День тому

Following Super Tuesday’s results, with the US presidential election still the better part of eight months away, a rematch between Joe Biden and Donald Trump is all but certain. Victor Davis Hanson, the Hoover Institution’s Martin and Illie Anderson Senior Fellow and author of the soon-to-be-released book The End of Everything: How Wars Descend into Annihilation, joins Hoover senior fellows John Cochrane and H.R. McMaster to discuss where Biden and Trump stand on “shrinkflation” and the US economy, America’s involvement in overseas conflicts, plus the likelihood of Democrats replacing a struggling Biden at their August national convention and Trump running a disciplined campaign despite his legal travails.
ABOUT THE SERIES
GoodFellows, a Hoover Institution broadcast, features senior fellows John Cochrane, Niall Ferguson, and H.R. McMaster discussing the social, economic, and geostrategic ramifications of this changed world. They can’t banter over lunch these days, but they continue their spirited conversation online about what comes next, as we look forward to an end to the crisis.

A fantastic dialogue. H.R. isn’t wrong about the global community hedging, and Hanson is right about Americans being sick of endless war and deflection from domestic issues. The American taxpayer is sick and tired of being squeezed both ways.

When I saw that Hanson and McMaster were on and that they were going to include Ukraine as an issue, I knew immediately that sparks were going to fly - and I wasn't disappointed! A Neocon Vs a Magacon! It was still cordial (after all, their paychecks are written by the same institution). Since their offices are next to each other at the Hoover Institution, I can only imagine how their conversations go (about Ukraine) in private!

First time visiting the Hoover Institution. Love Victor Davis Hanson....watch him on various on-line videos and podcasts. Have his book "The Dying Citizen." Gave copies to a couple of co-workers also. Going to get the next one. Looking forward to it.

Also, on the Ukraine, I do not believe Putin wants to be under China’s thumb. They are not two countries that have anything in common if left just to each other. If we pull Putin in our orbit he would be much more agreeable to negotiate. We also need to be PAID, in someway for our military support. We cannot do this for free anymore

Victor, please...Your statement that the Russian limited operation [which it was in the beginning] was an act of aggression [when the Minsk agreements to end the war in the Donbas were ignored] the invasion of Ukraine was really an act of survival and mercy for the Russian citizens of the Donbas. And then to hear how we have to keep arming Ukraine with more weapons to "win" when we are not capable of that mission or we would have already accomplished that.

"I never understood the logic of a country that has 30 million people vs 144million trying to do a Guderian or Patton breakthrough of that Maginot line of minefields..." The look on HR's and Cochrans face when Hanson said this is absolutely priceless. Finally someone on the show to challenge them on the mere *facts* of the reality of this war. Great respect for all of these gentlemen, but I have always found the optimism surrounding Ukraine's chances in this war baseless and counterproductive for Ukraine's cause. They wasted a lot of equipment and men on that Summer offensive that could be used for defense today.

McMasters needs to slow down on filling out TDY vouchers and spends some time in the US looking at the American decline in recruiting and capabilities - the fact is we have none. Moreover, the saki has gotten to him if he actually thinks Ukraine can be capable of fighting as a modern combined force within the next ten years, even with free equipment.

Alas, inflation is more than monetary stimulus. It is also wage / price spirals and if you dont think we are currently caught in an inflationary loop you probably argued inflation was transitory depsite year 3+ of core inflation being twice the target rate. Keep telling yourself it is solved by a target rate and real rates that are barely positive

Although I realize that many people may disagree, I believe that the error that NATO has made with Russia in regard to Ukraine, has been in not being anywhere near aggressive enough. I believe that deterrence is very important. I think that great efforts should be made to either stop bad things from happening or to stop them from getting worse. I think that a major motivator for Putin's actions in regard to Ukraine starting with the 2014 invasion and annexation of Crimea, has been his belief that the West is indecisive and scared and that he could get away with doing pretty much anything that he wanted to. I believe that the primary reason for the inadequate reaction of NATO has been fear of a nuclear conflict. Basically, I believe that through nonsensical bluffs and the West's own independent fear, Putin and his cronies have succeeded in cowing the NATO alliance into allowing Russia to seize Crimea in 2014 and begin a new invasion in 2022 that could result in Ukraine's eventual defeat. I believe that the chances of Russia's using nuclear weapons in Ukraine is miniscule at best. If Putin/Russia used nuclear weapons, I am sure they realize that they could easily be "signing their own death warrant" which I very much doubt they have much interest in doing. I strongly believe that corrupt government officials and oligarchs who spend billions of dollars of stolen money on colossal yachts and mansions have very little interest in committing suicide in attempts to keep stolen lands in Ukraine. People who are very interested in worldly goods of great luxury, are expressing a strong desire to go on living. When Russia seized Crimea in 2014, I believe that the U.S. and the rest of NATO should have told Putin in "no uncertain terms", that if Russian forces did not immediately leave Crimea, they would send their military into Crimea and destroy the Russian forces that were present there. If Russia had not complied with that demand, then NATO should have made that threat a reality. These actions almost surely would have prevented the 2022 Ukraine war from happening and could have saved hundreds of thousands of Ukranian lives. In 2022 when U.S. intelligence predicted that Russia was about to invade Ukraine, the U.S. and the rest of NATO should have warned Putin/Russia, that if they go ahead with their invasion, then the combined NATO forces would enter Ukraine and destroy the Russian military that was present. Again, I think that that this action could have very possibly stopped the Russian invasion before it happened. I still believe that the U.S. and the rest of NATO should take direct and aggressive action now in the war in Ukraine. I believe that the combined NATO forces should send into Ukraine a very large military force and destroy the Russian military that is present there. Russia is no longer a super-power and has not been one since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Russia has demonstrated in Ukraine for all to see, that it does not have a great military. The Russians are well aware that they cannot possibly successfully stand up to the U.S. alone or to the combined forces of NATO. The only real danger that Russia has is a large nuclear arsenal that I would strongly suggest that they dare not use. Confronting Russia on a Ukrainian battlefield would in fact not create "World War III". - This is a myth. The 32 countries that make up NATO versus Russian forces that are present in Ukraine, is not a World War. It is the total destruction of those Russian forces that have invaded Ukraine. NATO needs to "grow a backbone". China, North Korea and Iran are not sending armies to Ukraine to fight "shoulder to shoulder" with Russia. - This is not going to happen. This threat of World War III is little more than nonsense that Russian would dearly love for the West to believe. Russia should be forced to give back to Ukraine, every inch of land that they have illegally seized including Crimea. After all Ukrainian lands have been returned, Russia should be compelled to pay backbreaking reparations to rebuild all of Ukraine that they have destroyed. A stern message needs to be sent to all aggressor nations that all they will receive for their actions is military defeat, isolation and economic collapse.

I'm hearing so many military and ex military pundits totally in disagreement with McMaster across the board starting with who rejected the Mintz accord. Why is it so difficult to get basic facts as to what the present situation is. That Nuland just resigned to me suggests that the McMaster- administration position has less and less support. I think I dead and listen to a lot more news and information than mist average Americans on this subject and find this conflicting info so frustrating. For my money I think Victor is raising important issues. And I don't necessarily agree that Ukraine is the avenue for projecting US deterrence power.
