"The Endless" was classic Lovecraftian and a great but very much underappreciated film.

Good call, while it's a slower burn the payoffs are well worth it. If you weren't aware, it's also a quasi sequel to the also excellent Resolution by the same filmmakers with some clever intersections.
@AfroGaz71
@AfroGaz71 4 місяці тому
@@CosmicIceCream yeah, I seen Resolution, although not until after I'd seen The Endless. The intertwining story within that shared universe was well crafted . I really liked how you never actually see the entity but the movie still manages to portray it's influance and power it holds over time manipulation. It's very much in the vein of Lovecraftian cosmic horror. That scene with the Civil war guy in the tent caught in a 3 second loop was eerie af. Gave me the chills.

If you enjoyed "The Endless" and "Resolution", be sure to check out "Something in the Dirt" by the same creators - also low-budget and low-key, set in the same shared universe. "Synchronic" and "Spring" are also set in the same universe, and share some characters and plot elements like the "red weed"; "Synchronic" is maybe the most mainstream movie Benson and Moorhead created together so far, while "Spring" is maybe the slowest-moving and most niche, but all of these movies pay off in imagination and wonder for those with the patience for this sort of thing. You might also like "They Look Like People" - different creative team altogether, but very similar in theme, storytelling, and stripped-down production.. For something a little different, there's the much creepier and more intense "Caught" (2018), about a family of journalists held hostage in the rural UK by a very strange, inarticulate, and violent couple who demand something the family accidentally "caught" while filming a nearby military base. As above, the small and relatively unknown cast, low budget, minimalist (in this case generally practical) special effects, lack of hand-holding in the storyline, and sometimes slow pace aren't for everyone, but pays off well enough if this sort of thing works for you.

I love The Colour Out Of Space ( 2019)! However, there are other Lovecraftian horror movies long before that. There is Die Monster Die, The Dunwitch Horror, The Shuttered Room, and The Haunted Palace, which is based on Lovecraft's story, ' The Case Of Charles Dexter Ward', although the poems are by Edgar Allen Poe. " While like a gasly rapid river, though the pale door a hideous throng rushed out forever and laughed, but smiled no more!" - Poe

When exactly can a movie be labeled "Lovecraftian"? Are all those movies based on a story by HP Lovecraft? Or is it enough to embed some ingredients which are typically associated with Lovecraft?
@Metalkid1500
@Metalkid1500 3 місяці тому
Lovecraftian horror is just another name for cosmic horror. Cosmic horror is sci-fi horror that’s based on the theory of cosmicism: the theory that the universe is so massive and expansive that there are things within it mankind cannot comprehend and understand. Lovecraft Cthulhu mythos takes this theory and paints a what if situation. It’s horror based on the theory that there are plains of existence far beyond human comprehension. Lovecrafts brand of cosmic horror mixes mystery, occultist themes, sci-fi, and existential dread and creature horror and tops it with nihilistic themes. Essentially in cosmicism as well: humans are a tiny grain of sand on the cosmic beach. We are so insignificant that anything in a higher existence than us can wipe us out the same way we’d step on an ant and not know it.

I've seen every film on this list and you've done a great job of summarising them all. Have to say though, "As close to his works as you will get in the recent past" as a description for Underwater seems way off the mark, especially after covering the most The Colour Out Of Space, which is probably the most authentic adaptation on this list. I loved Underwater, but it doesn't feel particularly Lovecraftian, ad, from what I've read, Cthulhu was added as an an afterthought.

While I agree to an extent, it is referred to as "Lovecraftian horror" because he is usually considered the author that, if not created, best exemplified and left the biggest impact on the genre. And also because a lot of the works are either directly adapted from or heavily influenced by his work. I usually use the term "cosmic horror", but I can see why his name is synonymous with the genre considering he's probably both the most famous and important author in the genre.

Modernization always bothers me. Do people do it because they actually want to see it, because they think it will appeal to wider audiences, or simply because it's easier or cheaper to film? I love Lovecraft's rich historical backdrop, it was very important to him, he literally spent time hunting for places with the right historical vibes. I feel that filming modern locations, clothes and characters is detrimental to his stories.

It actually is. It had a lot of Lovecraftian inspiration. - Unknowable cosmic creatures. Allusion to ancient beings; - Said creatures turn you insane when you look at them; - In relation to above, if you have seen In The Mouth of Madness, Bird Box share a similarity - an apocalyptic scenario where humanity is being decimated through madness; - Some of the people that gazed upon the creatures were somehow "enlightened" (i.e. cult); - The drawings of what the creatures might look like in one of the scenes where actually too on the nose as being Lovecraftian; There are probably a few more as I am just going by memory. The inspirations might be on a superficial level but it's there.

@@Letsscalpp3d0s Birdbox better than A Quiet Place and EVEN Annihilation (loved by MANY Lovecraft fans)? I wouldn't argue that taste is very subjective but saying that everyone else has no taste while beeing in the clear minority is not helping you 😀

@@60iger29 annihilation had a terrible plot and was part of that white savior complex crap. Yea it makes a ton of sense to send in a team of nothing but women after numerous failed expeditions composed of Tier 1 operators with no contact at all plus they didn’t even send them in with any PPE either. A quiet place had monsters that could easily be killed by some 00 ought buck shot to the open maw yet somehow our military which has Bradley’s, Strykers and Apache gunships weren’t able to put them down. That’s just lazy and dumb writing from jim and his wife. At least Birdbox had a decent plot that made sense as to why just about everyone was killed off aside from the loonies and the blind.
