 16 I broke my back. I was in hospital for a number of months but had I lived in a tiny home.. with a loft bedroom, I could not have gone home. I am not 'anti' Tiny homes but it must have a main floor bedroom space... otherwise when illness or old age strikes... you might not be able to go home... not a pleasant prospect.

This video made me cry all the way through. This lady is such a marvelous person. I loved her answer to your question about what her favorite part of the tiny house was and she couldn't name just one thing. She is so gratefull to her daughter for designing such a wonderful home and her daughter is just an amazing person to have thought so long and hard about every single one of her mother's needs and how to meet them. This is such a wholesome channel. I really hope you never stop doing this amazing, beautiful and stunningly hosted and edited videos. The sound quality of the speaking portions is so great as well, I always marvel at how clearly you can hear their voices and fully understand what they're all saying, even those ones who speak a little softer and a little more garbled. Cheers to an amazing channel.

Eastcoast Blogger Well, I can only speak for myself...but I just really want to own my home and financially, that would only be feasible for me, if I lived outside in the country. And I really don’t want to commute daily. I want a traveling bus remodel, ideally. Not a school bus, mind you, but a modern vehicle with decent speed and all that. That way, I can park close to work during the week (on private ground, of course, but I should be able to find a suitable corner, I can rent and then spent the weekend wherever I want. In the countryside, traveling...I could take my nephew with me on some adventure tours, when he is a little bit older... I‘ll never get around to traveling, if it involves trains and airplanes and hotels, honestly, it just exhausts me. And I‘ve lived in a two room apartment all my adult live, so it’s not, like I would be downsizing all that much.

The one thing that made this arrangement even more special was the mom's acceptance that her burdensome former home was no longer practical. Many people do not want to move from their long-time homes, even though the homes are no longer practical or safe. My own Mum is in her mid-80s, lives in a large city in an area that is no longer safe for vulnerable people, and won't budge. I have vowed not to do this to my own children and we've had some candid conversations about it. There comes a time in our life's journey where changes are necessary. This lady has compromised, and seems quite happy without a gargantuan house to maintain. Her willingness to rely on family while still enjoying her independence means she is safe and comfortable. I wish I could get her to talk to my Mum :-) Bless her and her family.

With all the bad surgeries, seniors wo real retirement income, and disabled ppl, this will be a great business well into the future. More isnt being done right now bc most ppl havent a clue (as you know) about what challenged ppl can and cannot do and what they need. not just Americans. I live in freaking Budapest/Hungary / poor as hell, in a 50sqm apartment 1+1 alone, it is huge for me, but this is one of the cheapest I can rent like now if I want to live alone in the city (older building, not a new one). Most of the apartments in Budapest have 20-30 sqm rooms and 2-3 of them + kitchen + bathroom. For what? Nobody knows because most of this doesn't have a parking spot assigned to them. Do you know who wants to live this big? A family here. Do you know what do they need? A parking spot. Yeay historical cities. The modern homes are better but they cost much more cos' they are mainly rented or sold to students/workers from richer countries mostly, sad. My grandma lives 2-3 times bigger apartment than me just because "this is what she stuck with" after the family moved out during the years. It is a huge burden to pay the upkeep of these too big spaces and I can not understand why humans do this with themselves.

Here is a trick for you who can create a win win situation. If there is an homeless shelter in your city, you can hire someone part time. In return you provide shower and foods, and some place to do their laundry, etc. Service for service = win win. Same thing could be with a student who need some extra little income. By the way, homeless doesn't mean danger or useless or heartless, you have to see.

@@mickyunit - Thanks! I can't take full credit. Where I live (Seattle, USA) many businesses are very disability-aware and accommodating. I'm not sure how much is mandated by state or city regulations, but I do see many "switchback" ramps that have a very gentle over-all grade and sturdy (e.g. metal sunk into poured concrete) railings. As I use a roller-walker (temporarily, I hope) I'm very appreciative of the ramps and I see many elders with canes using the ramps and railings to get up to a public building. Of course, they're also lovely for parents with strollers, or shoppers with rolling carts. One can make them quite attractive with non-skid tiles in a pretty pattern and metal railings with a motif or pattern, like leaves or vines.

If they ever needed to lower the ramp angle, it could be extended around the corner of the patio, to where the gas bottles are currently.

That is planning ahead. Good for you! I hope you succeed. So many of the Commenters say “I wish ...” and “The government needs to ...” or bash anybody who saves their money. Best wishes!

Wow she literally built a beautiful, functional tiny HOME for her mother SPECIFIC to all of her mother's needs and on a nice plot of land with Wildlife and nature as far as your eyes can see (and I didn't hear her say she studied architecture).🥺 I need to let that sink in for a minute.

They should sell the plans to this Beautiful Home. Many people could use a home like this; and, I would buy the first one.

I wish you a happy new year! Thank you for the tour. It's a beautiful house, but the owner is even more so - such a lovely lady! I hope she will enjoy living there for many, many years to come.

i dont care about the house. What i'm really inspired by is how much the daughter cares about her Mom. Unconditional love. Compassionate lady. This lady is paying back the kindness shown to her by her mom

That woman and her daughter are my favorites so far. They’re absolutely wonderful and so down to earth. It’s nice to see her being able to enjoy life. It seems like a great idea for my grandmother if she want so country and stubborn =) I love her stubbornness though
