That's definitely not all there is to it. The angle of Cosmic horror is the realization that we are an infinitesimal speck that doesn't matter in a cruel, uncaring universe. The bleakness and hopelessness of our existence in the face of powers that we cannot understand or even begin to comprehend. Gods that are so massive and powerful that we mean nothing to, and could end our entire existence with no thought or effort whatsoever. So, not just aliens mixed with octopi.

Then you clearly don't understand it at all. The point of cosmic horror is that the pictures we have will never match how they would really look. The immense scale, terror, and pure chaos these gods represent is what is to be feared. If you don't understand it now, I doubt you ever will. Just let other people enjoy it, don't be a party pooper.
