Pyrion, your take on kids having control in games, and then not having control immediately after putting it down is such a interesting take. It's an interesting parallel to addiction that I hadn't thought of before

I think it could also inform how parents approach games with their children as well. In my own experience growing up and seeing how my sister treats her kids, the more direct you are with your kids, the more they understand the rules you want them to follow, they better behaved they are. If you make it clear that games are a fun escape and that you aren't the boss outside of them, I don't think they'll be as bratty when they have to do chores afterward or whatever.

We do a lot of filing in my lab, for traceability reasons, we have paperwork that function as the primary record of all the results we produce. Also Sips, I am 31. And every business I have ever worked at keeps tons of filed paperwork for various records. Especially receiving paperwork, production schedules, any testing/calibration/spec certifications, and especially accounting.

Child studies do show that math apps and a lot of phone apps in general actually turn off the part of the brain for critical thinking skills and turn on the dopamine hits that games give, similar to the reflex trend in videogaming (as opposed to puzzle solving). Im an english education major so critical thinking is the name of the game and their is a whole heap of research papers that ive had the fortune of having to write about. Id suggest looking into it because their is really an unavoidable crisis of critical thought thats happening, humanity should be fine, but our (future kids) mentals will suffer for it Edit: lewis posits that books are less grasping then games and he is right - because reading books forces us to use critical thinking skills (i.e interpreting language, turning pages, imagining a picture based on interpreted language, thinking about themes, etc.) Whereas videogames often give you more components making critical thinking less necessary. Boardgames and story heavy games kind of form a middleground between these two

The doorbell…… Pyrion whats going on
@DarkerKitsune
@DarkerKitsune 2 роки тому
To answer Pyrion's take on memory. Memory is the path that an electical charge takes to light up a series of neurons, a neuron can be conected between one up to 10k deferent neurons, a particulary path of neurons represents a memory, sensetion or a movement on our bodies, thats why sometimes when we expirience something that can light up an almost exatcly path of a old memory can trigger that memory. As a bonus the reason why Practice makes perfection, each time we do something like doing a stroke of a pencil or a movement, the neurons make a path for the electric charge to go throgh, every time that happens that charge loses energy making it weak and so making the accion that we are performing not constant each time, but the more we performe that accion a membran called myelin sheath starts growing keeping the strength of the signal there fore making the accion more presice and controllable, the so called ''muscle memory''

Yeah, kids have so little control in their own lives. When they get any opportunity to have control, they hold onto it as much as they can. I sure can't blame them for that! Adults do similar things when they start to lose independence, too. I will say, though, it's easier to stop *anything* if you know when you have to stop, and you can prepare yourself for it. That's probably way more common for those of us with ADHD, but I get better overall results when I give, say, a 10 minute warning, then 5, then 2, and maybe even a countdown at the end. I'm not a parent, so YMMV, and it would be tough to do this for everything, but I find it handy when I *know* kids are going to complain. Yeah, kids get overwhelmed when they have too many options. That's why you're told to limit the number of toys they have, for example. They don't usually understand that they're *more* frustrated when they have more choice, and they haven't learned to deal with it yet. It can take a lot of self-awareness.
@TheJallerKnight235
@TheJallerKnight235 2 роки тому
It is definitely worse for people with ADHD. I forget the exact explanation chemically, but the gist of it is that ADHD brains place higher value on short-term rewards and lower value on long-term rewards, so that it becomes much harder to resist starting a fun thing, and once it's started it's much harder to stop. HealthyGamerGG has a video about why people with ADHD are more prone to addiction which I found really helpful in explaining and understanding my own behavior and symptoms.
@knitterknerd
@knitterknerd 2 роки тому
@@TheJallerKnight235 Pretty much all I know is that it has to do with the brain not getting enough dopamine. So I guess my brain is like, "Why the heck would I want to do (or stop doing) this if I'm not getting anything out of it?" Well, because you're my braIn, and *I* get something out of it. But apparently that isn't a very convincing argument.

1:00:00 we can freeze small amounts of tissue without much loss but larger stuff like a brain is difficult. Though the majority of damage is done when it´s being unfrozen so there is some small merit to people freezing themselves right now. As for memories no if the freezing and unfreezing process was done with little to no damage memories should be intact. They are based on the connections between neurons. Which do stay intact. I had a practical at a neurogenetics lab where they would grow Neurons from ipscs and have them actually be active. They did freeze samples and yes the neurons do still work though with some damage.

Interestingly Pyrion, our memories are almost always fragmentary. It’s why eye-witness testimony is generally unreliable, because our brains fill in details we don’t recall, just as long as it seems plausible enough for us to believe.

The thing about kids and technology, as I had a similar issue as a kid (what Pyrion is describing), I just hated the real world. I didn't realize it at the time, but I was experiencing anxiety and depression. And I found everything outside of computers pretty boring. It isn't an addiction, it's either a necessity or a call for help. Maybe it's worse now because in my days (2006 onward was my technology 'addiction'), we didn't have tablets widely available, or even internet. It wasn't until 2010 where it felt like technology was making a breakthrough and had a big influence in my life. Reminds me of the scene in the Simpsons when young Homer hugs a TV. Your friend becomes the one who understands you best, and for Homer, that is television. For me, computers. For your kids, it may be computers too. I'm lucky I can even remember that moment in my childhood.
@nate.draws.things
@nate.draws.things 2 роки тому
Hard agree. Many times things like being irritated when you have to get off the computer or something like that are symptoms of a larger problem.. The Internet and video games are a great escape from the stresses of everyday life and like you said if you don't want to deal with the real world it can def be associated with depression.

hey guys.. on gaming addiction and kids. I work as pedagogic school psychologist in Denmark. In general gaming is bad for kids, only when it fills out other good stuf, like time with friends and family. But games since 2018 has gotten real bad for kidds. Ever wondered whats the end game when games are designed around engagement, its designed to be addicting to kidds. Ever wonderes why minecraft suddenly needed to have flashy orbs fly out when you break blocks, and getting a bar go up. It makes the happy juice dopamine flow in the brain. And end station for that is that kidds get that fealing artificially easiere, so now other stuf, and toys arent as fun to play with, so yearh we are heading somewhere scary.

As a geneticist I can just inform everyone contrary to medias often random claims.. We are absolutely nowhere near to anything close to a solution to reversing or slowing aging.. To simply explain why.. its not that we could simply alter all DNA and you stop aging.. it would mean adjusting so many systems turning back on and off specific genes which have many redundancies to protect their function.. so until we understand every single one of those pathways independently.. there cannot be a solution other than... we teach cells not to age.. so we cause cancer. We don't even have any understanding of how red blood cells age or get marked for recycling yet.. Real research is not 1 lab... "trying to do....." it's the world working together on very specific and small details to gradually work towards the bigger picture. This is real science and it takes a lot of time.
@XMysticHerox
@XMysticHerox 2 роки тому
I imagine we will see some small progress this century but the big issue is that to actually stop aging nevermind reverse it you´d have to invent a bunch of physiological system from scratch. Something we are not even close to being able to do. Thats the issue. To actually fully stop aging we not only have to understand every pathway we have to be able to create entirely new ones and integrate them into the entire system. An absurdly complex task.
